UK Chart: Dead Island: Riptide first, but sells less than half the original

DC brawler Injustice knocked to second place, while Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen debuts in third.

Dead Island: Riptide has shuffled its way to first place in the UK charts, yet failed to sell even half as many copies in its opening weekend as its predecessor did in 2010.

Three percent of the game's total sales also came from the controversial Zombie Bait Edition of the game, which features a resin statue of a bloodied female torso.

Last week's king of the charts, DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, is beaten to second place.

Capcom's Dragon's Dogma relaunch, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, lands in third place. Meanwhile, Namco Bandai's licensed Strek Trek tie-in warps into fourth.

Tomb Raider slips another spot to fifth, while BioShock Infinite drops four spots to sixth.

The fourth new entry in the top 10 this week is 3DS exclusive LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, which debuts in eighth. It's behind FIFA 13, which is seventh.

Defiance is ninth, and Luigi's Mansion 2 rounds out the top 10.

The Top 20 UK chart for the week ending April 27:

1. Dead Island: Riptide
2. Injustice: Gods Among Us
3. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
4. Star Trek
5. Tomb Raider
6. BioShock Infinite
7. FIFA 13
8. LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins
9. Defiance
10. Luigi's Mansion 2
11. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

14. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
15. Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed

Great game to play on-line with a few friends, especially with a few beers, yea the story sucks, but island full Zombies just waiting to be cut up and mangled, what more could one need. Have to admit the old road racing abit limited this time round. Riptide doesn't need a story, just a simple island full of ever spawning zombies, and interactive environment.

The fact that it's selling as well as it is with how crappy things are around the world and how little disposable income there is: is great.  Just kinda shows that there were quite a few people (like me) that loved Dead Island and were simply wanting more of the same.  I'm glad in a way: it seems a lot of companies change everything in sequels/expansions/whatever and lose what made it popular in the first place.  Riptide's place at #1 on this list shows that, while there might be a dozen people posting to this site that hated the first game, there are still hundreds of thousands out there that loved it...... it WAS the first game to get FPS melee combat RIGHT..... not that whole "Swing, back up, swing, back up" like every FPS-style melee combat since the beginning of time.

Wow, talk about a snowballing effect!  The first game was pretty well liked and Riptide is essentially: more Dead Island.  That is pretty much what it was billed as.... a bunch more Dead Island content.  People that liked the first will like Riptide; people that didn't like Dead Island won't like Riptide.  It's that simple.  People that rated Riptide lower than Dead Island are crazy: IT'S AN EXPANSION!  *sigh*

i honestly would buy riptide because its soo fun to hit zombies like undead nightmare, dead rising etc... bugs, glitches, repetitive is not my problem its fine for me.

i dont hate DC or any fighting games, tekken, soul calibur, mk, street fighter i love those but injustice doesnt feel right for me, i dont know.. its a feeling but maybe its the roster... not enough roster. Though.. i am still waiting for DC Ultimate Alliance just like Marvels Ultimate Alliance but DC :)

After the scam of a game that was Dead Island this was totally expected no surprise..

not surprising. Dead island was terrible. a game that sold mostly on the hype generated by a trailer

I cannot believe that this beat the DC game into first place. The PC version of this series' first game is one of the worst game purchases I have ever made. I bought a retail copy at game stop only to find out that the CD key had been used and it took me nearly ten days to straighten that out through STEAM. I then installed the game only to discover a bug filled abomination of a game; especially an audio bug that made it unplayable. I would never go near the second installment of this game even if it were given to me for free.

I'm disappointed with the reviews for Riptide. I mean, yeah the story isn't great, but that's why they added a skip button for the cutscenes. The Dead Island games have always been about mindless zombie killing with heavy, blunt and sharp weapons.  I guess reviewers don't factor in fun in their reviews, cause this game is a blast

yea publishing rotten unfair reviews will do that.

I'm having a lot of fun with the new Dead Island. Although, it's definitely not for everyone.

I love Riptide, but then again I loved Dead Island, but I also loved Too Human which also got crapped on by gamespot so maybe I just like shitty games.

I'm enjoying Dead Island Riptide myself.  Not a perfect game by any means but the fun factor is there.

FIFA 13 still in the top 10? Hasn't every FIFA fan out there bought it months ago? And Aliens: Colonial Marines still in top 20? Good lord.

Until they start including digital sales, this list does not mean much.

TBH alot of people in the UK do have bad tastes, espeically when buying games like ACM

the best game on that top 5 list is Dark arisen dragons dogma, which hasnt been given much advertisment. Im from the UK, and i tell you this. Marketing is king here.  Star trek  awful game, dont know how that made it. , At least some people had the sense to buy dark arisen, which is thee most underated game of this gen. due to it being released last year, when people were still playing skyrim and mass effect, it didnt get the attention or the credit.

Being released this year again, and comming top 3 is impressive. Well done to capcom, for once for creating a damn great game.

This should have been released as an expanison pack at a lower price.

We dont need another clone game sold at full price. CoD, AC, fifa are enough, arent they?

Between Riptide and Survival Instinct, it's tempting to assume one can package dog turds in anything that so much as hints at zombies in the title.  Shameful.

My copy of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen just arrived today. :)

It saddens me that my fellow countrymen got duped into buying that broken Star Trek game, and are still buying that awful Aliens game.  Riptide sounds like it should have been DLC, not a full-priced sequel.  Gah.

At least there are some decent games in that list as well.

I am still playing first Dead Island. Very good game if 2nd one is similar I do not mind getting it for 4 pounds in 6 months from STEAM.

@Gomtor I'm loving it as well. It's very similar to the original, which is what i was hoping for. The combat has always been satisfying for me, and i was never into the story of Dead Island, but we all know those games were never meant to be played for the story, just the mass zombie slaying.  Nothing better than chopping off a zombies head with an electric charged fire axe

I doubt digital sales amount to much.  Specially on the PS Store in europe where games are usually overpriced compared to retail.

@desmondx1

Agreed. If they had released it as an expansion/add on it probably would have sold better and at a lower price people quite possibly might have bought it. Hell they could have released it along side the game of the year edtion for  the original Dead Island for about the same price they 're charging for it.

Fryboy101
Fryboy101

@bannermanner the difference between riptide and survival instinct is that riptide is actually fun.  Have you played riptide, or do you just base your opinion on reviews?

Pyrosa
Pyrosa

@DeKuip Not really...  It's just a massive expansion pack using exactly the same engine (DI v.1.30), same gameplay, and imported characters with all their levels & skills.   So just like all expansion packs, less than half the people who bought the game will buy the expansion.

Or the flip-side: Half of the people who bought the original still want to level-grind their level 40-50 characters up to level 70 using the expansion pack.

No exciting/dramatic news to be found there; sorry.

@Gallowhand I ordered it too. I hope I will get it today. I got it from ASDA for 13 pounds. Sweet price. If you got it for PS3 maybe you will come across my pawn If I do get the game today.

@Karmazyn I'm not usually a fan of zombie games, but I had a lot of fun playing Dead Island in co-op, especially in the first two Acts.  However, it did get repetitive and tedious after a while.  Haven't bothered getting Riptide.

Karmazyn
Karmazyn

@Hardcoresmiley Is it really so bad? Did you buy it or do you base your recommendation on Gamespot review. IGN gave this 7.2 which is no perfect but worth consideration in half a year.

Hardcoresmiley
Hardcoresmiley

@Karmazyn @Hardcoresmiley I didnt buy it but i've been playing it and its just the same game packaged as something else, your better off just playing the original again, but then again if you really like dead island then carry on but imo its awful.
