UK Chart: BioShock Infinite stays top as Defiance enters third

Tomb Raider clings on to second place in the UK charts.

by

Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite has remained top of the UK charts for its second week of release, despite a 75 percent drop in overall sales, while Trion's massively multiplayer online shooter Defiance has landed in third position.

Defiance is a new IP designed to tie in to the SyFy TV series of the same name, which premieres in the UK on April 16. The game sold the vast majority of its copies on the Xbox 360, with 76 percent of sales attributed to Microsoft's platform.

Square Enix's Tomb Raider clings to second place for the third week running, with EA's FIFA 13 also remaining in fourth.

3DS-exclusive Luigi's Mansion 2 remains fifth for its second week, while Epic Games' Gears of War: Judgment drops three places to sixth.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is seventh, Assassin's Creed III is eighth, Skylanders Giants is ninth, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted is 10th.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3DS and Wii U is nowhere to be seen in the full top 40, although Nintendo has said it is having issues providing copies of the game to retailers.

The Top 20 UK chart for the week ending April 6:

the fact that tomb raider is on the list says a lot about the game :)

I have my personal rating and I only play "GREAT" 3rd person games so TR is topping off my chart ! although Bioshock would be close if it was 3rd person ?  (to each his own) !

Glad TR is still holding on. Its such a good game and I want them to continue in this direction. This was their 1st attempt in this style and I think with a few more iterations, it will be phenomenal.

Come on, Tomb Raider! You can do it!

(Though BioShock: Infinite is also one hell of a game)

75 % drop in sales after the first week. Damn, that's a lot of lost momentum. No wonder companies only care about the first few months of sales. Although, it still retained the no. 1 spot, so either the competition is weak or that remaining 25 % makes up quite a few copies.

shouldve put monster hunter on all 3 consoles, why do they think they're going to sell successfully when the console itself wasnt sold successfully

I always have to be wary of any Bioshock Infinite articles since a lot of douches like to post spoilers.

Bioshock: Infinite

a truly great game, held back from being a masterpiece by failing at it's gameplay. Or to put it better, having terrible gameworld interactions, and a lackluster shooter experience.

Bioshock Infinite  is great but the combat is lacking, these 10/10 reviews are bollocks and gloss over any negatives about the game.

Bought the season pass though as I really enjoyed it.

Hope Bioshock continues at #1. It's definitely one of those games that make every other game in existence seem lesser.

I actually played the Defiance beta and saw the upswing potential of the game.  It was an IP I've been waiting a long time for and just couldn't wait for a review rating to swing me in either direction.  BTW, where the heck are the reviews for this game?!  Doesn't matter,  I bought the game and am having a heck of a fun time with it.  It has it's problems (not a ranked 10 game) but is still a great game to play.  I'm glad to see it in the top three.

Another thing on my bucket list is to see this type of IP (1st or 3rd person, doesn't matter) as a cross-console MMO - PlayStation and XBOX.  It'll happen one day. I just have to be patient.

Played the beta of Defiance. I am not impressed. Its great to see Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider still topping the charts. They both deserve a nominee for game of the year so far this year.

BioShock Infinite deserves to stay at the top.

This game, to me, was sheer brilliant. I'd give this game a perfect ten.

@Hurvl I think that's probably because it's so highly anticipated, everybody who wanted it bought it day-1,

@faizankhan23 Yeah, I almost started my second playthrough immediately after being taken back to the main menu. Only reason I didn't was cause I absolutely HAD to get to bed...

@plm3d_basic Get out! Save yourself! Stay away from all comments until you've finished the game!! ALL comments, sometimes people post OT stuff and ruin something that wasn't supposed to even be discussed (Happened to me).

So yeah, go, finish B:I, then come back.

@plm3d_basic What are you doing in a comments section? Get out of here and go finish the game!

Also Snape kills Dumbledore.

@shingui5 In my opinion the game setting suffered just for being a shooter, but what to do? We're in 2013, your game has to either be a shooter or a sports game if you want it at the top of the charts.

@wgerardi ''Every other game in existence'' Are you suggesting it is the greatest game of all time?

GasparNolasco

@XCyberForceX MMO reviews take a while because they have to test the servers and community quality, etc. For that they need people playing the game.

@Thrazewolf Yeah a perfect ten not for the gameplay ...for the brilliant story and how it was introduced to you....a Beauty!!!

@natalieyan Bioshock Infinite is waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. That's what I call a video game, and it's much more.

@Daemoroth I know that preorders and day-1 buyers make up a huge deal of the total sales, but it's not often I see precise numbers about it and 75 % is a very large number.

I also follow movie charts at boxofficemojo but they hardly ever speak of a movie losing 75 % after one week, although you can't preorder a visit at the cinema, you have to actually go there and not everyone can get to see it the first night.

@GasparNolasco @shingui5 I don't get that, Bioshock 1 & 2 were technically ''shooters'' I havn't played 2 yet, but in infinite i felt aloot of the time i was just filling up time so that the campaign wouldn't be crazy short, I mean killing 1 boss 3 times within 1-2 hours? Every time i entered an area i knew, oh no prob gonna shoot some people for the next 10-15 min, and was bored by it. They rly screwed up in certain aspects, the story is fine, but the vigors don't make sense at all (I know how they come to exist, they just don't make sense in Columbia) In Bioshock 1 i didn't have this feeling, I always felt i was progressing whereas I hardly had it in Infinite. not to mention the (in my opinion) great story behind the plasmids

Doesn't take away it tells one of the better stories I've played since a long time. Just wish they would do less generic shooting action and more story telling instead of saving 90% of the story for the last 15 min.

wgerardi
wgerardi

@csvichf @wgerardi hahaha, it's possible, but I meant that more in terms of sheer quality. After playing Uncharted 2 a few years ago I felt a similar way, where everything else just seemed kind of lazy and less thought out.

XCyberForceX
XCyberForceX

@GasparNolasco @XCyberForceX That may be true but then how could they have a review so quickly for Sim City 2013? Within a day.  Is there money involved for a quick review or are they just dis-interested?

Kairysama

@woodyfr @natalieyan Both ofem are amazing games. and game of the year is probably ganna be an indie game or something.

GasparNolasco
GasparNolasco

@csvichf Agreed, great story but it felt like the gameplay was kind of an afterthought.

As I said, in a perfect world they would have the liberty to make this a point and click adventure or something, but we're in the 'shooter world', it seems. You can only progress in games by killing hundreds of dudes.

csvichf
csvichf

@wgerardi @csvichf Ah yes, i see what you're meaning. I usually have that with games with good stories, had it this gen with MGS4, Deus Ex: HR, Bioshock 1, just absolute gems with pretty much great anything, instead of choosing gameplay over story or vice versa. Bioshock infinite i just didn't rly enjoy the gameplay, still great game though

GasparNolasco
GasparNolasco

@XCyberForceX I wouldn't say "money" -- but in the case of Sim City it was kind of a bait and switch.

They opened special "reviewer servers" before the game was launched (about a week or so before, I believe) and gullible sites went and reviewed the game early, since they didn't know the online experience would be so flawed and the game was so hyped up.

If you checked, at the time SC's metacritic was over 90 before the launch and went down to 66 after.

@moataz1993 i hope only game like these get bought i love bioshock, half life, deus ex,metal gear solid, dishonored, thief, elder scroll series, etc cause these game maybe are the only game you can enjoy on the singleplayer it self and thats rare for game nowadays

Kairysama
Kairysama

@moataz1993@Kairysama true, but honestly when it comes to games like Bioshock, half life, metal gear solid etc, that you know ppl behind it are passionate and still care about the fans, you don't care about the review score. Buy install play the shit of them ^^
