UFC Trainer hits Kinect, Move, Wii on January 1

E3 2010: THQ reveals new mixed martial arts tutorial title for multiplatform motion-sensing systems.

by

LOS ANGELES--THQ kicked off the Electronic Entertainment Expo with the news that UFC Undisputed 2010 hadn't been selling as well as expected. The publisher isn't letting that undermine its plans for the mixed martial arts franchise, as today it announced a new UFC title in an E3 analysts meeting.

UFC Trainer will teach players the finer points of punching a dude in the face. (Screen from UFC Undisputed 2010.)

Set for release January 1, 2011, UFC Trainer will be a more combative take on the fitness genre than the likes of Wii Fit or EA Sports Active. The game will be released for the Xbox 360 Kinect, the PlayStation 3 Move, and the Wii. THQ's executive vice president of core gaming, Danny Bilson, apologized to analysts for the game's absence from THQ's E3 presence, but said the publisher doesn't want to show it off until it's the best training game on the market.

"We want this thing tuned to perfection without lag," Bilson said. "And I'm not going to ship it until it's the coolest fighting thing in the world."

This is the second straight year THQ has chosen to announce a New Year's Day release while at E3. Last year, the publisher committed to launching its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 action adventure game Darksiders on January 1. However, the publisher couldn't quite keep to that schedule, and the game slipped to January 5.

@Torque 203 The ridiculous part is that a gym session with a professional would be cheaper in most cases too!

Cross-platform motion control? I didn't expect that to show up anytime soon, especially with Kinect.

@Torque203 Good bit of sarcasm there. It's silly to think a motion game could replace real training, but look how much more ridiculous this would sound if your comment was about conventional game controllers: "so now I can learn mixed martial arts using dual sticks instead of going to an actual gym." Isn't this what people should have said for the first UFC game?

@ RE3_UBCS You totally missed the point son. With Move and Kinect, the player provides the movement. If you had ever fought in your life you'd know that you don't have to know any "moves" to hit someone in the face. When you punch, it helps if you know how to do it properly, but whatever the case you either hit or miss. Now, the big issue with this new control technology is lag, and they clearly stated that's what they are working on. Motion control does not = fail. Wimpy kids drooling over old school fighting games where all you do is whack off buttons = fail.

I don't think it'll be entirely accurate simulation. To pull off those MMA moves you have to be in some kind of a shape, and this thing is aimed at gamers..if they want to sell a million or so copies, they can't make it hard to replicate the moves. Besides, motion control = fail. Only fighting games I'm looking forward to are MvC3 and freakin' Mortal Kombat.

so i can now train mix martial arts while playing video games instead of going to an actual gym and learn it

We'll see how advance they can make it on the Kinect.

this seems pretty cool though how are they going to do this with the Wii... I mean you can do some software work arounds with the PS3's 2D camera and two Moves, but the Wii will have some issues unless they support Ubisoft's camera or have their own

Well at least you will be able to kick in the Kinect version or the game will be able to tell if you are kicking properly. I have a feeling most motion control games will be ported across the 3 systems but the Kinect version will almost always be the most advanced version like EA Sports Active 2.0

Yeah, I have to agree with the general sentiment that motion control still sucks as of yet, but as drokmore said, every technology is pretty lame at first, but if devs keep plugging away it it some really awesome stuff could eventually become a reality. That said, I have no intention of buying into any of these motion controllers this generation, as they just don't work well enough yet, and devs cannot take full advantage of them until the tech has evovled.

Ya i think thats key. This technology now is so/so and a bit gimicky, but you have to start somewhere and begin to build a framework for possibility.

Not going to get it. But its interesting to see what kind of stuff they are coming up with. Imagine combining next gen motion tech with next gen 3d displays and WOW its going to be crazy in the next gen systems.

Being a Jiu Jitsu practioner, I question how the grappling would be simulated. Its kindve hard to simulate most moves without a live training partner.

it be funny to walk in sneak record your brother playing this game. you could use it against them and if they dont do what you want you could tell him ok.. i`ll just show mom and dad this video of you rolling on the floor fighting yourself and they will lock you up in the loony bin FOREVER!

Lmfao I know Im not buying this. The Wii's Motion controls suck so hard,I have to do the same thing 5 times in order to get it to work, Thats a joke. PS3's Move is just a rip off of the Wii and will probably handle similar. Kincet (way better name then Project Natal) seems promising but until a review comes out then I will wait to buy but chances are it will be the same problems as the Wii/PS3 Rip Off.
