Ubisoft's Heroes thwarted

Heroes don't always triumph in the end.

MTV Multiplayer is reporting today that Ubisoft's game based on the NBC TV show Heroes has been canceled. A representative with the publisher confirmed that news for GameSpot, simply stating that "Ubisoft is no longer making a Heroes game."

The project was originally announced by Ubisoft in July of 2007, and has rarely been acknowledged since. Since that time, the show has been on the decline. Now in its third season, Heroes has been struggling in the ratings, prompting NBC to fire co-executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander last weekend. In their absence, series creator Tim Kring plans to simplify the show, placing the emphasis on character development instead of plot twists.

This is not the first disappointment that Ubisoft has experienced with TV tie-ins. Lost: Via Domus was released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC earlier this year, but as of September had only sold roughly 103,000 copies at US retailers, according to the NPD Group. Last year's CSI: Hard Evidence performed better for the publisher, selling 238,000 copies across the Xbox 360, Wii, and PC.
