Ubisoft's Heroes thwarted

Publisher confirms death of game based on TV's superpowered serial saga; rights reportedly revert back to NBC Universal.

Heroes don't always triumph in the end.

MTV Multiplayer is reporting today that Ubisoft's game based on the NBC TV show Heroes has been canceled. A representative with the publisher confirmed that news for GameSpot, simply stating that "Ubisoft is no longer making a Heroes game."

The project was originally announced by Ubisoft in July of 2007, and has rarely been acknowledged since. Since that time, the show has been on the decline. Now in its third season, Heroes has been struggling in the ratings, prompting NBC to fire co-executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander last weekend. In their absence, series creator Tim Kring plans to simplify the show, placing the emphasis on character development instead of plot twists.

This is not the first disappointment that Ubisoft has experienced with TV tie-ins. Lost: Via Domus was released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC earlier this year, but as of September had only sold roughly 103,000 copies at US retailers, according to the NPD Group. Last year's CSI: Hard Evidence performed better for the publisher, selling 238,000 copies across the Xbox 360, Wii, and PC.

If this game actually was made, it probably would have had the same outcome as Lost: Via Domus. It would have been fun for the fans of the show (while it lasted) by keeping them interested with not just game play, but a solid story to tie in with the series.

was thinking oblivion with powers intstead of magicka. oh well they wouldnt have made it anywhere near that good anyway. more like superman 64 on peter's part

Ah nuts. :( I was really looking forward to this. Would've been interesting to see how the game played. I imagined it might be something similar to Crackdown, but with more powers than just jumping high and making shockwaves on the ground :P

im a massive fan of heros watched it since the 1dt episode i have a ps3 and dont think it would have been that great on the ps3 i think the best console for it to be on the wii cause you have to move ur arms so if u were some1 like sylar it would be fun but as a ps3 it would be hopeless

These sorts of cheap cash-in titles are going to become much more of a gamble in the near future. People just cant afford to waste cash of 2nd rate products whose only selling point is they are a rip-off of a show. Thankfully this one is dead. The real question becomes: How many more will we see Axed in the next 3-9 months?

Yea there is no way they could have made a game out of Heros much less a good game at that.

I saw a trailer for Heroes on the Wii at youtube it looked good but, it was also No More Heroes on Wii not Heroes.:P Some got the name wrong. Seriously after this article I watched some video's on youtube of the serious it really is an attampt to make a drama simular to X-men without the comic style fights. Its bad. But X-men fans that want a simular series with more drama should maybe try a manga and, anime called Tsukihime.

Best cancellation news ever. I shudder to think of how bad that game would have turned out.

kimarous Posted Nov 7, 2008 9:07 am PT For a second there, I thought by "Heroes" they meant "Heroes of Might and Magic", thus mistakeningly thinking that they were abandoning the entire "Might and Magic" franchise...-----God I hope not as its one of the best series in gaming history... imo

Sensible move on their part. I suppose that the results of their market research showed that there was not enough interest in the proposed game and producing it would have been a waste of time and money.

Thank the gods. The game would have been awful. The shows going down hill, really fast. The show didn't 'jump the shark' after the first season, it crashed in the pool and all its writers must have been eaten.

I wasn't that excited about the Heroes game anyway, but I'm very worried that the show may come to an end this season (just my projection, sigh). They overused the plot twists way too much this season (and some parts of the previous seasons too). I just wanna see more on the development of the characters and villains!

I think that the only game that could possibly be good with this property would be an mmo, where you would be randomly assigned a power at character creation, then gradually increase that power as you play the game. That won't happen though, because with how the show's been going, it may get canceled before they could finish production of the game.

The first season was awesome. It starts out really confusing, and then just shot off. The secodn season was just gay (What the Elle?? And what's up with the new Candace?) I don't think they could possibly make this into a game and keep the characters from the show. It would just be retarded.

I haven't seen the show, but I've heard a lot of buzz. I've got the first season in my Blockbuster Online queue and should get the first disc soon. How can this not turn into a good video game, though? It's a story about people with super powers! Of course, since I don't know anything about the story I don't know how the gameplay could even work. It seems that the only games that have worked for super-heros have been the X-men Legends and Marval Alliance games.

not surprised Hereos was something different but now I can't even follow it

I partially agree with Cheesychips; the show was "rubbish" but ONLY at the start, it just kept getting better and better; admittedly the storyline they went with after changing the end of season 2 (the original one had the virus being released) isn't that great, but its still good.

Oh, well. I stopped watching the third season because I missed an episode and probably wouldn't have any idea whats going on now. The show is getting crazy and convoluted...Nikki has a twin sister!? That was kinda lame and was just thrown in for you know what reason. If the videogame let me control Claire I probably would have bought it even if it was really bad.

Can't say I didn't see this coming because I did, it would have been a bad game anyway; they really need to stop making games based on popular TV shows, they can never be accurately emulated on consoles. Surprised they haven't made a video game based on smallville, uh oh I take that back, but it's probably too late.

I Like Season three. First few episodes feel a bit rushed but I believe that is to get the plot in line with where it should but isn't due to the writers strike

LoL @ Heroes and Ubisoft. Ubisoft "should" have more sense then to try and make tv based games in the first place. Apparently dollar signs replace actual brain cells. You've put out wonderful games before, stop looking for gold in crap! Heroes was awesome in the first season, and I even enjoyed the second season. Third... well I'm having trouble wanting to watch it. Too much running in circles story (wait, there's a story?!?!) to make much sense.

Lost Via Domus was on of the worst games ever. I'm glad that it didn't sell well- Ubisoft will think twice before doing another such crap.

Specialists have determined the main reason for Heroes not making it as a game to be the characters not wearing their underwear on the outside.

Ardiendo_1

This game would have obviously been terrible. If the ratings of the TV show are the reason behind it's cancellation it means Ubisoft were relying soley on the shows marketability (and not the game's content) to sell it. If they'd made a good game it would have still sold well even if the show was on a downwards spiral. Now I am concerned for the TV show because I do actually like that. It always surprises me how easily people give up on TV shows like this. If I start watching something 99% of the time I see it through to the end. I hope they turn things around because there is already a shortage of good shows on TV.
