Ubisoft: Xbox One, PS4 preorders two times past gen

Yves Guillemot says some retailers reporting double the number of preorders compared to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

During a post-earnings call today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said some retailers are reporting Xbox One and PlayStation 4 preorder figures being double those of their predecessors.

"Some retailers are saying--not all of them--but some retailers are saying that their preorders are two times what they sold at the last generation launch," Guillemot said. "At the moment they are really getting more preorders than what they saw before."

The Xbox One and PS4 are both currently sold out at GameStop, while day-one editions of the consoles are also unavailable on Amazon. Strong consumer demand for the Xbox One and PS4 during E3 last month helped the retailer post its biggest preorder week of all time for games.

Both consoles launch later this year.

It truly saddens me as a gamer to see people challenging the quality of this generation of games and to even class it as the worst generation is ridiculously naive and ignorant.

Not only were we blessed with games such as Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Uncharted, Call Of Duty (despite the hate on the series, CoD 4 changed how first person shooters can be played), Battlefield series, Demon/Dark Souls, Metal Gear Solid IV, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim, Bioshock, Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption etc etc, but it was also the true generation of online console gaming.

Gamers are so fickle these days.

As far as the argument that one is cheaper then the other goes I must say... That was never a concern for me. I already pre-ordered a PS4, PS4 Eye, Extra Controller, Destiny, Battlefield 4, Killzone 4, Infamous Second Son, and Watch Dogs. So for me I have already spent about 820 dollars plus tax total. I am not saying this to brag, but to point out the fact that 100 dollars more for a XBOX 1 was not the reason I bought a PS4. If I truly thought Microsofts console would of fit my needs better then the PS4 I would have had no problem with Microsofts 500 dollar price tag. Infact, I would have easily paid 600 - 800 if the hardware inside these new consoles was even more powerful then they currently are.

Facts are facts! The fact is Microsoft spent research and developement money on building not just a gaming console, but a full entertainment center running a custom version of Windows 8 pro. The problem with this is if I want to do anything other then game I will use my PC. So for me the full entertainment center thing is useless. Sony on the other hand spent all research and developement money on nothing but gaming. Since all I do is game on a console PS4 wins it for me.

PS4 ram is way faster then XBOX1 for gaming. However, XBOX 1 ram is slower for gaming, but better for a operating system where you can multitask and do many other things then game. If you plan on doing other things then just gaming get a XBOX 1. If you want to do nothing but game like me and want them to run better get a PS4.

I know PC hardware pretty well and I can say for definite PS4 GDDR5 ram has more through put and bandwidth which is needed for games. Not to mention the fact that the PS4 video card is 1.84 teraflops and XBOX1 is only like 1.3 something teraflops. If I was building a new computer for just gaming I would buy the GDDR5 and get the videocard with higher teraflops because it will get a higher score in games and benchmarks like 3Dmark, etc.

The extra ports on he XBOX 1 like the IR and HDMI input are something I would never use either.

With this all said keep in mind both next gen consoles are a lot better then the previous ones. Also I would have to say some people might actually use the extra features of Microsofts gaming/entertainment center, but I would not. I also prefer more horsepower under the hood just for games.

i've never been a first adopter before. I've never had the money on time, so i've always ended up getting one much later.

But, as the stars seem to align, i have the means to get one on launch. And even though I've heard of some people's bad experience, i'd like the opportunity to be on the vanguard for this gen.

So in other words; pre-ordered my PS4, and i can't wait till autumn!

The following could be an advertisement..."Coming to eBay this fall.  Presenting the new PS4 for just $2500!"

The quote reads "... retailers are saying that their preorders are two times what they sold at the last generation launch"  - NOWHERE does it way that BOTH consoles are doubling pre-orders, only that pre-orders for nextgen consoles are doubled.  Very different.  One could be selling much greater than the other (and probably is).

I'm genuinely surprised by this considering that the economy is sill relatively in the crapper and there really isn't a huge leap forward tech wise with the next gen.

I won't be buying either console for a while, at least until after the first price drop (and the xbox drops Kinect)

Not surprised! Both systems have been highly anticipated! Interesting to see how many XB1's are preordered given the higher price. But still to early! Devoted fans have been waiting for both systems and have jumped in! For me, I will wait and see! Still too many unknowns.

Are people really suprised by this? When Xbox 360 was released, you couldn`t even connect it to a Wifi without having to by a expensive Wifi adapter that you had to connect to to your console.

Obviously we preorder more from the Internet today than we did back than. It just means less people will buy it from the store.

It helps that when preordering on Amazon, you don't have to actually pay anything until the item ships.  Screw Gamestop and their $100 down.

Due to the late arrival of the next gen and $400 price point. Nevertheless, the truly hot console games are 1-2 years off.

@ElJefeDeMedios Typical Sonybot "out of touch with reality" response. Make something up if it doesn't align with what I think the truth is. I will continue to perpetuate a lie because I don't like the truth.

@ElJefeDeMedios Oh come on, you can bet your ass that if one was selling far greater than the other that company would be on that like flies on shit. Fact of that matter probably is that the pre-orders are very close.

@tionmedon PC's are great if you have the knowledge; money and will to keep a high end PC up and working, but consoles are more convenient. Just saying, I love playing PC games as well as console games, but I'm tired of these dumb biased and arrogant attitudes I see from fanboys. There are pluses and minuses to both PC and consoles.

@NTM23@tionmedon I totally agree with you. While about 90% of my gaming is probably done on console (I own both the 360 & PS3), I'm still interested in games for my PC and I'm planing on upgrading my PC so that I can actually run CoH 2 and the upcoming Total War: Rome 2 :)

Anyways, while I've more or less stopped caring about fanboys, I completely agree with what you're saying about bias and arrogant attitudes coming from em', but there's probably nothing to do about it...

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@Landsharkk @de-astroturfer Yes of course other companies do it but in this instance not Sony. All the evidence points to Sony allotting plenty of units to retailers an example being that M$ allotted only 16 units  to a branch of gamestop where as Sony allotted 60 units to the same store, with other retailers reporting similar numbers.

At the end of the day its a cheap PR tactic only used when focus groups and consumer surveys suggest the buzz for your product is very low, none of the best selling products use this tactic because it just wastes the buzz surrounding your product and can cost sales not increase them.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@ajay1708 @de-astroturfer Most monopolistic corporations are, we're all being conned patronised and fleeced left right and centre. In this instance M$ is trying to persuade us everyone wants an xbox one so, so should you and with their fake petition that we want their locked in DRM prison too, some may call me a troll or a PS4 fanboy Im neither I just hate M$'s vision of the future and don't want them to succeed otherwise everyone else will copy them and we'll all be locked in and ripped off no matter which console we buy.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@ajay1708

To be fair they've always been the epitome  of a greedy monopoly, what with owning over 90% of the PC market and using every trick in the book to lock customers in and stifle competition.

Now that they're loosing money not keeping up with trends, they want to squeeze their dwindling user base for every penny they can with yearly subscription cloud based cons like office 365 and ultimately they intend to move xbox over to the cloud with yearly subscriptions for everything, with the threat of deleting your photos work and content if you don't pay up. Thats what this whole DRM thing is all about moving users away from what we want physical media and ownership. to the cloud where they can control us better.

@ajay1708 And they corrected BOTH products to meet consumer expectation. We all know the X1 policy reversal and Windows 8.1 is in beta testing as we speak. You can even download the preview build from MS for free if you already have Windows 8.

You think Sony would've changed their minds about something PS4 related if it was unpopular? Never! PSP Go anyone?? So yes, their initial ideas were flawed but they had the humility to change their vision to what consumers wanted instead. Give credit where credit is due. Not to mention, Microsofts'  features were very good and forward thinking.  It's just that they should've made both online & offline an option instead of forcing it one way or the other. Then it wouldn't have been such a big deal. The PS4 has shown nothing new to the interactive entertainment scene. Everything the PS4 does already exists. The X1 features are inline with what I expect from a next-gen machine.

I already have my Xbox1 w/Ryse already paid in full from Gamestop. The One's games look way better and more fun to play than anything I've seen for the PS4. I always said, if MS dropped the drm bullshit and crazy online policies it would be an awesome system. The tv functionality with Kinect is insane. It's great to have such a cool feature for something outside of games on the system.

The Kinect thing bothered me alot when the system was required to always be connected to the internet. Now that the console can function offline, that's not an issue to me anymore. Plus, how hard is it to turn the camera around and face it towards the wall?

Anyhow, I hope you guys have fun with your PS4, as I will eventually get one down the road. But right now the X1 has my attention... unless Sony comes up with a bomb-shell before launch.

@de-astroturfer @ajay1708 I hear you man. I used to actually like Microsoft but this past year something is very different about that company. It's almost like they're not even ran by the same people anymore. There is a huge contrast in all their product lines, take for instance; 360 to Xbox 180, Windows 7 to Windows 8. Two successful formulas in the 360 and Windows 7 thrown to the wayside in favor of two unpopular ideas in Xbox 180 and Windows 8. To the point of tarnishing there business relationships and losing fans. The difference between the two is staggering.
