Ubisoft: Watch Dogs' Chicago will feel alive

Creative director says thanks to power of next-generation consoles, NPCs will no longer feel like "robots that follow a sidewalk."

The Chicago in Ubisoft's upcoming open-world game Watch Dogs will feel like it is alive as a result of the power of next-generation consoles, according to creative director Jonathan Morin.

"Thanks to the next-gen, we can push the limits; we can make the player believe that when he does something, there are causes and consequences. I think that for the first time, players will not only be in a city, they will feel that people live in that city," Morin told Xbox Wire. "After all, every city is defined by its inhabitants."

Morin added that new technology like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 allow developers like Ubisoft to "go even further."

"For the very first time, NPCs around you are no longer robots that follow a sidewalk," Morin said. "They are real human beings with their own lives."

Ubisoft said last month that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Watch Dogs will feature fewer simultaneous onscreen characters. Though players won't get the same sense of crowd, the developer said all versions of Watch Dogs will be essentially "the same game."

Watch Dogs launches for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC on November 19. The Xbox One and PS4 versions will be released sometime this holiday.

Ubisoft expects the game to sell more than 6.2 million units. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Watch Dogs.

I CANNOT wait for this game. Bonus, I get to play in Chicago without having to live in that communist city.

The hype surrounding this game is bigger than the game itself.  It's THE game to watch.  Personally, I have low expectations.  This is all PR-talk but obviously, people are eating it up like candy.

Other than Killzone, I can't even think of a reason to buy a PS4 at this point.

Watch Dogs will have a more dynamic City on Xbox ONE than it will on PS4.

The new Dead Rising 3 trailer is awesome, but it's not available on PS4.

Forza 5 looks a billion times better than Gran Turismo 6.

Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will be better on Xbox ONE due to dedicated servers, impulse triggers and smart match.

And this game will PROVE the so-called Next Gen consoles will be better then PC for a period of time.

Considering next-gen games getting port from PC , I DONT THINK SO !

That was a big shitty lie from the beggining ....

...(the) creative director says thanks to power of next-generation consoles, NPCs will no longer feel like "robots that follow a sidewalk."

...in contrast with real-life human beings who do look like robots that follow a sidewalk.

how can they say "the versions will be essentially the same" and "thanks to next gen consoles we can do something we couldnt in the current gen" at the same breath?

UBI, we love you, watch dogs looks amazing, but dont shove that "thanks to next gen" crap at us. its BS. besides more polys on screen this game does nothing "thanks to next gen" if it can do it on current gen as well.

I'm curious why they're attributing this to the technology of the next consoles. Rockstar has been managing it fine since GTA IV and RDR. Those games actually feel alive and authentic. I can just wander around in them in a way that you can't do in games like Saints Row or Assassin's Creed. People actually do things and react to things. After over a  hundred hours in GTA I still notice details that I haven't noticed previously.

It seems like this statement has been said about every sandbox-style game since GTA III

Unfortunately in PC Ubisoft is trying to put UPLAY down our throats....

UPLAY is a annoying big pile of DRM it is mostly there to stop pirates from cracking their games and secondary it's mission is to act  like Steam.

Fails big time both as a DRM and as a Steam alternative LOL.

Real human beings with their own lives?  Oh please.  Turn off the marketing speak and just tell us what they do.

Cool I was going to buy this for PS4 anyways and my first game on PS4 other then Killzone 4.

They should learn techniques of handling crowd from Hitman games . Number of people on screen is huge in some levels yet game performance is solid and that's current gen .

Not really , all recent demos that you showed on consoles were nothing special including controversial "Ayesha Trailer" . Last year PC Demo is still best and recent trailer (Taken from most definitive version) after "Ayesha Trailer" for the purpose of damage control .

Anybody remembers Sleeping Dogs? That game looked fantastic on PC with Ultra settings (and it's current gen...)

Translation: get it for PC or next gen if you want the full experience.

PS. They could have done this on PC years ago, but they just have to sensationalize next gen to spur sales.

A game designed across all these different platforms is never going to be 'next gen' by any stretch of the imagination. It will look and possibly play slightly better on PS4 and X1 and that's about it.

Witcher 3 will be next gen. This game will be current gen on next gen consoles.

kik4444
kik4444

Pretty much all Bethesda games after Fallout 3 had NPCs that could do ALL of the things that Ubi said can only be done on next gen

@arqe PC's will always be more powerful then consoles. Sorry brah, just the way things are.

@arqe if you are speaking in terms of being more technologically impressive then you are wrong, that doesnt mean that next gen wont have some impressive improvements from the last gen though.

topeira

@flammable_zeus agreed. R* are the masters and i dont think this so called next gen title is going to out do what GTAV is going to do THIS gen. but we'll see. i wish i could have both of these games. sadly im a PC gamer.

@Cloud_imperium Though consoles will have one big advantage over PCs with this game: no U-Play.

blueinheaven

@Daian 1080p is a massive leap though considering PS3 and 360 can't even do 720p properly. I suppose you could argue this is what next gen should have been a few years back but at least it's coming and it means no more dreadful PC ports choked by console technology which is great news.

@kik4444

Except Bethesda games have a WAY smaller amount of NPCs than sandbox games such as SR, GTA, Prototype, True Crime, Sleeping Dogs, etc.

And they still act robotic. You haven't even seen the extent of what the devs are talking about. It's too early to judge.

slainta

@kik4444 Bethesda? Bethesda should first learn about how to code its games. Also the most alive things I see are the dragons still falling from the sky. Quite scary, actually.

arqe

@Zloth2 @Cloud_imperium Because of that U-Play i dont even play the series after Brotherhood. I did get them free by buying new graphic cards etc. Yet even the activating the cd-key took a whole day. U-Play is too complicated to use and incomplete product. Can never compete with Steam or Origin ever.

@Simplythebest12 GTA 5 isn't coming out on next gen console so it would be kinda impossible for them claim it's next gen lol.

blueinheaven

@Simplythebest12 Possibly, though I expect Rockstar to deliver an amazing game anyway. I'm not saying Watchdogs will be a bad game I just don't get the hype and I'm sure reviews will point out what they compromised for next gen to release it on all platforms.

@Kr0w1Nc4rNa73 @kik4444 Can you interact with every single NPC in those games like in Bethesda games ?

You cant even compare the NPC qualities.

SkytheWiz1

@slainta @kik4444 I'm forgiving towards Bethesda because, while their games ARE buggy, they keep me entertained longer than most. I'm tired of other "open-world" games that have nothing interesting to do other than getting the police to chase you.

Watch Dogs looks much more promising than GTA; I enjoyed GTA up until IV, and honestly haven't paid any attention to V.

blueinheaven
blueinheaven

@Daian @Simplythebest12 I assumed it was lol. Oh well, though that means your comment makes no sense. I wouldn't expect current gen to match next gen.
