Ubisoft unveils Final Fantasy and Limbo inspired Child of Light

Developer Patrick Plourde unveils the first glimpse of Child of Light at GDC Europe 2013.

Ubisoft has shown a first glimpse of Child of Light, a downloadable title currently being developed at Ubisoft Montreal.

Patrick Plourde speaking at GDC Europe 2013.

Speaking at a panel at GDC Europe, the game's developer Patrick Plourde--who was also the creative director on Far Cry 3--said Child of Light has been heavily inspired by the styles of Ghibli and Yoshitaka Amano, as well as classic Squaresoft PS1 RPG's Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy VIII.

Plourde said Child of Light will be a side-scroller that features RPG elements like stat growth and an epic "opera" story. The game will also feature co-op play.

The game is being designed as a "light" and "feminine" counterpoint to the male-focused games Plourde has previously worked on, and Plourde added that a third of the Child of Light development team is female.

Child of Light is being built using the UbiArt Framework, the same engine powering Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins. Plourde described it as a playable poem.

Platforms were not mentioned, but Plourde said he pitched the game to Ubisoft as a next-gen IP and confirmed the game would not be coming to mobile. Child of Light is due to be released in Winter 2013.

Plourde also added that Ubisoft was developing another unannounced game with the UbiArt Framework alongside Child of Light.

They better be careful when they parade the name Final Fantasy VI........They would have a LOT to live up to. I hope its pixel art style graphics.

I was hoping for some game-play video footage to be available.

I'm willing to give it a chance.

Being a side scroller, will that mean 2D too? If so I'm really keen to see the artwork.

This actually sounds interesting... Let's hope they deliver.

Sexual harassment waiting to happen.

I'm up for it.

they lost me at "feminine".

If it's a good game, that's good. But I'm skeptical when they start dropping the name of a bunch of really good games. Sounds like they're trying to scam you. "Oh we're making a game thats like limbo, and classic final fantasy(gloss over that they're reffering to 8). It's gonna be awesome, so you don't wanna miss it. Buy now for a limited time and get TWO free squeegees."

Cool. Is it for current or next gen platforms?

Euh, if it's inspired from Final Fantasy VIII, why is it Final Fantasy VI showing on the picture??

"Child of Light" is kinda nice name, unlike "Reveangence"

If they are really making it limbo + ff, it sounds awesome and I'll look forward to it, but I bet they're just saying it for marketing and hype unfortunately.  Need to see the gameplay before I get excited for this game or not.

Amano, Ghibli, Limbo, Vagrant Story, FF8!! I'd be so tempted if it wasn't being pitched to Ubisoft... Then again if they keep each game seperate without some random Desmond character to tie them all together... I'll keep an eye on it at least.

We get it you're not sexist haha...but game sounds great!

Limbo was great.

Every final fantasy game is terrible.  They are almost completely devoid of gameplay, all you do is walk around and select things in menus until you hit the next tiresome cut-scene. It's more like an interactive DVD. I've never understood how people can put up with the awful voice-acting and storyline.

@Tripwolf

I'm only going to give you a like because you managed to work in that reference.

@RedLegZeff

well, he said this at a panel mainly attended by other people in the industry. This isn't exactly the PR team at Ubisoft trying to sell the game to you.

@ChiefFreeman the last part of the article said it would be an IP for next gen.  hopefully its true

@ChiefFreeman

i don't think it's been fully announced, but seeing as it's apparently a downloadable game; it will be distributed on PSN/XBL. So the game will probably be on next-gen, and possibly current gen if it's only a few months away.

@KenderDragon According to the news editor, there were actually a few slides in the sequence (from other FF games) but the one that they managed to get a picture of was from VI.

@drodriguesaar Heavily inspired by those games, but from the perspective of female audience. Let's see where this goes, hope it's gonna be good and not a bishounen yaoi fest.

@Andyf1ghter You don't seem to have ever played an FF game. I hate FF and can tell you half of them are good games.

The FF7 hype though, as always, is undeserved. Tis a good game but not a great game, hoisted up by too many gen-x'ers.

hey buddy, 6, 7 and 9 are great.

JimmeyBurrows

@Andyf1ghterMost Final Fantasy games don't even have voice acting, so it's pretty safe bet you haven't played a decent amount of any of the games, not to mention the VA in XII is great, very original mix of accents rather than the usual trend of grab a bunch of Americans that sound completely out of place.

Complaining about a genre is pointless, enough people like it so it exists, not everyone is the same... Anyone could say Limbo is the worst game ever because of no dialog and no colours, but thats just as stupid as what you said, since it's part of what makes the game.

blee575

@Andyf1ghter What are you saying, dude.

The ps1 final fantasies are for gaming what Beethovens songs are for classical music.

The fact that you select things in menus (answers, stats, magic, attacks, items etc) is what RPG gamers like the most. Not all games must be based in real time action.

@maitkarro LOLed, yeah at these times it is best to be cautious or even pessimistic, because, if the result is a disaster the disappointment will be small.

@shingui5 I know that some dissagree, but I really believe ff8 was awesome too.

I liked the atmosphere, the story, the music and the junction-GF system. The only things that I didn't like was the final boss (especially when the previous ones were Kefka and Sephiroth) and the lack of freedom in the 4th cd.

@shingui5 Those are masterpieces, actually.  To call them great would be an insult.

@blee575 @Andyf1ghter Must say that the previous ones (FFI to FFVI) were great too. FFI was a great step in gaming and FFVI had a great story. All of the Final Fantasy games have great soundtracks (maybe a certain song in FFXIII can be left out though :D )

And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who plays games for the story. So even if somebody finds selecting equipment constantly tiring then you shouldn't play RPGs.

Xanedis

@blee575 @shingui5 Some people liked ff8, it is a fact, though majority likes to think it as the black sheep of the series. Me, I personally dislike it. Then again, as I have grown, Final Fantasy series has lost its charm, but I still look at it as the gateway to the world of RPGs.

blee575
blee575

@klaats @blee575 @Andyf1ghter You are right of course, they were great games. It's just that I got into jrpgs with ff7 (before that I barely knew they exist, and I was a Sega fan in the16bit era so I missed all the ff's untill the ps1 anyway). I played 5 and 6 in the anthology and cursed myself for spending my childhood only with beat em ups and platformers.

klaats
klaats

@blee575 @Andyf1ghter Oh yeah. And probably (one of)  the best/coolest characters I've ever met in a video game are from FF series.

Auron, Balthier, that ninja from FFVI (sorry, couldn't remember the name), Zack and many more.
