Ubisoft’s Open-World Racer The Crew Will Get Free Content After Launch

The Crew will get free content updates after launch to keep players engaged.

Ubisoft’s open-world racing game The Crew will get free content updates after it launches, Ubisoft has said.

“One of the things that I really want to do is to keep providing people with content after launch,” The Crew Creative Director Julian Gerighty said in a video interview posted to Ubisoft’s YouTube channel. “Free Content just to keep people engaged in the game. I really see this as your one stop shop for action driving.”

Ubisoft has previously positioned The Crew as the "World of Warcraft of driving games," and massively multiplayer online games of that type usually get a lot of free content in addition to paid post-launch content. As Ubisoft VP of digital publishing Chris Early recently said, Ubisoft is embracing the latter model as well, as players are more accepting of DLC and Season Passes.

The Crew lets you drive coast-to-coast across America, supposedly with no loading screens. You’ll be able to drive by familiar locations like Mount Rushmore and San Francisco, as well as a desert-based areas with off-road cars. The Crew is scheduled for release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 11, with a beta launching on July 23. GameSpot's own Carolyn Petit recently took a trip from Detroit to Miami in The Crew, so be sure to check out her preview for more on the game.

I like it how people can judge a game judge a game even without playing it

You guys must be some kind of prophets

Another potentially boring arcade racing game. Can't wait for DC to land

It's nice if we really get some free content after launch, but I became sceptical. The good time sof Burnout Paradise seem to be over

Lol I still think Mario Kart 8 being a better racing game....

its a ruse....they will probably give you car with some decals, the car which is already in the game, it will be labelled as free content. These marketing campaigns are getting more innovative. They are giving you something you would get  anyway and they label it free. hahhaha so funny,

Like a pair of rims... nice free content, bro

the driving in this game will be as horrible as in Watch Dogs. 100% guaranteed.

"as players are more accepting of DLC and Season Passes."

False, false and definitely false. The driving mechanics better be good, because after Watch Dogs I'm pretty skeptical about this game.

Well that is a new tactic Ubisoft. In the goal of reducing used game sales, trade ins or folks just giving their games away, they used to have same day download or the magical 3week DLC for purchase to encourage game purchasers to keep game a little longer to maximize sales. But that usually meant releasing games half done with DLC that is not only done by the time the game is released but usually critically part of the full game.

Instead, I wonder, is the new tactic: "lets chop off 15% of the finished game, and release it for free in critical time sensitive installments" It keeps gamers playing their game to see the end, and keeps terrible games from hitting the used game bin faster.

I do not mind DLC content like Skyrims Bioshock and Fallout, released months after the game came out and clearly self contained episodes separate from the main storyline.  But all in all I hate frivolous dlc anymore that is expensive or clearly missing from the main game.

So Ubisoft if you give us content that is a welcome addition to the main game, then great, but content that helps fill in a half done game, well then just keep it free or not.

NO WE'RE F***IN NOT UBISOFT!! Stop trying to convince everyone that gamers are ok with it..the gamers I know with an ounce of common sense know we're being scammed

Congratulations...you wipper-snappers and supporters of Season Passes and DLC have successfully funked up gaming.

Yeah I think I'm not the guy that buys DLCs and season passes since companies releasing copy paste games every year.

I can't wait for this game. I just really hope the physics model is entertaining enough to warrant playing it.

The game isn't even close to release or gold. Why not just add it in prior?

Oh wait - marketing.

After amazing job on car physics in Watch_Dogs i really believe they will make an excellent driving game :D

I won't be buying the crew on launch, I may pick it up used when its like £20 on ebay though.

1. driveclub is free, so I will already have a good driving game for just arcade style fun racing.

2. project cars is out at the end of the year, and is going to be the most technically superior racing game ever made. I would much rather have that.

both those bases are covered, the crew may be better than driveclub but I will wait till it is cheap and see what people say about it first before I decide whether to buy the crew. If I don't end up buying the crew then I will most likely be buying the extras for driveclub which of course is a lot cheaper than buying the crew lol.

Ubisoft giving free contents? What heresy is this?

Apparently they are just whinny about anything and everything

Although I personally like watch dogs, being a fan of stealth mechanics. Basically a lot of people went "all guns blazing" in a stealth based open world game, didn't like it and blame every game "produced" by the brand.

Yes, people are stupid.

@Zombrex it will still be bad. Its pulling up the rear behind Horizon 2 and DriveClub.

@Zombrex Yes, they can. I have particularly high hopes for this game, I really liked 'Driver: San Francisco'

@jenovaschilld Nice to hear that it's free because that's rare, but it makes you wonder because it doesn't say what will be free. And it's the boring "norm" now that most games have day one dlc or dlc very close to the main release, pretty pointless most of the time. Phew games I'm looking forward to anyway being honest, this game's one of 'em though.

Sevenizz
Sevenizz

Was this sarcasm? Cause I heard the opposite in a review.

@Aaronp2k driveclub is free to play....but only a few of the tracks. if you want the full game you'll have to stump up the cash

Sevenizz
Sevenizz

Umm, how do you know Drive Club is good without playing it or a single review?

Not every first party game of theirs is exactly stellar. In fact, so far they've been getting mediocre to poor reviews for PS4 releases.

berserker66666
berserker66666

@Aaronp2k  Don't forget Assetto Corsa for PC. That will be far more superior than Project Cars.

woodyfr

@tomservo51 It will be better than Drive "boring" Club. This and Project Cars will be the best racing games in 2014.

Zombrex
Zombrex

It's sad because I much prefer an open world racing game rather than one that's locked to tracks only.

Fuel was a great game (aside from the crushingly hard a.i.) and I'm looking forward to The Crew expanding upon that idea.

@Sevenizz They're not brilliant but they aren't as terrible as people are making them out.

@berserker66666 @tomservo51 Been skeptical since Far Cry 3. The game was good, don't get me wrong. But the e3 footage had trees and flora that are sky high. You could literally get lost in that jungle.

@Zombrex Those are both open world racing games. Horizon 2 and DriveClub.

Sorry not much of a racing game fan so I didn't know. But I like the idea of the massive open world of The Crew more.
