Ubisoft's open-world racer The Crew has been in development for six years

That means Ubisoft started development on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC racing game sometime around 2008.

The Crew, Ubisoft's upcoming open-world racing game for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, has been in development for at least six years. That's according to a new promotional website for the game spotted this week by Videogamer.

"After six years in development, The Crew is more than ever ready to hit the hands of gamers," a post on the Route 909 website says.

That means The Crew has been in development since 2008, long before Microsoft and Sony were officially talking about the Xbox One and PS4. Another new game from Ubisoft, this month's open-world action game Watch Dogs, was developed over the course of more than five years.

A "work in progress" version of The Crew will be playable at selected gaming centers around the world starting tomorrow, according to the Route 909 website. There are events scheduled for major cities like Montreal, London, Paris, New York, Dubai, and Copenhagen.

The Crew launches later this year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. For more, be sure to read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Your math skills are some of the best I've seen. :)

Sounds interesting, but I want a more realistic game about building and tuning cars, something that focuses on real-world vehicles instead of supercars. Something along the lines of Motor City Online. Let me build the car I have in my driveway and race it against other people's cars at the track and on the street. Doesn't anyone else get tired of seeing the same $100k+ cars in every racing game?

It basically means that it's game engine is outdated

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure They have.

Ubisoft likes to say that alot about all of their games recently.

Oh, so you've been working on this game for 6 years.  Just like you were working on AC3 when you released AC 2, and you were working on AC4 for a few years prior before releasing AC3?

Shut up Ubisoft. Go home. Your drunk.

@ERRMAHGERD - Really like Fuel and still own it. All these years since it's been out, it still holds the record for the largest open world map in a driving game. I just love to drive and explore in that game more than anything. But from what I read, it looks like The Crew will be taking the crown for actually surpassing it for largest open world not just driving game, but I think any type of game.

History suggests exceptionally long development times aren't a good thing, plus I've discovered a lot of these so-called "long developments" were mostly spent on creating trailers with like just 1 year for actual game development.

That better mean we get a high quality racing game... It would be disappointing if we didn't, considering this news.. But Ubisoft hasn't really put out a bad IP for the last few years, personally speaking

Thank God Gamespot did that math for me.  I was really struggling with 14-6.

That generally means the game went back to the drawing board at some point which doesn't bode well.

It obviously began production when the Ivory Tower staff finished Test Drive Unlimited 1 and left to found that company. I thought it was a known fact that they'd been working on this project ever since?

Looking forward to this.

This looks great. It will likely be one of the first games I pick up when I get one of the new consoles. I will probably buy one later this year now.

Here's hoping the population doesn't die between now and then.

This looks like what Fuel should have been.

and they stopped working due to the limitations of last gen consoles ?

This looks awfully similar to need for speed rivals with the ability to change your wheels, and that game was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring

I've played a racing MMORPG before so I'm sold on this game no matter how bad it is!

Any Drift City/Skid Rush players out there!?!?!

Didn't think so......

Long development cycles don't necessarily translate into great games.  Hopefully when these games come out their quality will justify such a long period of development and resources

Lining themselves up for a "what the **** have you been doing for 6 years?!" response when it releases then.

It seems every new game Ubisoft is putting out has been in development for 6 years. I hope that car above isn't from the game because it looks terrible. Six years and that's the best you can come up with? Hopefully that's a last gen model cause Forza 5 blows that away and the PS4 game looks much better also.

tr4newreck

a long development cycle is proof of nothing atm... if it flops its proof of squandering money and a horrible vision/pitch for a game that was approved by too many halfwits that will still keep their job even if it flops...

at best it might compete with forza or GT

@cctv100 Of course, because when you start developing a game there is no way known to human race on how update a graphic engine...

@deathstream Actually somebody else did that complicated math. Eddie just copied and pasted it.

@Spagalicious  This comment is so poorly constructed that i am surprised something so dumb could be posted.

@mattcake  good one, now come up with more retarded and pointless comments so i can have a good laugh at you.

@Vodoo  Have you seen crew gameplay, I dont think this game was meant to be graphically amazing. I still see this as a must buy.

This game won't be like GT or Forza, so it shouldn't look like it.

@Vodoo  Well first party games are always going to look better on the new console.

@ladies_man_xxx People always bring up the Duke argument where long game development cycles are concerned, but that game was passed around between a bunch of studios and was in development hell for 10 years, not neccessarily being worked on for 10 years. It was passed around by person to person from engine to engine and ended up as a big Frankenstein's monster of a game. This is a game that has been in development for half as long by one company, and is an IP that doesn't have a massive fanbase behind it. The two aren't really comparable.

edeep87
edeep87

@ladies_man_xxx Very good point indeed...they are now taking more time to release games and they are not worth the wait and the hype. This is kindda sad !

tableofjapan

@thecman25 @tableofjapan

let me ask you this then.....

How could they have been working on this game for PS4 and Xbox 1 and PC....when the technology they use today, didn't even exist 6 years ago?

rskueem
rskueem

@soccerpzn @rskueemI heard a rumor a long time ago that Ubisoft is working on racing game and if i'm not that racing ip is the crew. Open world racing mmo shouldn't take that long time for development, they waited for current gen consoles imo :) Sounds like Rainbow Six Patriots that was coming on 360 and PS3 but now Ubisoft started over on a new version of the game that aimed at X1 and PS4.

I mean the grammar is all there, so I bet you've probably seen worse.

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@tableofjapanIt's called "upgrade". It was done a lot of time in that past. "Crackdown", for example, was originally designed for the first Xbox.

Dude, this kind of stuff is common knowledge, looks like you want an excuse to bash on Ubisoft or something. If that is the case you have a lot of front to attack them. Just... this one is not the correct one.

soccerpzn
soccerpzn

@Spagalicious  Its not the grammar its the way your presenting your idea, it makes no sense. Like are you saying that this looks like speed rivals because you can change the wheels and are you suggesting that The Crew is boring based solely on that? and nvm the fact that it seems you haven't even bothered to look up what The Crew is actually about before posting your comment.
