Ubisoft reveals Valiant Hearts: The Great War for Xbox One, PS4

Downloadable 2D platformer set during World War I inspired by real letters from the time; also coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 in 2014.

Ubisoft today announced Valiant Hearts: The Great War, a downloadable 2D platformer that is inspired by actual letters from World War I. The game will launch in 2014 for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. No mention was made of a Wii or Wii U release.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is currently in development at Ubisoft Montpellier, the same team behind Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. It is being created using the UbiArt Framework engine, which also powered the latest Rayman console games.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War tells the story of four strangers who come together on the battlefield to help a young German soldier find love. The story is focused on survival, sacrifice, and friendship, Ubisoft said.

The five playable characters will solve puzzles and sneak through enemy lines alongside a "faithful canine companion" for certain periods of the story. The story is set during a "dark" time in history, but Ubisoft pointed out that there are lighthearted and comical moments throughout the entire game.

Ubisoft lost its way a little I think in the middle of this generation, but they are certainly roaring back with the onset of the new one. Tons of great stuff coming out of their various studios.

This is why I like Ubisoft. They always take risks. Unlike Activision and, to some extent, EA.

Looks cool...since this is not a resource-demanding game, I wonder if there will be any difference at all between the 360 & X1 version.

Finally a game about war that is neither a Codish power fantasy nor a strategy game, I'm in.

This looks amazing. Hope to see more AAA publishers and devs taking risks this coming generation.

Once I read that it was coming from the peeps of Rayman Origins and Legends, I immediately said that I will buy it day 1. They know how to do 2D right.

This actually looks very well done. I find it cool that actual World War 1 personal letters were used as inspiration for some of this. I'll be keeping a eye on this one.

Not sure if a winner but I applaud companies that think outside of their multi million dollar franchises

this isn't my kind of game and it's highly unlikely that I would get it. with that said, it has potential to be a creative game. we'll see how far ubi pushes it.

While I somewht dislike the clichéd piano-music, I'm still really interested in this strange game.

@vildanturic Ubisoft is definetly on fire lately, they are releasing all these awesome games, they also make these little 2D games and all kinds of stuff. And the best of all, they are all more or less historical or cultural accurate.

robchiang1990

@shingui5 Is this a joke comment? I mean dog as faithful canine companion can reach back at least Half-life 2, and then Fable 2, COD is such a king of parody..

@AzelKosMos I forgot that game. thank you. so it is about 6 games in this moment we are waiting from ubisoft. cool

moonlightwolf01

@ziproy @shingui5 Fallout had the faithful canine companion "dogmeat" over a decade before COD. Damn it COD has ruined canine companions for everyone
