Ubisoft picks up Hasbro license for next-gen games

Assassin's Creed publisher to develop and publish current- and next-gen console games based on franchises like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Battleship.

Ubisoft and Hasbro today announced a new partnership that will allow the Assassin's Creed publisher to develop and publish current- and next-generation games based on board game franchises like Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Risk, Battleship, and Cranium.

"We look forward to collaborating with Ubisoft to offer consumers innovative new ways to experience their favorite gaming brands," Hasbro SVP and GM of digital gaming and corporate development Mark Blecher said in a statement.

Ubisoft SVP of sales and marketing Tony Key added that the French publisher is "thrilled" to have the opportunity to create console games based on the company's brands.

Ubisoft did not announce any new Hasbro games today.

Ubisoft is not the only rights-holder for Hasbro games. Electronic Arts last month announced a new four-year partnership with the company for mobile games, while Activision continues to hold the rights for the Transformers series.

Everything Hasbro has put their name on lately has been crap. Enter Ubisoft, the new EA/Activision imo, signing up to make these licensed games.

Hasbro probably gave them a good deal, but Ubisoft will put the bare minimum effort into the project (like always) then over-hype it as revolutionary or something.

Expect very mediocre games folk, just sayin'.

Too bad this couldn't lead to some GOOD G.I.Joe games. There hasn't been a good G.I.Joe game since the one on the Super NESS. And for fuck's sake DON'T put The Rock in it....he's the worst thing to happen to G.I.Joe ever.

I know Most of the Comments on this story are going to be snaky and angry but I personally couldn't be happier about this. I LOVE Monopoly. I love Boardgames in general. Monopoly Streets was Awesome I hope the Next Monopoly Video game is an upgrade of that.

Glad Activision still holds the rights to Transformers, given how much fun War For Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron are. Just let High Moon Studios keep doing their thing :D

How about a GI Joe game that follows the comic storylines instead of the movies?

And no lasers like the cartoons.

I think it'd be cool to see more game related board games. We have the Bioshock game coming out, there was the Halo Risk, and there's a ton of monopoly games with video game themes. I'd really like to see original games like the Bioshock one though (hope it's good!)

Hasbro makes Lego-like building blocks called Kre-O's.  I'd love to see Ubisoft make Kre-O video games:  Kre-O Transformers: The Video Game.

@Andrew1073 True that!

But if Hasbro is the trojan horse to get tabletop games to Ubi, I can deal with it. ;)

@cogadh I bet they're making it all sadly, at least until sales go down for a while.

They board game ones should to fine (it would be hard for any dev to mess those up), but the others I will be very skeptical of.

Then I again, I don't care for Ubisoft games.

@Nicholas Gibson Yeah those were some of the few acceptable movie-licensed games of this gen.

@bkohary Growing up I always liked the lasers in the cartoons. I never got to read the comics though.

@bkohary Activision has the rights to Transformers, we have no idea yet what Ubisoft has. But they don't really do Call of Duty or Battlefield type games well.

I could totally see a Dishonored style G.I. Joe game though. Only with vehicle stages too.

At the very least we might also see some Friendship is Magic 2D platformer/adventure game as well since it's labeled a priority brand.

If I could choose though, I'd love for Dishonored team to get G.I.Joe and the Rayman crew to get MLP.

Apologies if you're offended by mentions of ponies btw, just commenting on the potential brands that are left for Ubisoft to take on.
