Ubisoft: Gamers want Assassin's Creed every year

Montreal boss Yannis Mallat says as long as quality remains, gamers will come back every year for more.

by

Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat does not think gamers are turned off by the idea of a new Assassin's Creed game every year.

"No," Yannis Mallat told Eurogamer this week. "The players will tell us. Right now there are more and more coming into the franchise, so I don't see that day."

Mallat explained that as long as each new entry is a quality product, gamers will continue to come back every year for more.

"It's our breakthrough. When you have quality content, the frequency of coming out with the game is not an issue at all. On the contrary, people expect more and more of that content," Mallat added. "So it's natural to be able to provide that content. The gamers are happy and it's our job to make them happy."

Ubisoft has released a new core Assassin's Creed game every year since 2009. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag launches October 29 and a follow-up is already in the works.

Beware this model, Ubisoft. AC3 was a beautiful enormous environment, with not that much to do in it (other than running). There are only so many things your audience can kill by pushing SQUARE TRIANGLE CIRCLE.

Lost my interest after revelations. Heard only mixed reviews of III and still haven't played it. Black flag is not even out and a sequel, likely the first of many, is already in production.

I can understand the strong demand though, AC is one of those franchise that only starts to pull in the large masses of casual gamers after a certain number of installments. AC I seemed probably too 'different' to most gamers at first glance but the franchise has proven itself since and casuals feel safe now dropping their cash on an AC game. So as the full potential of an AC game, as a commercial product, is only now being reached it makes sense for ubisoft to release yearly.

I won't buy into it though. somewhere between BH and Rev I realised how simplistic and repetitive AC's gameplay is: climbing? piece of cake, the game does it all for you. Combat? press the counter button when the icon above your enemy starts flashing, chain kills will mop up the rest, done. Stealth? with all those options and the dumbest guards alive you can pretty much breeze through any enemy stronghold. Exploring? EVERYTHING is marked on your map.

When AC starts to implement gamplay elements that require more skill  and brainpower than simply memorizing the controlscheme, i might come back to it (not that I'll be missed as i'm sure some will tell me soon enough :p ), things like free-jumping platforming, or combo based hack-n-slach combat. But most likely that'll never happen.

you guys look at a couple comments on some websites saying stuff like "we no want AC no more" and start claiming that no one wants them. But each game sells more millions than its predesessor, so yes, people want them. Commentors are mostly but hurt retards with no money, so they start bashing.

Because until III happend every game was very atmospheric and caputred the spirit of the unique and varied settings with awesome main characters that had a deep and interesting personality and story to tell. And then an indian guy with absolutely NO character and climbing wood, trees and stones and 20 times the same copy & pasted cathedral + absolutely NOTHING of architectural interest / great cultural buildings to climb happend.....

assasssins creed is the best series i reckon, but they should take 2 years on working on one so it changes everything coz they are all the same maby 3 was alot better in controls and the engine but the rendering was terrible and all the glitches that happen. the series has gone down from brotherhood.

Since quality did not exist in AC3, time for a break!

Yes. No more assassin creed for now

"Yannis Mallat says as long as quality remains"... That hasn't been the case for 2 years. He knows full well that Ubisoft can release any sort of trash and it will still sell. Money is the bottom line here and him mentioning the word 'quality' just makes me laugh.

i think it should take a break once in a while. i mean, ive never played the series before myself, but AC4 already announced seems kinda... overwhelming. :/

I think instead of staying in the past they should make it more modern.

If they ever make something like Revelations again they will need to take a break.

I played the first 4 games but I just stopped. I'm tired of climbing walls and doing the same things again and again. They maybe doing some refresh in each title but the core of the game is still the same. Ubisoft themselves know that or else they wouldn't be starting such discussion in the first place.

I'm just saying that there will always be whiners whether or not that game is an annual release. I think the problems of AC games are their engine, Anvil (Next) is not a really great engine, and the storytelling is dragging on too long and rushing when close to the ending (since Brotherhood). If the devs can improve those things then, I think, everyone won't mind the annual release.

Still, I really want a new POP game without Anvil.

U wrote it as if u thought i didn't played any other games than the AC ones :P Sorry if i was a bit harsh in my reply, i'm just tired of people hating on other peoples taste but i guess i misunderstood your comment but you did wrote it like it was aimed at me and that u thought that i didn't played any other games etc. :P But yeah there definitely are better developers than Ubisoft, i do like Irrational and Arkane Studios more but Ubisoft still do a great job with AC :)

I loved AC and AC2 and even brotherhood. Hell, i even have a 3" poster of AC on my wall. But that shouldnt make me blind to the fact that, having so much potential as being a completely new genera, they turn it into a money machine.

dude... i think you didn't understand my comment. For me its better to look forward for a grate game, then waiting for SAME thing again and again for the rest of life.

I love playing them every year. As long as they do it right and don't rush them, they will always have my money. I've played and beat them all so far. Keep up the good work and keep them coming.

Haha how ignorant are some people. Read what i wrote again. Me if anyone play like every new game that comes out and yes i have played Bioshock and it was absolutely amazing. I have also played the new Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 and so on, all the new big games that have released so far in 2013 and i have enjoyed them all. If you try out different games like, Bioshock Infinite, you will see there other good developers in the sea. UBIsoft is NOT THE ONLY game dev that was given the HOLY responsibility of making games.

The game's are amazing, so I'll play every one, but honestly they might as well keep going 'cause they're already milking the series like they did with CoD.

Are they serious? Why the hell don't these people listen?

"It's our breakthrough. When you have quality content, the frequency of coming out with the game is not an issue at all. On the contrary, people expect more and more of that content," Mallat added.

Ok so where is the quality that they are talking about? I played ACIII, it is/was a beautiful game to look at but it was a damned bug ridden mess. I am not the 1st to say this and I won't be the last. If you are keen on releasing a AC title on an annual basis, then for f***s sake... sort the game's issues first?

Listen to the actual Gamers, not Marketers? This just angers me!

@punksterdaddy maybe for you...but...for me, the game ran really well and was a "quality product" in my eyes. I am actually for them making a new game every year (but my wallet disagrees).

@lt_kiji @punksterdaddy

Well if it worked fine for you, I can't argue with that. I'm glad someone got it to work properly? You had no issues at all?

The British convoy in the Frontier of my game, I had attacked it and killed all. The convoy remained there for the entire length of the game.

As a result of glitches like these, there were a few achievements I was unable to unlock. If the game was not released like this in the 1st place, I wouldn't have had a reason to complain... but it was!

lt_kiji
lt_kiji

@punksterdaddy @lt_kiji Yeah, that's weird...when I have problems with a game, I send an email to the company about the problem (where I saw it and what exactly went wrong), that way they can fix it (unless they don't read the message). The process of bug/glitch/error fixing is long, tedious, and boring (making mistakes and missing stuff is really easy to overlook when making a game of scale like this).
