Ubisoft completes Anno dev acquisition

Assassin's Creed publisher purchases remaining 70 percent of stake in Related Designs for undisclosed sum.

by

Ubisoft has completed its acquisition of Anno developer Related Designs. The Assassin's Creed publisher previously owned 29.95 percent of the company and has now executed a cash transaction to acquire the remaining 70.05 percent.

Terms of the deal were not specified.

Related Designs was established in Mainz, Germany, in 1995. The developer created the Anno real-time strategy series, as well as other RTS titles like No Man's Land and Castle Strike.

With Ubisoft now in control of the company, Related Designs' 65-person staff will continue its work on the browser-based free-to-play massively multiplayer online game Might & Magic Heroes Online. In addition, the studio will work with Ubisoft-owned Blue Byte on "future titles."

"We're happy to formally join Ubisoft," Related Designs managing director Thomas Pottkamper said in a statement. "This move validates our longstanding partnership and provides our teams with additional resources to expand upon their great work."

There goes the last chance of ever getting uPlay and online DRM patched out.
Time to scratch Anno 2070 off my "to buy when DRM is removed" list for good then.

oh please oh please oh please don't screw this up Ubisoft.  Anno series is easily one of my favorite city-building franchises (Anno 2070, I think ive got like 400 hours in lol).

I hope this means more releases, not fewer.

 Is it wrong of me to, a year from now, expect to see an article detailing the firing (or downsizing/streamlining) of said employees?

Hope I'm wrong cause I love the Anno games, even got over my hatred of Uplay for  2070... although I do feel dirty for it.

Anything that helps produce more Anno games, I'm in favor of. Anno 1404 is sheer Sim hotness. I plan to buy 2070 as soon as all content gets bundled...

ANNO series is one of the best RTS ever made. Don't screw this one Ubisoft. I want my ANNO in space or whatever interesting ANNO Related Design can make.

It's too bad not more people know about Anno 2070 which is so much better than that always online crap that is the new Sim City.

Wow, never even heard of this series and my mouth is already watering to play it.  As a console gamer, this is the stuff that keeps me coming back to the PC.

One of the best series in all of gaming imo.

Played 300 hours of Anno2070 and still enjoying it!

Here's to hoping for less DRM. Or at least, proper security. I hope the uPlay hack doesn't lead to them going massively overboard on security. That's NOT the right thing to do. Just fix things.

Good move to Ubisoft, anno 2070 is a top quality game. They have now very talented devs at their disposal.

Sounds like the end of Anno, shame.

Dammit...Ubisoft you better get another ANNO Game out as long as this team lives.

Sad. Hopefully some years down the line after they're all laid off they'll form an indie company and go back to making games that continue the legacy of the Anno series.

At first I thought the image was a picture of the dev team headquarters. And I suddenly realized why game development was so expensive...

Ugh, reminds me when Ubisoft bought Massive Entertainment, then Massive stopped being an RTS dev, all hopes for another Ground Control or World in Conflict buried.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the end of the Anno series - and it continues to grow into the future.

@khankalili Relate works closely with Blue Byte Studios. They also keep their independence so no, don't expect people getting fired.

@Trickymaster it is an incredibly good game.  i

I was also a fan  of anno 1404 (except for the annoying character voices which thankfully they fixed in 2070).  I really hope this news does not mark the death nor the dumbing down of the Anno series.

@Daian Don't worry. The way it's going, I think that the Anno series is gonna join the crap soon...

@Ghostdog201

Well, as long as you have to come back to the pc for these kind of games, we're ok. We should be worried when it was the other way around... But with Ubisoft buying it, a multiplatform release might not be far from reality...

Warlord_Irochi

@tim1935 Anno 2070 already had it... and then it was removed. First gatter info, then talk.

@MAD_AI

I really hope that is not the case in this situation. Anno is too good to lose!

@Warlord_Irochi @khankalili

So maybe you can slap those lazy Relate workers into fixing the memory problem in Anno 1404. Also while you're at it kick anybody who had anything to do with homm 6 in the nads.
