Ubisoft CEO says next-gen won't be the last

Yves Guillemot believes Xbox One, PS4, Wii U won't be the last round of consoles.

The next-generation of consoles won't be the last, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

Speaking with CVG, Guillemot said he envisions a console future beyond the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

"I still think it is not the last generation, because the manufacturers want a way to control their platform and the machine is the best way to have a specific access to that," he said.

God of War creator David Jaffe holds a different opinion, saying in June 2012 that dedicated consoles will die off after the Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4.

"I'll go on the record and say that the next generation of hardware will be the last consoles. And they should be," Jaffe said at the time.

Elsewhere in the interview, Guillemot--who has been critical of the extended length of the current-generation cycle--said the industry has the potential to grow "very fast" with the arrival of the Xbox One and PS4 this holiday.

"What I'm happy with is, because we've been waiting for a long time, if we really come with high quality games then the public will come very quickly to buy them. So we will see a big increase in the market," Guillemot said.

No way in hell will this be the last round of consoles!

I doubt it'll be the last.  Maybe the last of traditional disk based consoles as everything will be strictly digital.  We saw it become an option on a limited level of this generation and cloud storage was there in a small factor.  Now in the upcoming generation everything will have an option of digital day 1 focusing heavily on cloud.  Microsoft was right we are headed in age of digital however their actions were played out a little too soon.  Maybe in 10+ years we will be ready for something like that.

Consoles are starting to look more like the Call of Duty franchise. It's not about what the consumers want anymore, it's about being able to keep their hands on their wallets.

As long as console gaming remains popular, it will never die. The same can be said for any other form of gaming, to be honest.

However, I do think the market won't be as console-centric as it used to be, with other formats providing people with more ways to play games. I think we'll see more of a split in the market, but I don't see console gaming becoming unpopular any time soon.

...Ok, I'm fine with him saying this won't be the last gen, but his reasons really suck. "It won't be the last gen because we won't be able to control the consumer and gouge him for money without consoles. Oh and it makes people interested in buying games when we force them to spend 400-500 dollars on a new system. I mean if we had to get them interested in new games by making really cool new games that would be annoying." Seriously? Just say you think you'll be able to make really cool games that people will want to buy in the gen after this, or that consoles still have improvements to be made, innovations to change gaming. NOT ABOUT HOW TO PULL MONEY OUT OF US FOR AS LITTLE WORK AS POSSIBLE!!!

it would be just dumb to say that this would be the last Gen. This isnt news its obvious.

Not suprising since consoles are still way behind pcs in graphics and performance.

I just hope that we don't have another 7 year gap for new systems again. I mean, I was 26 when the Xbox 360 came out and I'm 32 now. If they keep this up I'll be nearly 40 when they release another system. LOL

It's going to be the last as far as traditional understanding of what a gaming console is and does. Microsoft already abruptly started the migration and Sony will probably follow in the next round. Centralized entertainment and full digital distribution, that's where they want to go.

A full gaming streaming service would definitely be the nirvana for those companies since they will have a full control over their licences and consumers gaming experience.

The steam box will take a major chunk out of the sales and Microsoft and Sony will make their own " steam box's " and everyone will essentially be a PC gamer just without the keyboard and mouse.

I sure hope this generation (the 8th) won't be the last. With so many new resolutions coming out and PC gaming continuously evolving, how could it be? The PS4 and Xbox One are essentially gaming PCs cloaked as gaming consoles, and you can't tell me otherwise. Just looking at the specs on the inside would tell you this. I look forward to see the future of gaming, but for now, I'm enjoying the 7th generation and will jump into the 8th generation probably a year after the PS4 is released.

Lol if you said the opposite, you'd be saying gaming is dead. So a pretty easy thing to say as a CEO of a gaming company. Now when that next gen will be, good luck on that one. Wii U should think about sooner than later.

Of course it won't be the last, console and PC gaming will never die, neither retail or digital download either.

I don't think consoles will ever lose their spots.  Maybe in the future PCs will lose their spots to consoles though, because hey...  A word processing app on a console makes more sense than gaming on a PC.

Not to say gaming on a PC can't be awesome, just that people's needs have changed and there is less demands for Desktop PCs than entertainment centers that can do more.

Look forward to the time we have the type of power that is more than enough for devs and photo realism is achievable in every type of game, be it open world etc but for me I don't believe there is any rush quite happy with current gen graphics and for me next gen will be more than enough for years to come.

I can't help but agree with the GoW guy.  He said dedicated consoles will be gone.  You can almost say that now.  These arent just gaming machines anymore.  I think they will be vastly different next time around from anything we have had before.

The only way this will be last gen is if they get cloud gaming perfect. Processing power doesn't matter if you're just streaming a video.

shingui5
shingui5

the only way the next-gen will be the last is if sales of the consoles becomes very low, and the consoles themselves stop making their respective company's money.

This is not yet the case. In fact, the next console gen has a great possibility of actually increasing the console sales. Sony themselves have even upped their own sale projections for their console.

I suppose it's a case of wait and see. But to prematurely say the next gem is the last, is raw speculation, with little facts to back it up.

Of course this won't be the last gen.  If Playstation and Xbox got out of consoles there would be someone right behind them to pick up where they left off.  Think about how much money would be left on the table between PS and Xbox leaving, there is no way someone would not step in and pick up right where the console makers left off.

@tommynj and pc is way behind the console price-wise. the graphic diff isn't all that great.

streamline

@tommynj I think the end of consoles will have more to do with devices like the Occulus Rift that can make use of the greater computing power of PCs. If we can get more immersive gaming w/o a TV, I can't think why I would need a gaming console. Certainly not for the Xbox Kinect or PS Move. There might be a niche console market for people who like games like Rock Band, but it would make more sense to make that game for PC than for a niche market. Maybe that's why MS is trying so hard to break into the TV market with their new TV features of the Xbox One.

Sohereiam
Sohereiam

@bigmikeOK the next gap will be even bigger due the power of these generation consoles surpassing PC power for a few years.

hystavito
hystavito

@frozenux  Yes these guys will be able to claim they were right simply due to traditional understanding as you say.  Convergence was being talked about for ages, and consoles have already been used for more than gaming for a long time.  Wasn't there a stat recently about certain consoles being used more for Netflix than for gaming?

I think what makes a console a "console" is less to do with gaming and more to do with how closed the platform is.  For me that's the important distinction, because if user's could arbitrarily install any software from any source they want, we would just call these things a computer.

BlendThree

@holtrocks The Steambox was indeed looking like the game changer you describe until they began announcing pricing that could make a custom-gaming PC builder blush! I'm hoping they come around to a price point that makes it a viable option.

holtrocks

@GrandMaster555 People have been saying that the PC market will die out for years yet every year it continues to grow. If anything i think the 2 will merge like what is happening with the Steam Box, then desktop gamers will kinda of be the purists and really the only difference will be keyboard and mouse vs controller.

@Sohereiam @bigmikeOK You know, CNET pointed this out already but these next gen systems are more like modern PC's rather then shall we say high end PC's like the last generation. So I hope I won't be in my retirement years when they finally release the next consoles.

@Deathstroke_69 @meharu 4k gaming on the xbox one...up-scaled that is.Sure they could run 4K native but at what frame-rate and graphical details? You need like 3 titans in SLI to be able to run bioshock infinite at 4K on max settings(No AA of course) and the thing can barely hit 30fps and it's not exactly a demanding game. And even if you take the optimization factor into account i hardly see how this is going to happen without a ludicrous hit on the FPS and visuals.

gaming_binge

@holtrocks @GrandMaster555 they just announced on multiple news sources that PC sales are on a consecutive steady decline in sales, year after year due to tablets and smart phones

UnstoppableKARL
UnstoppableKARL

@frozenux Bingo, some people just don't understand that.  When you increase the resolution, you're essentially making everything that processes the graphics as a whole work twice as hard = always a massive performance hit, unless you have the power to back it up.
