Two studios making this year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Activision promises "near photorealistic" world

Activision says three-year dev cycle has allowed for a more visually impressive game; Sledgehammer is making Xbox One/PS4/PC versions, while another studio will develop Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

In a press release this afternoon, Activision formally announced Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and revealed that two studios are working to bring the game to market this November. Sledgehammer Games is working on the Xbox One/PlayStation 4/PC versions, while a separate studio to be named later is handling the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 versions. Multiplayer shooter Titanfall was developed in a similar way; Respawn Entertainment handled the Xbox One and PC versions, while Bluepoint Games developed the Xbox 360 iteration.

There's no mention of a Wii U version for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the first entry in the blockbuster series developed as part of Activision's new three-year, three-studio development cycle. That's not the only first. It's also the first game in the franchise where characters will have super-abilities through an exoskeleton suit. Activision also promises a "riveting" new story, led by Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey, who plays Jonathan Irons, the leader of a fictional private military corporation.

"It's been a lot of fun working with the team to bring Jonathan Irons to life. The technology is truly remarkable and unlike anything I've done before. I'm excited to see where this goes," Spacey said in a statement.

Here's how Activision sets up the story for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare:

"Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare jolts players forward in a groundbreaking experience that's ripped-from-the-headlines-of-tomorrow, envisioning a future where both technology and tactics have evolved to usher in a new era of combat for the franchise. Set in the year 2054, a private military corporation (PMC) has emerged with the power to rescue humanity from a devastated world struggling to rebuild after a global attack on its military and infrastructure. You are the advanced soldier. Empowered with new, cutting-edge exoskeleton abilities, technological advancements, and high-tech gear, players join the ranks of a highly-trained, specialized unit committed to restoring order in a state of advanced warfare."

According to to Activision, the new three-year Call of Duty development cycle meant that Sledgehammer Games was able to create a "near photorealistic world unlike any Call of Duty before."

"With the expanded production capabilities, Sledgehammer Games is able to create an astonishing new, next generation experience, featuring an array of technical advancements from the sights and sounds that create a near photorealistic world unlike any Call of Duty before, to new performance capture and facial animation technologies that deliver lifelike characters, to a rich and immersive story that brings the fiction to life," Activision said.

Blah blah blah !!! Call it 'Advanced Warfare' or 'Primitive Warfare'.. it's still the SAME SHIT. I ain't no mentally unstable person to dish out my dough on something that hasn't aged well in video gaming. Plus, it's the same corny plot with terrorists as the whipping boys. God... do COD devs think their fans are sheep ? Looking at the new trailer with the same stuff being circled around, I do think so.

I'd rather takes promises of a new Singularity or Prototype games from this Publisher. :(

We think they are liars.

They think we are idiots.

We have a love-hate relationship. Mostly hate but what do they care as long as we buy their games?

I mean they might seriously drop the ball with this iteration. Hmm exosuits like crysis wall jumping like Titanfall, you can't just make a mish mash of popular games and expect it to be good. What's wrong with modern military shooters? Right, they've been done over and over again, but people like them because they are "loosely" based on real life. We need some shooters with normal guns, not photon rifles or jet packs. I know that COD and Battlefield have had the same type of modern weaponry for a long time, but the fact of the matter is we need a couple shooters with that time period.

You don't need to switch up the time period and add super futuristic weaponry to vary the series. What you need is to improve upon the existing modern military shooter format! Killstreaks are great, until you have stupidly overpowered or cheap ones. Perks are great, until you have ones that make you virtually invisible and able to lunge knife someone from 10 feet away. Make a BALANCED modern shooter without all the gimmicks. And PLEASE take away the one hit knife kills from the front, they are just terrible game design and you know it. Add more customization, while ensuring that you don't add a scope that can track targets and see through walls. Add new perks or equipment that is balanced and fun! You want body armor so you can take more bullets to the chest? Fine, make you move slower with it on. You want to be a quick assassin, make a lighter armor that allows you to move faster at the expense of durability. I mean it's that simple, you know why the original modern warfare was the best one: BALANCE!!!!!!!

"Near photo realistic". It is frustrating that they expect you to believe them because they tell you its true even though you have your own eyes and your own brain and can see that it is not.

Does anyone else remember when Xbox One was launching and they had several of their marketing videos on the 360 dashboard. In one of them, the guy kept referring to the system and the technology in it as "Magical". If I did a shot every time the he said that the system was "Magical" I would have been wrecked. I'm not saying the Xbox one is bad, I have the One and a PS4 as well, I like them both very much, but neither is magical.

I understand they will do whatever they have to do to sell their product. I can't blame them for that. But when I see this, and we see it a lot from all over the gaming industry, I can't help thinking that they believe we are lemmings that cant think for ourselves and will just believe whatever we are told. All the while, you know that just like us, they sat around the table with their own eyes and brains watching the same clip we did and knew this was nothing special.

It's like... Oh I don't know, maybe making a big deal about AI fish that swim out of your way.

Disappointed that we're not getting a WW1/2 game, would have been a nice change for CoD to go back to its roots.

I haven't played a COD since MW2. I'd be open to playing another one if this turns out be interesting.

At least this won't be held back by cross-gen limitations. Also a three year dev cycle at least opens up the possibility of them bringing something new to the table. I'm willing to suspend my cynicism on this one.

Near photorealistic!  Assuming you've got a cheap camera with shallow focus depth.  Though at least the lens flare seems to have been cut out.

Activision promises "near photorealistic" world. They also stated that the game will suck in all other aspects, just like with previous games.

I think the graphics are vastly improved over previous COD games, does the graphics look near photorealistic? No but it looks just as good as Killzone shadow fall

The sad thing is, this may sell me on getting a new PlayStation, yes I know my PC is vastly superior for gaming experience, but COD on PC just freakin sucks, and I haven't played since MW3( actually liked it). As long as they do there last minute MP bonanza before release and it doesn't reek of crap, I may have to get back into it.

By "another studio will develop Xbox 360 and PS3 versions", do they actually mean "we'll have a PC set to batch convert every asset in the game in to a dirty mongoloid of it's previous version" ?

It gets better every time I watch it. Say what you want, but few can argue how beautiful this looks. I suppose the PC Master Race can get all cocked up about it, but when you compare the differences between generations (consoles) it's hard not to marvel.

This time focus on Netcode, anti-cheats, dedicated servers, optimization and a smooth gaming experience. Give me a multi-player experience without lag, hackers and the need to speed more money on a new GPU just to get a constant 60 fps and I might come back to the table. I'd rather have a good looking game that runs a constant 60+ fps than a pretty game that I can't get 30 fps on.

@starjay009 Ill line up with all the other mentally unstable kids outside gamestop on release day to pick up my copy like I do every year. Its not about the Campaign its about the Multiplayer everyone that plays CoD knows this. Maybe you just resent the game because youve always been real bad at it either way you suck.

You pretty much described Rainbow Six Vegas.

I agree though, they need to focus more on a good foundation and mechanics, rather than gimmicks.

@Bryjoered07

Yeah but the problem with that is to many people would complain about it being the "same thing" every year. Of course they will probably do that anyway. However that hurt Activision in CoD:Ghosts. They tried keeping it "modern" and look what that did to their sales.

@AyatollaofRnR It looks like it is a transitional-gen title. Not quite an all out next gen game. I haven't played COD since MW1 but I'll keep an eye out on this one too.

@freedomzealot They don't.  There are usually more people playing BF4 than Ghosts on PS4.  258k "likes" and there are rarely more than 30k playing at any given time.

@freedomzealot Closest thing to a monopoly on a genre you will ever see, i'm suprised we even have a Battlefield game release occasionally.
 Could you imagine if GTA came out every year also? There would be very few alternatives like Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row, Just Cause, ect.

smokeless_0225

@ohara1974

And I suppose you either:

1) Live in another country where the government is totally not corrupted. (Yeah right!)

or 2) Live in the US where men and and women have died to give you the freedom to talk the way you are.

We can argue all day on how corrupt the US government is. I agree it is in a lot of ways. However let's not be so quick to disrespect the people who fought to keep it a free country...or to help other countries to maintain their freedom.

So why don't you just choose a game where, in the end, the US looses and your country wins? Oh I know...because there aren't any such games....because nobody would want to play them...because, unlike you, there is still a majority of people who have a respect for the US. There are people who enjoy hearing a story how the US, although falling into a world of trouble, still end up getting through it in the end.

OR

Why don't you get off your mom's computer, go back to school (free in the US) and learn some grammar, then come back with a half-way logical argument as to why you don't like games unless they "take out the US government".

@Musharasur @AyatollaofRnR  True that is cross-gen but hopefully since it is being worked on by separate studios the next gen versions will be truly "next-gen" and not just a prettier version of the 360/ps3 versions

@smokeless_0225  With all respect, American soldiers are NOT the only ones giving their lives to protect people. ALL armies do that. It's just about which side of the fence you sit on. Stop acting as the god fathers of world politics dear Americans. Try to salvage some of that lost respect.

smokeless_0225

smokeless_0225
smokeless_0225

@starjay009

What is your argument? At what point did I say that American soldiers are the only ones giving their lives to protect people?

At no point did I have any intent on disrespecting any other country...but rather stand up against someone who sits behind a computer and wants to disrespect mine.

In many ways, the US government is corrupt, I won't argue with you there. However I'd like to hear about a country that has a free-standing government that isn't corrupt at all. I would even dare say that no such country exists. So what good would it do for a PMC that has a "oh-so-totally-uncorrupted" CEO to "take out the US government"? I was simply pointing out how horrible of a story ending that would be.
