Two more XBLA games to be 'Fable 2 compatible'

One month after unveiling Keystone, Peter Molyneux reveals two other titles--Mage Dice and Wizard's Tower--will let gamers stockpile in-game gold for the upcoming RPG.

At Microsoft's keynote at the 2008 Game Developers Conference, Lionhead head Peter Molyneux showed off his upcoming Xbox 360 role-playing game Fable 2. Besides showing how easy it is to make a game-altering mistake--like casually shooting your spouse, for example--the famed developer also showed of a new Xbox Live Arcade game, Keystone.

A pub game-inspired combination of craps and roulette, Keystone is notable for being the first XBLA title which will cross over into a full-fledged 360 title. In it, players will be able to win gold by gambling, and then transfer their winnings to their character in Fable 2, which will be released "several weeks" later.

Keystone's mechanic is especially important, since Molyneux explained at his own GDC keynote that, in Fable 2, currency would not be dropped when enemies are killed, as is typically the case in RPGs. Instead, players will have to earn cash by performing virtual jobs, such as working as a henchman for another player. Keystone will also allow them to further increase--or decrease--their earnings via gambling.

Today, Molyneux revealed on the Major Nelson podcast that two other "Fable 2-compatible" games--Wizard's Tower and Mage Dice (both working titles)--are being readied for XBLA. All three will be developed by Carbonated Games, maker of titles such as Uno, Hexic, and Texas Hold Em, and will feature similar gambling gameplay.

Molyneux told host Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, that crossover XBLA-360 play has been a pet project of his. He explained, "It's a really big thing of mine--why don't games talk to each other?" Scotching rumours that the game might be released sooner than anticipated, Molyneux told Hryb that the three XBLA games would be released in the summer, before Fable 2 hits stores.

He also added that everything in the game could be bought--including not only houses, but also dungeons and castles, which will unlock "a few little quests." If the player is rich enough to buy all the houses in a town, then the title of Mayor will be awarded. If a gamer buys all of the houses in a region, that player will be named King, and if he somehow manages to acquire all of the property in the whole of Albion's game world, then the position of Emperor awaits.

I'm going to earn loads on these arcade games, then spend it all on beer in game. Then got a job, and likely never become Emperor. A more realistic life right there.

I’ve been waiting for this game for sooo long now. All the new features just make me want it more. I love the idea of working for cash as apposed to completing quests.

the first sequel i played was at my cousins, they let me have a swing at it. an before i knew i was a fan in at least, i would say about 15 seconds maybe after that i was hooked, this game is without a doubt will be another hit, just like gears of war was, its either out of gears of War 2 and Fable 2 that is going to top the charts in the next few months, HOLLA!

Thats all good and well - but i'm looking for a singleplayer experience. hope the SP side of the game is not crippled or rife with nudges to "go online"... if there is an offline version at all this time. Am I in the wrong site? I keep seeing these dang UK articles! Where are the NA writers / articles at! (No offense to my UK brothers and sisters - i just want some NA specific writing). i could swear this is gamespot.com, not gamespot.uk!

Sounds like Animal Crossing, only with lots of violence (hopefully), and a far more harsh reality. Sounds great! Of course im probably way off the mark, seeing as ive never played either fable or animal crossing, but still this is shaping up to be one hell of an RPG.

they must take there time with fable 2 im sick of seeing bugged out games that have to be fixed with updates. when its ready ship it, its that simple. the hype of this game is already big and if it ships with almost no bugs or gameplay flaws then you can expect a great review and the cash will roll in bring new and great games from lionhead. keep up the great work over there!

This best be like the Project Ego we were all promised on the original box before Molyneux slapped the price tag on it, renamed it Fable, and apologized to us faithful fans (mind you after we had bought it) that it was not all that he hyped it up to be. Give me the RPG to end all RPGs like we were promised years ago.

Why not just package all of the games together. Selling them seperately at $5 a pop is too pricey. I'm all down for becoming rich before I even touch the game, but, one, I'm not going to let them rip me off with this, two, I don't wanna even bother with games that are more luck than skill, and three, I'm not sure if I see myself EVER comming back to one of the XBLA games once I have the real game. I REALLY hope that at least one of the games is more skill-based much like the pub games in the original Fable.

polsci1503

Will we have to pay for each XBLA game? If so that's $60 for the game and then, what... $5 for each XBLA add-on? Sounds pricey and smacks of gouging. If that's the case, I'll wait and play the pub games in-game.

you will properly get robed after 5 minutes of game play, little kid with wads of cash running around.... or be hated by everyone (rich snob)

cdo1536

centuryslayer, I was thinkin the same thing. I don't see the harm in humanoid targets having a small bit of cash or items to loot. Then again, its hard to knock somethin until you tried it. I am sure chests and stuff will still have cash or loot, so its not like you HAVE to work for some tarded little kid for an hour to earn some dough. Which brings me to a funny idea, can the henchmen KILL the employer? I wander what happens if the henchman massacres town folk and leaves... Do they towns people revive/repopulate, or do they take it out on the employing player?

Brainy142 "O come on what the point of killing mosters then" -Experience -Fun -Quest objectives -Purpose to the henchman job -Loot? They might not have loot since they have no cash... I doubt I will do much XBLA gambling, I like starting RPGs like this out poor, makes it seem funner having you work for everything. Maybe once I have earned a good bit of cash ingame ill try out the gambling to make getting king and emperor titles a little quicker. Unless you can gamble for special items/property/etc., I won't be gamblin right off the bat.

I don't know if this has been brought up or not. Since it is being developed by a studio outside of Lionhead, they can free up space and time that they would be otherwise wasted on these little games. These little $5 games could very well help them develop or include something new and/or wonderful with this extra time and space.

Yokuz1166

I agree. I'd rather wait years for a great game than play a decent game with a strong brand name that was made in 18 months. I can't wait to play this game, but I hope they make it longer than 10 hours. That should be one of their main targets to hit.

Everything about this game is so simple but revolutionary. Only because it is stuff that no one else has ever thought of. If more developers would take their time with games instead of releasing new "version" of their game every six months. Just wait a little while and add all of those features together into one game and gamers will appreciate it more. Respect is given to those who don't underestimate their gamers. That is what we want, new revolutionary ideas are what we are waiting for. It is the new generation of gaming, we need a new generation of game. Fable was one of my very favorite games ever. Along side Zelda and Mario. ( Nintendo for Life! ) I am so happy that Peter M. has taken what I loved about Fable and enhanced it for Fable 2. I can't wait to play this game, I think it will easily be one of my Top 5 games ever. Also, I don't think that Casual Gaming is becoming more popular, if anything I would say that the casual gamers of America are leaning more towards the competitive / fast-paced gaming of Japan.

centuryslayer
centuryslayer

I kinda like the idea but I will probably not get them unless they are fun in their own right ~~ Peter seem to have forgotten that RPG players like/LOVE to loot falle enemies for items and gold, yes that´s right, we like it! it´s nice to find a small amount of gold on an enemy, and even better when you manage to grab a larger amount of coin. sure it´s kinda wierd when wolves etc has gold on them, but bandits and creatures who might fancy themselves to gather riches should atleast have some gold on them ~~

I love how so many people who have commented have glossed over the fact that these minigames are being developed by an outside studio. You know, the kind that has employees. Employees that have salaries. Employees that expect the work they do to be compensated. There is no reason for these XBLA games to be free. It's just a nice perk that your success in the arcade games will be beneficial to you in Fable 2.

Ghost, you are 1000% right. I was gonna post just what you said and im glad someone beat me to it. I have always thought, since micro transactions were announced, that they were gonna get out of hand in a big big way. just look at EA sports charging for diff uniforms when that kinda of stuff was in the older games allready. With this new way to rape the consumer, we should suspect games to be missing simple content, just to have it sold to us later for a little more cash. Please remember folks, these are businesses and corparations before they are your fun loving gaming company that strives to please you. However, it is yours and my fault. We as a community will keep paying 5 dollars for horse armor and a diff color jerseys. So until we say NO, dont rape me anymore Game Developer by not buying anymore of the so called extra stuff. We'll just have to bend over and take it. "some one pass me the ky jelly, its starting to really hurt!"
