Tuesday: Getting Even in Blacklight: Retribution

Day two of our free-to-play extravaganza features a futuristic first-person shooter from developer Zombie Studios, Blacklight: Retribution. Now with extra plaid!

Urban warfare continues today with the free-to-play first-person shooter Blacklight: Retribution. In our demo, Jared Gerritzen, creative studio head at Zombie Studios, talks us through two of the game's multiplayer modes. The first is Net Warfare, which is a variant of capture the flag. In Net Warfare there is still a flag, as well as four neutral capture points that you can secure and bring the flag to for points--assuming the other team doesn't interfere. The second mode is Siege, which plays a bit like Team Fortress 2's Payload mode, only instead of controlling a tiny mine cart, one player gets to drive a giant spider robot. The future is just full of technological marvels, which you can see more of in the video below.

It's a decent F2P game, and it's graphics are outstanding. In terms of visuals way ahead of other F2P games and the vision mode is a neat hook. Whether it's got long term legs, I don't know but good fun for only a few gigs

I loved Tango Down, and I wish this was on PS3 and not just PC, I'd actually even be willing to pay if it was released on PS3.

Quality looking F2P? What is this madness? Also, this makes the saps paying for COD Elite look even dumber.

@bat4uo yeah they should not try to make money..... if a developer is going to spend two years making a game, they are gonna need to make some money. how about you respect the developers and buy things so they can feed their families. double standard. Yeah it's free to play, but obviously the point of all their hard work on the game is to continue to have the funds to play games, and obviously a part of that comes from the smaller things you pay for in the game. it is a business afterall, i assume you work fulltime for a volunteer organization

I'm disappointed they didn't decide to bring the free one to PSN. I played a little of Blacklight Tango down it was pretty cool now they come out with a sequel thats free and they don't even bring it to PSN. Sux but oh well what ya gonna do.

Whoa, if you seen the gameplay demo, he said that the map was like Eye of The Storm form World of Warcraft! What a nerd... jokes.

I had to use the torrent download, because their servers are missing packets and not replacing them (for the direct download link). So myself, and many others are getting corrupt file errors on install. Anyways, after multiple redownloads, the torrent link worked.

My props to this developer for actually acknowledging that they take their ideas from other sources, instead of acting like the ideas they use are completely original.

UT3 Black - I love doing sp on there- offline or online, AI team mates, large map varieties, many gameplay modes, (dm, t-dm, greed, ctf, v-ctf, and others- all played as sp with ai- good if you only want to play with friends and they're not available or travel a lot and end up offline). Even has a sp campaign in a tournament game that's mostly mp. Me and my friends all have over 200 hours in sp alone and only dl'd the game off Steam less than 2 years ago. Cater to sp and mp and everyone's happy. Everyone's happy = more$$. :)

@Tidal_Abyss - Agreed, I'd be all over this (or the 1st one) if there was sp.

1st stretched the truth on sp, this one- no (offline) sp whatsoever, so,..... next...

I strongly suggest playing this game if you're a fan of any FPS. A lot of people are complaining about server lag, but I've only experienced that in about 5% of the games I've played.

@100proofsoco I agree, they definitively need to fix the lag. ...and since there are some bloody moronic PC fanboys giving us thumbs down, I'll be more accurate : fix the SERVER lag, not framerate.

I'm... somewhat confused. Is this related to the Prototype? Anyway, looks bloody awesome....

PC gamers have nothing to fear. They really went all out with the features. direct x 11, FOV slider, a lot of graphics options, different sensitivity for hip-shooting and scope shooting is a good one. customisable cross hairs and fully rebindable keys and hotkeys for weapons, gear and grenades. it's just awesome

it's good but server performace is a bit bad sometimes

will look into this one,but i have kinda noticed that this year is like the year of f2p shooters

I'm a little skeptical about this game just because the PC version of Blacklight Tango Down was just so bad. PC gamers, a good F2P FPS game is Tribes Ascend, it's in beta but my god is it fun.

I played the beta, it was actually decent. Fix the lag and I'm in.
