Tuesday: Crime and Car Chases in Sub Rosa

Developer Alex Austin lays down the basics of Sub Rosa: a dynamic, high-stakes crime game where deceit and betrayal are constant companions.

by

Sub Rosa is a game of crime, betrayal, and high-speed car chases. One team has a special disk; the other has cash to exchange for that disk. In a perfect world, the two sides would meet, exchange, and be on their merry way--but things rarely work out so neatly. Sometimes greed takes hold, and other times a third team shows up looking to collect both items. Ultimately, it's a setup that can lead to some desperate (and hilarious) chases, such as the one in the demo with creator Alex Austin below:

After playing this game for many months, I can clearly say that I love this game. I too am yet to play this new update, however I have been an avid follower of the old versions. The majority of the time I will play this with a group of friends, this increases the enjoyment massively. I love how this game creates fear and excitement from little game mechanics, I too like Qushion also find myself screaming at my monitor and spurting out orders at my team.

I simply love this game and it's mechanics, this game is a clear example of why you don't need good graphics to make a good game, as long as you have good mechanics, your game can be great. Crypticsea has done a brilliant job with this game and I wish that he will continue developing this marvelous project.

Once again, a brilliant game showing the potential of small indie games. I would truly suggest that you go to the Cyrpticsea website and you download the game. Come and join in the fun and meet this amazing small community. And look out for that Sid kid, it's not me, but he is rather good!

Haven't played this version, but the older one, which doesn't include AI vehicles or lots of buildings, is absolutely brilliant.

The mechanics give you so much tension whilst trying to make a deal and so much more of an adrenaline rush when everything goes inevitably wrong. I regularly find myself screaming at my comrades who can't actually here me, which I thinks a good indication of a fun game. Google crypticsea and download it, its free and literally less than 3MB.

Yawn. Game is terrible. Why are all the buildings made of glass on every floor? Where is the details in this game. This is like a poor mans Minecraft. Looks like a very bad Atari 2600 game. Wouldn't waste a cent on this garbage.

@blackace

Atari 2600.... Did you even own one? Because if you did you would know that this statement is entirely incorrect. Don't make up lies about things that you don't know about.

Poor Mans Minecraft... I'm sorry, I don't see any creepers in Sub Rosa, or any Zombies, or any Coal, what Minecraft have you been playing?

And you wouldn't waste a cent on this game? This game is worth more than a cent! However Cryptic is a nice guy who only cares about the game not the money, therefore he isn't charging for the game. Anyway, I'm sure that many people would pay for this game!

@blackace Game is great.

Buildings are made like that because there only one guy making it, and so cars can crash through them (I dearly hope crypticsea).

 No time in game to be looking at details, too busy doing awesome stuff.

You can neither mine nor craft.

Gonna ignore Atari 2600 comment as I've never played on one.

Don't have to waste a cent because (at the moment) its FREEEEEE!

Yes, I watched the whole video. Don't care if it was made in 7 days. It still looks like crap. You're the dumbass for posting a comment that had nothing to do with my statement. My opinion stands. I'll see if the game improves over time or not.

Yes, I've own one. I've been playing games before the Atari 2600 was released. I know more about games then you ever will. Trust me on that. Sub Rosa looks like crap. Whether it was made in 7 days or 7 weeks. It looks very repetitive and boring to me. My reference to Minecraft is with the graphics and the blocky heads, buildings and cars. No, I wouldn't waste a cent or my time playing this crap. I have nothing against the guy making the game. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but I just don't care for the game he has made in it's current state. That's my opinion. Don't really care if anyone likes it or not.

@blackace The point that he was making was, that the game isn't going to be perfect since it was made in seven days. I bet if you made a game in seven days it would be terrible. Seven days isn't very long to make a game and looking at what he has accomplished, he has done very well.

@blackace I personally disagree about you knowing more about video games than I, however there is no real way to challenge this fact on the internet, so if I where to fight you about that, it would end up in the same way as two five year old's in a sand pit...

Sub Rosa doesn't look like crap, it has a unique style of graphics. People like you forget that video games are not about the graphics, video games are about the gameplay, the story and it take you on, and the enjoyment that you get out of them, graphics are used to aid these factors, it isn't a factor on whether you would play a game or not.

Repetition is one of the key enjoyment factors in this game. Usually you will be playing with the same people for a few hours at a time, after a few games you learn how the other teams play (the repetition) and you try and change your tactics to allow you to win, however suddenly they will change their tactics and everything will go crazy once again, the repetition that is present helps the game in many ways.

Finally like qushion, I don't really care about your opinion since you have no real explanation behind it making it worthless. I'm just protecting a game that I love and reading your comments with no validity.

@blackace If your Minecraft comment was purely about graphical quality, then the entirety of your original comment was about graphical quality also, isn't it?

This makes you sound like a 13 year old, someone who has been playing games since the 70's should have probably realized by this point that a game doesn't always always always have to have state of the art graphics to be enjoyable.

You have made one good point though, it is very repetitive, this is quite true of the current version, but it really doesn't take away from the experience you get from the game. Imagine for example surfing, repetitive, but you still get the exhilaration every time. I would urge you to give it a chance, as I have said the games free and less than 3MB.

Finally if you don't care about others views on your opinions, don't share them. I sure as hell don't want to read them. (I'm lying I do, I enjoy telling you your wrong.)
