Tropico 5 preorder figures four times better than Tropico 4

Kalypso also says preorders on Steam are performing ahead of expectation; game launches May 23 first on PC.

by

Ahead of Tropico 5's release on Friday, publisher Kalypso announced today that the PC version is setting records for the company. The game has netted four times the number of preorders than predecessor Tropico 4 (2011), the company says. Specific preorder figures for Tropico 5 were not disclosed.

Kalypso also points out that Tropico 5 has sat atop the Amazon pre-sale charts for "many weeks" and that preorders on Steam are performing ahead of expectation.

The digital version of Tropico 5 for PC launches May 23, with a retail version to follow on June 3. Xbox 360 and Mac versions are scheduled to release this summer, while a PlayStation 4 version will be available this fall. There's no mention of an Xbox One version.

Tropico 5, developed by Haemimont Games, takes players on a journey from the 19th century to the 21st. You'll play through colonial times, World War 1 and World War 2, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and up to modern times and beyond. The game also introduces a series-first multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to build their own cities, and then decide if they want to share resources and supplies or go to war with one another.

Shows how many people are ditching Sim City forever after the debacle.

I'm looking forward to the game, but Penultimo has a different voice now which is a bit of a shame, I really liked the old Penultimo better.

Also, I'm going to wait until after release to check whether I can disable their extra "phone home" Kalypso launcher or not and until it's more clear where they're going with addons / DLC.

If they overdo it I'll just wait for the complete pack in a year or so.

I just binged on Tropico 4 a few weeks back so I'm going to hold off for a few patches but, unless something awful happens, I'll be getting the game for sure.

Looking forward to the Xbox release. Different change of pace from most of the games I play, but very enjoyable....and the music is infectious!

I've been a fan of this series for years since I played the very first one. I hope this is as good as they say it is. I think I'll go ahead and pre-order lol.

Because Tropico 4 was Tropico 3 with a few new features.  Literally.  Anyone who played 3 could see that immediately and passed on it.

4 times better than Tropico 4? So Tropico 5 is actually Tropico 4^2.

Never played a tropico game, but I will definitely start at 5.

Preordering a game, especially a digital one, is basically telling the publisher that you will be buying this game regardless if it sucks or not. I can see preordering a collectors edition, but a preorder for a standard edition makes no sense.

???

I don't see them anywhere on that list.

Never played a tropico game before but One of the features that stood out to me was the ability to kill anyone in your population at a whim, that a bad thing lol ?

tropico 3 was tropico HD, and tropico 4 was tropico 3 with some five new buildings. this is the first time they're actually making a new game, and I'm really excited :)

@ggregd I hope they were smart enough to come back when Modern Times showed up.

@RossRichard  I kind of agree with you. I stay away from buying games until i have read at least a few reactions after the release. But for people who buy it as soon as it launches anyway i guess it makes sense, as they usually have a 10% discount on pre-ordered steam games.

For the publishers pre-ordering is great of course so the discount is probably seen as good business

@RossRichard  Especially pre-ordering a digital download.  Beyond stupid unless you're getting a discount.

@RossRichard  I don't understand pre-ordering as it exists today.  The concept revolves around a perceived lack of supply, but I've never seen an example of this phenomenon in games.  GTA V was the fastest selling game in history, but you could still go out to any store and pick up a copy on release day.  In my opinion, unless you are receiving some kind of discount $5/$10 off of the list price, there's no reason to pre-order.  If you can wait for a game, in six month or so it will list for $40 and in about a year it'll be around $20.

@liquidbutter  I found it at #6 in PC Download pre-orders.  Not sure about their definition of "atop."

@steaminpotatoes

Not if it secures El Presidente's position! Penultimo will surely praise your insight when you 'disappear' a leader of the opposition.

@PETERAKO  That won't really affect the people who pre-order games though will it? It will just make the rest of us have to wait a few months after launch before buying it. Sooner or later they are bound to make a "best game ever"-edition at 50% discount including all the DLC crap

Hayasmez

@PETERAKO  I don't get it, its not like the game is going to go anywhere or keys are going to run out if its digital.

@ggregd @RossRichard A lot of steam pre-order games do along with other bonuses. Tropico 5 for instance was 10% off for everyone and with enough pre-orders: a free copy of tropico 4, first DLC free, a free copy of omerta.

@Suaron_x @RossRichard Not everywhere!  I wasn't planning on buying GTA V, but I went out and got my haircut the day it released.  While getting my haircut I just had the urge to go and get it so afterwards I walked across the street to wal-mart and they were sold out.  But the gamestop in the same shopping center had a line of about 20 people.  So I went over there and got it.  They only had about 1000 copies of it.

RossRichard

@Suaron_x @RossRichardBack in the day I preordered a WoW collectors edition, and that went up to $8k at one point. So I can see preordering a CE. Other than that, preordering is a scam.
