Tropico 5 launching May 23 on PC, comes to PS4 this fall

Kalypso Media announces release date for upcoming city-building game.

City-building simulator game Tropico 5 will launch globally for PC on May 23, publisher Kalypso Media announced today. The physical version will be available in the U.S. on May 27.

The Xbox 360 and Mac versions of Tropico 5 will release this summer, while the PlayStation 4 iteration is scheduled to launch sometime this fall. In addition, Kalypso is working on a an "extensive" Steam OS version of Tropico 5 that is scheduled to launch with Valve's Steam Machines sometime later in 2014.

Tropico 5 has not been announced for Xbox One.

In addition to advanced trading mechanics, scientific research trees, and island exploration, Tropico 5 will be the first game in the series to include cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players.

The game, developed by Haemimont Studios, puts you in the role of El Presidente, the dictator of a fictional banana republic named Tropico. It plays much like other construction and management sims, but allows you to rule with an iron fist by committing electoral fraud, instating martial law, and other corrupt activities.

Well crap, My wife hates sony but I don't want a last gen system playing a next gen game so I guess she will buy her own or play it on the ps4.

Finally a game that should make good use of the ps4 track pad.

They should start to make games fell more as they title say and less serious about that, I hope this release will fell more tropical and less serious.

I like the Tropico games, and love the music (so uplifting).  Hopefully this one turns out well.

"Tropico 5 has not been announced for Xbox One." Of course, its a weak piece of shit.

Is this series any good?... Never tried before. Used to play the old Sim City games years ago. Not the new Sim City... that launch was an abomination.

That Pic reminds me of Dead Island. I like Deal Island but that's my opinion.

I'll try this game out.

Another victory for Sony

What is this game like, never played any of the past ones?  More like AoE, SimCity, or something completely different?

I just hope they keep the voice of Penultimo from Tropico 4.... best(worst) advisor ever :D

@holidaysins  Nope sorry. LOL hey this may make you feel better or worry more. On gamestop they have the ps4 version at $59.99 and the PC version at $39.99 then they have the xbox 360 version listed for $39.99 as well. So how watered down will the 360's version be?

PC     = 06/03/14

ps4    = 10/07/14

x360  = 06/27/14

@Boddicker  Good choice for a 1st ps4 game, mine was BF 4 and just about made me return it. If I hadn't bought BF 4 for the xbone and seen it wasn't the system

to clear up why I bought it for both for those of you that don't understand. I do not let forms, hype, sales numbers, or GameSpot decide which system has better (add what ever your want here). I play the same game on both and pick which system I buy all my multi-system games on and just buy ONLY games on the other. Just as oblivion did for my ps3/360. Oh and nintendo is just a given buy for zelda games.

@Gallowhand  with more than three tracks of music I hope. still 4 is a great game.

@Random_Matt  Yeah so they release it on the 360, which is even an weaker system. I see intelligence is not one of your strong points. You do realize you only make yourself look like an idiot every time you post something?

@GSGuy321  It's not a city builder, Tropico a strategy game. You should play it with keyboard and mouse like any other strategy game, that is not dumbed down for consoles/gamepads. Don't be afraid of your desk/table. Mouse is most comfortable here.

@GSGuy321 It's waaaaaaaaaay better than Sim City. Then again, I can't stand Sim City. Can't understand why it's so popular either. The way it works just feels like the worst way of making a city builder to me. I like builders where you actually choose what buildings go where rather than a tile painting simulator.

@GSGuy321  its a fun series. I liked 4 a lot. ive never played sim city, so cant give you a comparison.

@khuzko It's on PC in May, XBox and Mac in the summer, and PS4 in the fall.... this is a victory?

lolo1976
lolo1976

@Tigerbite2 P.S. It's also more challenging than other strategy-type games I've played, and has more re-playability. I tend to win and/or become bored with games very quickly, so this is one of the few that's kept my interest longer than a month.

lolo1976

@Tigerbite2 I've never played AoE, but it's nothing like Sim City (other than the building aspect). It's more of a mission-based strategy game, with a sense of humor and beautiful "scenery" to boot.

I've been playing the series forever, probably since the first one came out, and each one is better than the last... Tropico 4 is almost always running on my laptop, and the go-to game whenever I'm bored. Soooo excited for Tropico 5, and would recommend you play some #4 in the meantime! Worth every penny, imo.

Zloth2
Zloth2

@M4yka I'm a little worried about that, actually.  In Trop 5 you actually play through generations and your ruler has to be replaced by his children.  I wonder if Penultimo Jr. will be as adoring?

@Horndawgie This guy is a total troll. Every time I come on this website he is always bashing the XB1. And trying to tell a moron that they have no intelligence is a losing battle my friend because you see this idiot does not have the intelligence to comprehend that he is not intelligent. Best to just ignore and move on.

GSGuy321

I'm waiting for the Steam controller to try these types of games. I game in the living room with a Xbox360 gamepad, but these strategy games require something more. Not a keyboard though, to awkward in living room imo. Your thoughts ?

Oh go away. All I did was express my opinion on wanting to play this on my x1

@Zloth2 @khuzko  Well I think he means for next gen PS vs Xbox since no one counts PC in the running.

@Zloth2 @M4yka  I'm just worried it will have the same three songs as tropico 4 has.

You should get tropico 4. Basically the same as 3 with some additions so dont waste money on 3 or the franchise. Game is a lot of fun. You will be surprised. Good campaigns with a lot of funny pop up choices/events. This will not be played well with a controller though. Use a wireless keyboard and an adjustable breakfast table and your set to game on the sofa. Pcgamer magazine was not very impressed with the steam controller when they tested it. Ive signed up for the beta but heard nothing this far.

@deadpen @Zloth2@M4yka There's more than three!  But not enough more, I agree.  I have to turn the music off after about an hour because the music repeats so much.
