Traveller's Tales acquires Embryonic

Lego Star Wars developer expands its empire by buying studio for an undisclosed sum.

by

Business advisers Farleys Solicitors and Cowgill Holloway have announced that they have advised UK-based Traveller's Tales on the acquisition of fellow British studio Embryonic for an undisclosed sum. While Traveller's Tales and Embryonic have yet to make a formal announcement on the deal, the Embryonic Web site confirms the deal by saying it is "a wholly owned subsidiary of Traveller's Tales."

TT is best known for its Lego Star Wars games, most recently the successful Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. The developer also recently worked on Bionicle Heroes and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Embryonic was founded in 2005 by Nick Elms, one of the former founders of Warthog PLC and Digital Anvil. The company currently employs 20 people at its Bollington, Cheshire, offices. Members of Embryonic have helped produce games including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Star Trek: Invasion, and Battlestar Galactica.

Traveller's Tales was formed in 1989 by Jon Burton and employs 120 people in its offices in Knutsford, which is also in Cheshire. The company is part of the TT Games group and has worked on titles including Toy Story, Sonic 3D, and Crash Bandicoot.

The LEGO Star Wars game ruled! I'd say make more LEGO games. A LEGO Spider-Man game would be cool. And it would be even cooler if it was a free raoming game like SM2. Or a LEGO universe game. Kinda like LEGO Island but you create your own charicter and go all around teh LEGO universe! that's would rock! Keep making those tight games, TT!

May not have heard of these people, but I have a feeling they are more likely to be the future than the big guys, at least in PC gaming!

What about Brave Fencer Musashi? They worked on that, I know. But I think Square Soft owns it.

I don`t know where, but I think I`ve heard of Embryonic before. In any case, I hope this leads to more great games.

I'll never forget Travelers Tale's Aero the Acro-Bat for the SNES. That, Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong Country and BattleToads where all games I grew up on. Ahh the good ol days where so many games were memorable. Now only so many games reach that plateau.

The only game I've really played from them is the Lego Star Wars Series.
