Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark confirmed, merges with Michael Bay's Age of Extinction

War for Cybertron developer High Moon is not developing the next Transformers game.

by

Activision and Hasbro have officially announced the game we reported on earlier in the week, Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark.

An Activision representative announced and shared some details about the game at a Hasbro preview event for the New York Toy Fair. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will merge the universe created by High Moon Studios in the previous Cybertron games with the universe director Michael Bay created in the Transformers movies, according to examiner.com.

As with the Cybertron games, you'll be able to play as both Autobots and Decepticons. One announced new playable character is Grimlock, from Bay's upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction movie.

High Moon will not be developing Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. Instead, developer Edge of Reality, which just released Loadout, will take over.

The game will release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PC, Wii U and 3DS this year.

IGN has the trailer that was shown at the event.

High Moon made two awesome Transformers games and I would love another game from them set in the G1 lore of old. This game TF TDS on the other hand..... is blasphemy !

"High Moon will not be developing"

That's all I needed to know.  Now I can forget all about this game.

I really like the two Cybertron games good gameplay, good story, GOOD CHARACTER DESIGN (I really dislike how they look in the movies) and the build your own bot thing in the multiplayer was fun : )

So please, for Prime's sake, someone stop that from combining with the movie stuff and prevent that fan-loved franchise from transforming into a horrible movie cash-in. Im sure the new developer has good intentions and their last work (Loadout) was pretty good (just not my taste) but it will end up like hundreds of other horrible movie tie-ins.

"the universe director Michael Bay created in the Transformers movies" What with the amount of explosions in Michael Bay's movies, the universe he created simply must have begun with a Big Bang.

Ssweet!

Another CRAPTACULAR 2 hour commercial with explosions!

why don't they stick with the comics and the 1980 series? that's how this should be; not some movie based idea.

High Moon did a great job on the Transformers games. Now we are merging with the horrible Movieverse? God no.I won't buy that.

On topic, what better way there is to get people buy a rushed movie game? Merge it with the successful series. -_-

Sorry, but I have no faith in this mixed universe. High Moon did a good job with transformers, and I will save my money for the next transformers game that worth buying.

Damn, would sure feel better if High Moon did it. I guess Activision is still mad about Deadpool.

In other words, it's going to suck.

This is just so disappointing on so many levels.

Well, this series is now dead. Couldn't have a stand alone transformers game, no we have to try and suck as much money as possible and merge a very decent transformers game with a very weak movie franchise which quite honestly, I don't consider anywhere near cannon. Oh well, I got the other two games to enjoy.

Not a High Moon game? Pass.

Don't expect a good non-CoD game from Activision when you can't expect a good CoD game from them.

I believe Michael Bay is a punishment from god. When transformer fans stop living such sinful wicked lives he will fade away.

Yeah they completely lost me as a customer after not giving this game to be made by High Moon.

Too bad..it was good while it lasted.

Everything about this announcement is terrible news.  Dumping a good developer?  Rushing a game out to tie in with a terrible movie?  Trying to merge continuity with the terrible "storylines" of the movies?  And the title?  "Rise of the Dark Spark"?  Seriously?  How hackneyed can they get?  Why is everything in every game/movie these days "rising" and "dark"?  Are there "knights" in this game too?  Will there maybe be a cameo by Doctor Raven Darktalon Blood?

Ugh.  I once loved you so, so much, Transformers.  Now I just want to see the whole franchise put out of its misery.  Or at least my misery.

So, this series went from G1 continuity in the first game, to Prime continuity in the second game, to blatant retcon into the Movieverse continuity.  One of the worst cases of retconning I've ever seen.  There has to be a reason for this, but somehow, I don't think the guys at Hasbro are of sound mind if they keep green-lighting all of these huge changes.

Wow...as if its not enough that the title is pretty bad, they will also merge (and without a doubt ruin) the fantastic cybertron series with this movie crap. I just saw the trailer and the part from the cybertron series looks good as always, but the other part doesnt look so great to me. I still got a little excited about this whole 2 worlds thing, but I really dont know if it will be any good.

@madkingdom  The previous games by High Moon were REALLY good though. I'd like to see more of them... just not like this. Please god, not like this...

@sgtnichols Yeah, I used to love watching the 1980's series, the franchise at its (Optimus) Prime.

@PixelAddict High Moon? Sure. Dark Side of the Moon? No way, that movie was bad.

@nparks  I know the feeling, it took decades until something good, video game wise finally came for this franchise, and that was Cybertron series (both War and Fall).

I hate the excessive human involvement in the past movie-tie games (picking up the kid from school?????). I DON'T WANT TO PLAY A HUMAN / MILITARY game where there are a few transformers, I WANT TO PLAY A TRANSFORMERS GAME WHERE THERE ARE SOME FORGETTABLE HUMANS (if on Earth, none of mankind on other systems/planets).

I also don't care for the complicated hard to read transformers models from the Michael Bay movies, I prefer the cleaner and awesome looks from the Cybertron Series. I don't mind the complicated transformations where pieces go everywhere (the one thing the movie seem to get right), but I do want better looking transformers, that look solid, not like the will break and dent with each punch, heck, they USED TO CRACK! They are made of something more robust than our cars. Gosh, I understand I am venting but this is ridiculous. They finally got something right and beautiful, if this games looks like anything from the transformers from the movies (and they will). I shall pass, I prefer the direction for the cybertron series and where it was heading (nothing to do with the movies, I was actually excited to see that trend moving to Earth, but now I am not).

I know a lot of the blame is going to Michael Bay and it should because of involving too much human problems and emotions in it, but Hasbro is the one I blame the most, it is because of them my franchise lies in ruins now, it was them that gave Optimus Prime that cursed mouth (so much cooler with the "wisdom behind the helmet"). Beast Wars show already had a mouth in Optimus Primal, the idea was there long before the movies, Michael just trashed showing that our military could somehow be a match to superior transformers firepower and technology. I wished Michael Bay just when on to shot a Call of Duty/Battlefield movie (so much more fitting for him) and leave Transformers and Ninja Turtles alone.

I will sorely miss you Transformers, my childhood was awesome because of you and High Moon provided a Spark of hope that it could recover, I now must put you down like a dog that bit his master's hand.

@MegaPyroFlame  The trilogy has grossed more than $3 billion globally and generated $1.6 billion in merchandise revenue for the company. Last year, Transformer sales reached $483 million—almost 16 times 2005’s haul.

so rightly or wrongly it's making them buckets of money so i don;t think they care that much.

@MegaPyroFlame  There it is, a comment from someone seeing the source of the problem! I agree!

@Hurvl @sgtnicholsThe first two High Moon games were pretty much exactly that -- absolute love for the original material.  This one clearly will not be, which is clearly why High Moon is stepping out.  The LICENSE dictated the game (like how crap usually happens), obviously/unfortunately...
