Toy Golf E3 2005 Hands-On Report

Micro Machines meets minigolf in this teeny Gizmondo golfer.

Toy Golf is a cute little minigolfer for the brand-new Gizmondo portable. This isn't the Gizmondo title that has the best chance of revolutionizing handheld games--Agaju probably takes that prize--but this looks like a solid, unpretentious game that will appeal to a more-casual audience than many of the other Gizmondo launch titles.

Toy Golf's courses are contained entirely within a single house. The different environments, like a kitchen table and a bathroom counter, are blown up to a giant size (or your ball is reduced to a speck, if you'd like to think about it that way), with a hole located at the other end of a field, which is filled with obstacles like pencils, forks, and so forth. You've got a limited number of shots to make par. That's pretty much it. The golfer and putter aren't even shown onscreen--just your ball and a meter that lets you gauge how hard you're hitting the ball.

That's OK, though, because this is a simple one-button game. The main attraction are really the environments, which are actually quite inventive. For instance, we played on a tabletop that seemed as though it had been the subject of a messy dinner. There were plates and silverware everywhere, blocking our access to the hole. We had to negotiate our way around a cup very carefully, lest we fall off the table and roll under a nearby cabinet and get a one-stroke penalty.

Toy Golf will be released in the US at the same time as the Gizmondo itself, which will be sometime before the end of this year. We'll get you the review as soon as we can.
