Total War: Rome II players get early beta access to Arena

Those who pick up a copy of September's strategy game will score "advanced beta access" to upcoming free-to-play MOBA.

by

Total War: Rome II players will receive early access to a beta for upcoming free-to-play MOBA Total War: Arena, developer Creative Assembly announced today.

Not only that, but players who purchase Total War: Rome II will have access to "exclusive in-game Legion Armory bonuses" and $15 worth of in-game currency for Arena.

These players will also earn "Legion" status for the free-to-play game, though specific benefits were not mentioned.

Total War: Arena is Creative Assembly's first free-to-play game. It was announced during GDC this year in March. No release date for the game--or its beta--has been announced.

Total War: Rome II will be released on September 3.

Its good that they make the game more historically accurate this time.

The Roman army didnt actually make much use of archers.  They had 'Velites' (spear throwers) and Slingers.

So there will be no archers this time.. At least not in the Roman Factions. Also there will be no Arcani, Samnite Gladiators, Dogs, and Burning Pigs (those pigs were used in the original Rome to scare off Elephants).

look at this game.....

JUST look at it....

I can't believe it when I read console only gamers say PC gaming is sht , how unbelievably in denial these people are. Seriously.

Look at this game, its amazing. Last of Us game of the year? whatever.

So I'm thinking of being Sparta and aim to reunify the Greek States, from their I will secure Macedon. I'm undecided on after that. I hope controlling the Mediterranean is as important as it is in the original.

consider this I have played, online free to play stergey games and have Always found the balance lopsided. Archers in a good defencive position should be nearly invincible ask the medievil french nights that where slaughtered at crecy ajincourt and many other battles in the hundred years war. If CC gives that kinde of realistic balance in troop strengths I might give it a go.

I'll pay them 15$ to stop making MOBA and rather focus on Total War.

How about releasing the MP beta patch for Empire Total War campaign instead? People actually care about that; why they don't just release the MP mode properly I don't understand. People want it!

ANOTHER MOBA? Those guys must be retards, MOBAS are like MMOs, everyone just flock to the most popular.

Well, on the other hand, unlike MMOS they are probably dirt cheap to make.

God, I forgot they were making a mobo... Too bad I really don't like that genre at all.

As if anyone is going to STOP playing Rome II for enough time to try out another game.  What idiots.

Eating and sleeping are the only other things I MIGHT have time to do starting September 3rd.

Why couldn't they give us early beta access to something better than a MOBA? I literally just pre-ordered Rome Total War 2 just a few hours ago!

... oh well, I guess I'll give this beta a try since it's in the Total War universe and they are giving us free in-game currency.

@brainiac1988 What do you mean with "So there will be no archers this time.."? Even thou CA want's to make the game as historical as possible i'm pretty sure people would get mad at CA for not having any archers in the Roman Army. If what you're saying is true, then link me the source.

@brainiac1988 No DOGS? O.O

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Also, I wanted to hear those pigs squeal!? Damn it!

-_- Now I'm starting to have second thoughts about this whole thing...

(BTW, who were the Arcani and the Samnite Gladiators? I don't remember ever seeing them?)

@Eza08 Just build up a powerful economic Greek state and take control of southern Italy well your at it.

That way they can't screw up the value of the euro so bad in the future....

@bsmith12 Obviously can't speak for Rome 2, but in the original, I held a castle (admittedly with epic stone walls) against a full stack with 3 units of archers.

@TalesOfGod As you can see in the link:

Praetorion Cohorts and Urban Cohorts were also used very little in actual wars.

Praetorian Cohorts were personal bodyguards of the Emperor. Urban Cohorts were kind of a Police Force in cities.

In the original Rome Total War I always went to battle with a whole army of Urban Cohorts:P

They were the best infantry units in the game and they also looked the best. They wore that typical Roman armor and helmet that we all know..

Seeing thousands of them march was awesome.

@TalesOfGod

Samnite Gladiators and Arcani were both elite Roman units in the original RTW. (smaller numbers, special abilities).

Each Roman faction had a gladiator unit.    When you played the Julii faction they were called 'Samnite Gladiators'.

They had little armor, but they were extremely good fighters.  I believe they always fought till death.  I remember their unit description was something like: "Their goal is not to live, but to die in an entertaining way"

Arcani were also good fighters, also little armor.  Equipped with dark hoods and scary masks and daggers.. Kind of like ninja's. They had a war-cry ability that could scare enemies away.

(its possible that some units were removed in later patches, I dont know)

Here's the link to a unit overview from the original RTW:

PS: Dont worry. this game will be awesome!

@Shanks_D_Chop @nyran125tk There is a difference, being a Rome Total War fanboy, is actually cool. Being a Playstation fanboy is a weird cult following, like being Emo was.

@reincarnator07 @bsmith12 I've done the same in Medieval II. I think most of the enemy forces were cavalry and they only had one ram. Flaming arrows did the job pretty fast. When the ram was gone all the cavalry was useless.

OldKye
OldKye

@Leivve @Ultramarinus So what your saying is they could make more total war games faster but their not?

I'll pay $15 too.

OldKye
OldKye

@brainiac1988 I think every game could benefit from "Incendiary Pigs".

Halo, Assassin's Creed, (I'd say COD but they would really add them if I did so I can't), Dark Souls, Watch Dogs....  Just think about it when your high tech phone hacking fails you can still scare off their elephants with flaming pigs.

"Obviously, the pigs did not survive for very long after being set on fire..."

@Shanks_D_Chop @loneygod @nyran125tk Didn't care much for The Last Of Us not that it was bad but hardly game of the year or even close.

That said based on sales a Total war will never be game of the Year and Last Of Us has a pretty good chance.

Sadly more sold equals more praise as people don't like to say something they spent $60 isn't very good to the point that they will defend bad games.

@Shanks_D_Chop @loneygod @nyran125tk Game of the year requires comparing all games... so whether they're completely different or not doesn't matter. Game of the year is across all genres. Your argument is pointless.

Shanks_D_Chop
Shanks_D_Chop

@loneygod @Shanks_D_Chop @nyran125tk I think it's partly subjective, I've yet to play either but I can safely say that they're both very different and thus comparison is irrelevant.

I think I can also safely assume, from the performance record of the respective developers, that both games are/will be of high quality.

@reincarnator07 @Shanks_D_Chop @nyran125tk Im talking sht. I was joking. I didn't realise people would take it so seriously. People on the internet, are so serious.

OldKye

@Leivve @OldKye @Ultramarinus So your saying they need to consolidate their studios to just one and focus solely on making total war games?

Fine I'll go up to $20 you drive a hard bargain.

Leivve
Leivve

@OldKye @Leivve @Ultramarinus Technically they could, but their studio in Jolly old England is the 'game making' studio, the second handles run off, and other side projects.

@Winterstreet @Vidpci He is not wrong. Look at Planetside 2 as the most recent example. They monetized the resources needed to by vehicles in that game by selling "resource boosts" then proceeded to increase the cost of vehicles to a point where you need those boosts to stay competitive. Weapons took far to long to acquire  without using money, and when you did unlock them they had already been nerfed and a new and better choice was for sale... MOBAS however, have a long history of only selling cosmetic items, so his concern is unfounded.
