Total War developer to make Warhammer games

Creative Assembly partners with Games Workshop on multi-title Warhammer deal; first game due out "from beyond 2013."

by

Total War developer Creative Assembly will soon be making games based on the fantasy Warhammer universe, publisher Sega has announced. The first unnamed Warhammer title in the deal is scheduled to launch "from beyond 2013."

The deal signed with Warhammer creator Games Workshop is described as "multi-title," suggesting that more than one game may be in the works. According to Eurogamer, the deal does not include the Warhammer 40,000 license, which still belongs to publisher THQ.

New developer Creative Assembly is currently working on Total War: Rome 2 and an as-yet-unannounced game based on the Alien universe.

The last Warhammer title released was this year's Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, a multiplayer online battle arena game from EA.

Ooh. Can imagine it. Empire, Kislev, Dwarves, Ulthuan, Nagarroth, Slayers, Chaos Wastes ALL ON TOTAL WAR DETAILED MAPS. Awesome. If they combine the Total War attention to detail and traits with the Warhammer mysteries, unlockables and legends it would be so cool; like if you send your family members to the chaos wastes, they get a 50% probability of getting the trait "Mutation" or if you send them to the dwarves there'd be a chance of getting the trait "Stubborn, gold fever or dwarf friend"....can't wait...

YES they should have been the one making the game all along.  The fantasy game works better with total war anyway.

Now if we can get the new owners of home world to make a battle fleet gothic game things will be complete

No 40k? Damn... Still, Warhammer Fantasy is a good universe so hopefully Creative Assembly can do something good with it. I'm personally hoping for "Total Warhammer". ;)

Hope they will implement toughness and strength in the game then. It would give TW greater depth then ever before. Should also redo the armour accourdingly.

A goblin shouldn't have the same chance to pass through a knight in plate-armour as a Black Orc with a double handed axe.  Hope they fix such things.

Total War: Warhammer? I could poop rainbows if that happened. I've always thought it would be AWESOME to have a fantasy version of total war..and they both are British Companies (GW and CA.) Of course if they had the brilliance to do a 40K version (if it weren't still THQ's realm that is...) I'd have rainbows coming from every oriface.

Wow interesting.. I never played any Warhammer games though but know there's orcs and fantasy stuff... what I'm interested in is the "unannounced" game based on the Alien Universe.. that would be COOL~!!!

People are wishing for a 40k setting, and to be honest I have no idea how that is going to work, TW series are known for its HUGE set battles, and infantry formations. If you think about it how are they going to incorporate ballistic battles? I mean in Napoleon and Empire TW it made sense for infantry formation because muskets were woefully inaccurate, but in the future where bullets go where you aim at, infantry formation makes no sense, besides there are plenty of things to annihilate blobs of foot soldiers, like Plasma Canon, Basilisk, Manticore.... list goes on.

I guess it would be interesting to see Khorne Berzerkers hacking through a column of Guardsmen but a drawn out range battle would be awkward to see, units just standing there trading fire.

It would make more sense to do a Warhammer Fantasy setting, than 40k. I want to control me some Chaos Warriors, hacking through some Empire swordsman

Ooh, that has possiblities.  Now if only Koei would work them on the Romance of The Three Kingdoms series as it hasn't had a good one since ROTK4 Wall of Fire on the SNES.

I read Blizzard was in the works with Game Workshop to make a warhammer game. Game Workshop changed their mind. Blizzard took what they had, changed the lore and made Warcraft.

Sounds familar? Nintendo Sony = Playstation.

How Warhammer lost out on propriety to Warcraft I will never understand...I would much rather play Warhammer and prefer it's options, and most definitely like the Warhammer 40000 universe.

Not crazy about the Total War games, though there is an awesome Lord of the Rings mod for Medieval 2.  Anyhow, I'll take a look whenever CA releases a Warhammer game.

Meh, Warhammer "fantasy" is not as appealing to me as Warhammer 40k. I play 40k tabletop game (I play space wolves, tyranids and necrons) and Ive tried fantasy, but its just not as fun or as interesting as 40k.  I love what relic has done with the 40k universe and dawn of war is one of the best RTS games ever.

noooo nasty THQ, someone buy the 40k license and let Creative Assembly do something good with the ip. That or let Bohemia Interactive make a gritty FPS where you are an IG with a flashlight and cardboard armor tasked with defending an entire landmass from invading orks.

Im glad that THQ keeps 40k as they have been handling it flawlessly. I love the Relic made 40k games.

could this be a hint at a Warhammer total war game? I think it could be and it could be very interesting can't wait to hear more news.

Creative Assembly's making it?

i'll probably buy it.

idk why but, CA is one of 'those' developers for me. One of those that you have complete trust in to deliver a great game.

This sounds like an EPIC combination. At one time Warhammer and Blizzard were almost happened.

Well this sounds like a great match will be interesting to see what Creative does with this considering how amazing the new total war Rome looks I'd like to see the same approach to a Warhammer game.

good THQ deserves to keep 40k cause theyve done nothing but make good games in that genre

@ApocaLeepse Slitherine's working on a W40k turn-based game, while Sega's working on Fantasy in a Total War format.

Phadishar

@Vambran 40K as a TW game would just be large masses off men shooting against each other and the game would be over fast. No maneuvering to out flank or attack in the rear. 40K is just a really bad idea. Why not just play command and conquer if you like such games? Wouldn't be much different then TW would be.

reincarnator07

@Poodlejumper Honestly, I don't know if 40k would work in total war, due to the larger focus on ranged combat. I don't doubt they could do a great 40k game, I just don't know if they could do a great total war 40k game.

Poodlejumper

@nuclearV2mssile THQ still has 40K. This is for Warhammer Fantasy. Personally, I'd rather see someone try and make an RPG based off of the Fantasy Flight WH40K PnP RPG. Squad based and turn based. Hey it worked for XCOM (more or less).

@FreedomPrime I like the Warhammer Fantasy universe just as much as 40k.Best use of the license in a 'video game' was Dark Omen, imho.

@Phadishar @ShadowRun02 THQ went backrupt before you posted this.

@darnzyo  No, they actually tried to make a Warhammer game, but they couldn't get the rights, I think. I don't remember exactly what was the case. Before Warcraft.

hartattk

@DemonChorro THQ let Space Marine happen. I'll agree DoW 1 & 2 are fine surely you agree that a 40k game done Total War style would be awesome. I also hate the fact that THQ own the rights to 40k game, it's like if Disney sold mickey mouse.

FreedomPrime

@darnzyo  @adagio_spider blizzard has used gamesworkshops IP's as a influence on both warcraft and starcraft. I mean cmon, terrans are clearly rip off's of warhammer 40k's space marines. the zerg are tyranids, and protoss are eldar. as far as warcraft goes the humans are the empire, the orks, are well, the orks (but the thing that makes them rip offs of warhammer orks is their distinctive art style that gmaesworkshop created for them). the tauren are beastmen... blizzard really wasn't being shy when they took gamesworkshop's races and lore and made their won games out of them.  its all good tho, I like warhammer and blizzard so its all gravy for me.

darnzyo
darnzyo

@adagio_spider I was joking, thus my :P face. They basically used the Empire and Ork armies and made Warcraft. They are common fantasy 'races' though, so the argument is, I'm sure, that they built the fiction for Warcraft from various sources.
