anyone who goes overboard and is only about Diablo 3 and think torchlight sux..You obviously didnt play Diablo 1, because its like diablo 1. Im guessing Torchlight 2 will be like Diablo 2, probably more so than Diablo 3 was.

ONE word defines TL2 in my opinion, LATE.

It looks fun and cool but cannot compete with D3. Once again Runic is LATE. Guys at Runic you'r doing GREAT job but u go LATE. I understand launching a game such as TL2 is not easy task but game should've been out a couple of months ago when ppl was hungry for D3, then u enter the market with TL2 and make great profit, but now.... LATE.

Anyway GZ, it's a nice game.

Guys calm down.  The ARPG genre is big enough for the both Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3.  And for those of you who are writing Torchlight 2 off just because of the art-style...give the game a chance.  Torchlight 2 has many many good merits.  Some of which (gameplay, music, animations) are some of the best in the industry.  We know that Diablo 3 is good.  Most of you have probably played the weekend stress test like I did or got into the closed beta months ago.  You KNOW it's good.

But still for the sake of variety and fighting stagnation I beg you all to give Torchlight 2 a chance.  It's good.  Very good.  I'm in the closed beta right now and it can compete with Diablo 3 in every single way.  From min/maxing your character, to overall polish and fun.  To me they can coexist quite easily in the same world and take up the same place in your entertainment pantheon.  Some minor tips for when you play though: for skills you should experiment.  Every skill draws a base percentage of from your stats.  So even if you have 1 point in Flame Hammer as an Engineer, as you gain levels for your character and put more skill points into strength, Flame Hammer will get more powerful. But if you add more skillpoints into Flame Hammer it will either add a greater percentage, or add bonus damage on top of that.  (This was just an example, I'm typing this while my patch is downloading, so I'm not able to check my data)

Try out different builds because respecs are free up until level 10.  It should be right up your alley if you're into theorycrafting and experimenting.  The quest variety is there just like in D3, where random events and quests would spawn in the overworld area.

Those quests more or less are there to direct you to certain dungeons or objectives around the game's world, you don't have to pick up a single sidequest to enjoy the game.  You could just explore which is most of what I did.  And for those of you wondering how big the closed beta is?  Pretty big.  Meaty actually.  Your character can make it to level 21, and if you explore every nook and cranny on one character can take about 7-8 hours, not including playing multiplayer with friends or joining other's servers. (When you join someone's server, the game randomizes itself and all dungeons you've been to will be reset. I did this several times over the course of my beta playthrough with my Engineer, putting my final play time at 12hours 48 minutes).

And if you don't trust my opinion that's fine, however I have one last piece penny for your thoughts: Jay Wilson had nothing but praise for it, and thinks the genre could only benefit from having it around.   http://www.gamespot.com/diablo-iii/videos/perfectly-executed-diablo-iii-interview-with-jay-wilson-6374413/

 @reishid

Diablo 3 is entirely on another level. Your example wasnt valid.

Diablo 3 offers way deeper story, complete lore and customable skills/builds. Therefore as an RPG it feels way more complete and thats why it costs way more than T2 will.

T2 is a fantastic "d2" clone with a wow graphic touch .

Personally ill buy both. But we need to be honest and admit D3 superiority in everything.

You can look at it this way. Diablo 3 = iPhone, Torchlight 2 = Android phone. Both phones basically do the same things. People buy iPhones because it's "cool" with that apple logo that justifies another extra hundred bucks to it's price tag while some prefer to mod the hell out of their Android phones. It all comes down to preference.

Loving the look of this, and the animation seems really smooth. So far from watching this, I'm liking the amount of effects that just splash the screen with color. I really can't wait to get my hands on this when it comes out :).

As much as I like the hack/slash/loot genre I just can't get into the Torchlight series.  They're too cartoony.  It looks like they were designed for children.  I'll stick with Diablo.

With Diablo 3 released this game will fail, as good as it might be, no one as yet to surpass Blizzard in the three genres they are involved in. They need to wait at least 1 year before releasing this.

To say TL is inferior or at all a Diablo clone is just nonsense! Look into the history of Runic games people! These are the guys from Blizzard North that Made Diablo.  They were making Diablo b4 their company was bought out by Blizzard and made into Blizzard North! Runic is doing what they've always done, and non mimicing anyone! Aside from the massive amount of content you receive for $20, you receive a fully moddable game that will see tons of content created by it's own users! And absolutely no requirement to be connected to internet to play! Why any of you who so i will not play this game, even bother looking at this video is beyond me! Do us a favor and hate somewhere else!

Besides being a fan of Blizzard, I am glad that these people managed to make such a good game, both aesthetically and playability.

I had pre-ordered both Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2. I got a free Torchlight game with the pre-order. After playing that and seeing this live stream i am very disappointed. I dont care much about the graphics, but having played Diablo 2 before, I feel that this game sucks. There is a lot of loot, but the environment and music are really worse. I dont want to compare it to Diablo, but there is no feeling of dread, the surrounding environment does not reflect the general mood of that place. The monsters are ok, but feel very cartoonish and you do not feel a sense of achievement after reaching a particular boss. When a game like this is developed by the same developers who were involved in Diablo and Diablo 2, I expected better.

Thanks Code135! I am glad to hear your thoughts on this, (knowing that it's done) now just to wait a little bit longer.  Personally, next to Titan Quest, this is my favorite action RPG and its one I have thoroughly loved. Runic gave us a classic, and I'm sure Torchlight 2 is going to be just more to love! Also I heard a $20 dollar price tag....sweet!

Gamr2723

Can't wait for Torchlight 2!!! Loved the first one, and once I heard there a was second one coming I have been awaiting this with eager anticipation!!!! Looks really good, and I do really like the idea of wilderness play in addition to dungeons.  Clever idea. What is the targeted release date?

Guys just buy both, it's a good year for action RPG so let's celebrate coz this almost never happen that 2 triple A action rpg is released in the same year.  Support both then borderlands, grim dawn in the future.

notice the gigantic difference between the most preordered pc game in the history of amazon and the lesser, more inferior product.

@Doomy This was my initial reaction but I realized now that Runic made the RIGHT DECISION. A lot of players were disappointed with Diablo 3. Some of them even felt cheated and betrayed. Diablo 3 is a $60 game. People would at least try to finish it on normal no matter how they felt about it just to get their money's worth. After a month or a few weeks, these disgruntled players who expected a similar game experience like Diablo 2 from Diablo 3 are a prime market for Torchlight 2. With the way things are, with the network problems, gameplay changes, and bad business practices, Blizzard is actually helping Runic sell Torchlight 2.

Superman_legend
Superman_legend

@Doomy Better late and better. Diablo 3 is 12 years late and still short, with crappy drm and $60. So waste $60 on an 8 hours game that you have to stay online 24 seven.

saucex4

@AzatiS I can agree to the fact that D3 will have much more lore and story to the game, and that's one of it's great merits. Customizable builds on the other hand, personally I don't like the fact that you have to pick 1 skill out of each category, there is less freedom there. Yes in TL2 you have to manage a lot but I'm free to choose what I want to use. Graphically the D3 engine is most definitely DATED due to the long dev. I have no problem with long dev, let's make that clear, and I do not hate D3, but graphically TL1 + mods is already better than D3, not to mention stock TL2, or any future TL2 + mods. If story is extremely important to you go for D3, if not TL2...or both. I personally won't support Activision/Blizzard so TL2 for me :p

Superman_legend
Superman_legend

@reishid On another note just like android and iphone. Android usually has more features, less restrictions, and better hardware faster at a lower price tag. Diablo III 8 hour game less features bigger price tag. Can you say names win people more than products once they make a name for themselves

@bwockety It's all cartoons when you think about it.  The only difference is the black outlines that make the 3-D models look more like drawings.  You're missing out, IMO.

@destroyeur You should read the comment below mine, cause when you do, your comment doesn't make sense. Torchlight 1 sold over a million copies. Yes it's not as big as the diablo series, but to say a million copies is a failure is ignorant. Aside from the Epic story Runic Games has given this genre of game almost everything you could possibly want. Mods, Multiplayer, LAN Support etc...2 of those things that D3 will NEVER have and mods are strictly prohibited by Blizzard.  Many people will be getting both of these games, a lot of my friends have gotten at least torchlight 2 if not both.

saucex4
saucex4

@Geertwillers I already said that this is only on the normal difficult. For a normal difficulty it's pretty damn easy. You get potions, health regeneration, health wells, health pick-ups...really....You're never going to feel like your in a bind with all this health flying all over the screen. Secondly I never "hated" the diablo series or D3 for that matter, I'm not really sure where you get that from. I like D3 with exception to the health issue, and the story seems interesting. What I don't like is Blizzard/Activision and their way of business, which is why I am not giving them my support until they choose to change their business practices.

c0kemusheen
c0kemusheen

@Geertwillers I agree, anybody who can judge the whole Diablo III game by the Beta which was only the beginning of the tutorial, and ONLY the easiest difficulty, is a complete fool. Yet it's so typical to see gamers jump to such idiotic conclusions.

Oggy1985
Oggy1985

@venkat3056 I beg to differ. I played Torchlight and really enjoyed the game. Found it to be real refreshment in the genre, and on top of that it's priced more than fairly for what you get. On the other hand, can't say the same for Diablo 3.

saucex4
saucex4

@venkat3056 You say you don't care about graphics, but then go about the game being cartoony...seems like you care. If you don't like the art style then you shouldn't have bought the game. I feel that both games have their merits. If you want a story go for D3, if you want gameplay that is fun and challenging go for TL2. My opinion anyway.

Code135
Code135

@Gamr2723 The game is done to be honest, Runic games are just pulling back the release date because of D3 coming out in a few days and nobody would want to face them off head-to-head. Steam says "summer 2012" but in my opinion it should be in 3 weeks or so, probably the same time next month.

saucex4
saucex4

@Pr3acher I didn't just look...I played. Graphically TL1 + mods is superior to D3. D3's engine is dated due to their long dev time. Any product with moddablility will last far longer than a game without of similar quality. Skyrim for instance. D3 will have the better story, but Torchlight gameplay and graphics, and mods will make TL2 an obvious choice for me. Call me a hermit who lives under a rock, or anything you want, but I'll be damned before I give money to Activision/Blizzard.

reishid

@Pr3acher One is an overpriced and overhyped game that took ages to reach its current disappointing state while the other one is a cheaper alternative that gives the same experience.

Bro listen me.... I was huge diablo fan and action RPG genre freak... After i hit end game in D3 and 250 hours , 3 chars to 60 level  can admit.... GAME SUCKS.. period..

Biggest letdown i had in at least 10 years. Itemization is broken , builds are "broken" force you to play with specific skills/runes , Uniques/set items are way worse than random rares/blues , difficulty is ridiculous affecting the fast pace these games should have by ridiculous "packs"... I can go on and go on....

Everything in D3 end game is designed in such way to FORCE you into RMAH/AH... For obvious reason.

You know what? As you can see on my original post above , i thought D3>> TL2 easily... Now you know what? I quit D3 already and i cant wait for TL2!!! Weird ha?!! Its #@$@#% true!!! Me , one of the biggest diablo junkies walking on earth..quit D3!!!I mean..daaamn!

@Superman_legend This is basically it. People bought the "Blizzard" and "Diablo" brand the same way phone buyers bought the "Apple" and "iPhone" name. If you strip off the "Diablo" and "Torchlight" label from both games and compare them both on their own merits then I'm pretty sure that they are both on par, which says a lot because one is supposed to be a $60 AAA game that took 10 years to develop while the other one is a $20 indie game that took around 2 years to make.

@c0kemusheen The beta I played was on normal difficulty. Yes it doesn't represent the entire game, but did I say it did? No, I said normal difficulty. And I've also said that the harder difficulties will probably provide more challenge. And let me be clear that I don't hate D3, I've said time and time again both D3 and TL2 have their merits, D3 will have an epic story for example that TL series will probably never have. Again the only thing I've specifically said I didn't like was the health issue, and the company Blizzard/Activision itself.

venkat3056

 @Oggy1985

I agree that the price is very competitive when compared to Diablo 3. But, I am basing my conclusion based on my play in Diablo 2 and not Diablo 3. Given a chance, I will happily play Diablo 2 instead of Torchlight.

venkat3056
venkat3056

 @saucex4

Let me clarify what i actually meant when i said it was cartoonish. Diablo 2 was a 2D game. I enjoyed it. So i dont care about the graphics much. In fact, Torchlight graphics is far better than Diablo 2 and is in 3D. What im saying is that the boss does not feel like a boss. He does not seem to dominate the environment. He pretty much looks like all the guys you faced before. The music does not feel like a dungeon crawler too, despite the fact that most of Torchlight happens at various levels as you descend through the mines. Also to your response, have you played any of the Diablo games? Diablo is much harder than Torchlight. You dont even have the fog of war in Torchlight. Why do u think people have been playing Diablo for the past 7 years?

chano880
chano880

@saucex4 There's graphics and then there's art style, which is what venkat is talking about when he refers to the cartoonish monsters. Completely different things.

startman_1999
startman_1999

@saucex4 C'mon.. seriously now.  I played the open beta weekend of Diablo 3 and it does NOT look dated. Excellent quality in every respect and I'm no Blizzard fanboy.  Objectively their products are extremely well-engineered, polished and addictive. That said, I still like Torchlight, but the UI seems a little bland judging from this video.

startman_1999
startman_1999

@reishid They are expensive, but you also have to take into account the production values. Blizzard games are sublimely designed, engineered and balanced. Personally, I'll play both, eventually.

Eraldus

@jessie82 Yeah, it will need your net  too, but not for playing a single player mode, which is awesome.

GamespotSucksD

@oipluckie dont see much difference between this, diablo3, or dungeon siege3 graphically. after playin dungeon siege3 & lil bit of diablo3 beta i wouldn't be surprised if torchlight 2 is the best of the 3 games.

saucex4
saucex4

@venkat3056 My comparison is not with D2, it is with D3. Yes I've played D1 and D2. They were more challenging than games that come out these days, but for the time diablo was not exactly a hard game to begin with. D3 WAY too easy on normal difficulty. You are given so many ways to get health it's baffling. I'm sure it will be more difficult on harder difficulties. I feel both games have their merits though overall I have to say TL2 takes top spot for me. The only reason why I won't buy D3 is because Blizzard = Activision and Activision will never get a penny of my money.

saucex4
saucex4

@chano880 Venkat never mentioned "art style" directly. The term graphics could mean both or one of them exclusively.

saucex4
saucex4

@startman_1999 Fair enough. It's your opinion to have. However, looking at the textures, I see something a bit dated, like this game could have come out in 2008. D3's "flash factor" like when you get achievements, and rewards and such is far better than TL2 for sure, but for the price, and the time blizzard spent on the game, I have far higher expectations in terms of graphical fidelity.
