The NPD Group has released its monthly report for October 2015, detail the top-selling new, physical games at retail in the United States. Unsurprisingly, Halo 5: Guardians, the first original Halo game for Xbox One, came out on top.

Trailing behind that was NBA 2K16 (last year's game, 2K15, was the top seller in October 2014) and Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The big PS4 exclusive for the month, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection came in at number nine. If sales of games across all platform weren't combined, Super Mario Maker would have been number ten.

Also of note is Rock Band 4 coming in at number ten. This is the first Rock Band release since Rock Band 3 in 2010. The return of Guitar Hero (also absent since 2010) with Guitar Hero Live did not make the top ten; it was number 11. An important point is that it released later in the month than Rock Band (October 20 versus October 6). If games were instead ranked in terms of dollar sales, Rock Band 4 would be number four for the month, while Live would be number six.

Compared with October 2014, software sales were down 3 percent from $349.4 million to $337.7 million. According to NPD analyst Liam Callahan, this trend reflects "hardware as console sales were offset by a 42 percent decline in portable sales. While console sales were up a modest 1 percent, 8th generation consoles had a strong month with 62 percent growth over October 2014 while 7th generation console sales dropped by 63 percent--higher than the year-to-date decrease in sales of 51 percent."

"Another cause for the decrease in October new physical sales was the 4 percent decrease in dollar sales for new launches," Callahan added. "New launch weakness, coupled with a 5 percent drop in the performance of Q3 launches, led to the overall category decline of 3 percent."

The top ten follows below. The order of platforms indicates most to fewest sales, showing that each multiplatform game (except Rock Band 4) sold better on PS4 than Xbox One.

Despite the PS4 having more titles in the top ten and a price drop, the Xbox One came out on top in overall console sales for October.
