For PlayStation 2 gamers, the phrase "Tennis, anyone?" was a burr in their pom-pom-adorned socks. The two best tennis games available, Mario Power Tennis and Top Spin, were exclusive titles for the GameCube and Xbox, respectively.

Then, Take-Two Interactive purchased Microsoft's studio in Salt Lake City, Utah, now named Indie Built, and designated it as part of its 2K Sports brand. The developer was responsible for the Amped and Links franchises and oversaw development of Top Spin, which was worked on by Power and Magic Developments, a developer based in Paris.

While Amped still appears to be on the chairlift and Links has yet to step up to the tee box, 2K Sports has announced that Top Spin will be serving some heat on the PS2 this summer. The game has not yet been rated or priced.

Top Spin brings 16 of the top professional tennis players to the court in singles and doubles competition. The PS2 version includes Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Roger Federer, and more. There's no word on whether "tennis player" Anna Kournikova will return in the PS2 edition. Top Spin has a create-a-player career mode and will be the only online PS2 tennis game.
