Tony Hawk: Shred sells 3,000 in first week - Report

Cowen and Company reveal dismal initial sales for skateboard legend's latest multiplatform title; DJ Hero 2 sales at 59,000.

Last year's Tony Hawk: Ride was critically panned but still managed to sell over 114,000 units in its first month on the market. Its sequel, which was promised to be "better," added snowboarding to the series but performed substantially worse during its first few days on sale.

Adding snowboarding to Tony Hawk: Shred failed to add sales.

According to Cowen and Company, (via gamesindustry.biz), Tony Hawk: Shred was a "virtual no-show" at US retail during its debut week. Launching on October 26, the game sold only 3,000 units across all platforms, according to the firm.

Last year Tony Hawk himself took to Twitter to defend Ride and its poor reviews. This year, however, Mr. 900 has been mum on the subject on the social networking site.

Looking ahead, Chicago-based developer Robomodo--which suffered hefty layoffs last month--has said that it will not abandon the Tony Hawk skateboarding peripheral soon. The studio is entertaining the idea of building new titles using the board, including possibly a surfing installment.

Also included in the report were sales statistics for Activision's well-reviewed turntable sequel, DJ Hero 2. According to the report, that title spun sales of 59,000 units across all platforms. Last year, the original DJ Hero sold 123,000 copies across all platforms in its first week on sale.

Another of Activision's flagship series has suffered declining sales this year, as Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock moved under 100,000 units in its first 30 days, compared to Guitar Hero 5's 499,000 opening-month tally. It's not all bad news for the publisher, as last week's launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops topped the blockbuster debut of its predecessor, selling 5.6 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in North America and the UK alone.

Instead of a Tony Hawk game, how about the game teaching people how to snowboard instead.

Please Tony Hawk and Activision, let Neversoft do all the work again and do a fallow up on Proving Ground, Underground or Pro Skater.

Despite these lackluster sales, they'll probably just keep making them, lol. And they'll keep sucking and sucking. Tony Hawk and Activision just don't get it do they?

@JDizzle702 They're trying to repair the damage Ride inflicted on the series.

The Tony Hawk series is horrible now that you need to use the stupid board.. I was hoping Shred would at least get rid of the board..

The DJ Hero games are actually really fun. The Tony Hawk games suck though.

DJ Hero is not fun. It's not fun to scratch on a turntable. Blur sells more than both these games combined and they abandon the studio, I'm sure they will still try to force us into a DJ Hero 3 and a Tony Hawk Surf & Skate next year.

I think we need to have an official Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5 now. They can't keep losing money like this, no matter how much support Tony has for the idea. They need to pull a Sonic and get back to the basics.

@kekejefferis YES!!! Kids should just buy a real skateboard than this crap. You nailed it buddy.

They should drop the tony hawk name and keep the engine, then add online multiplayer. I want to beat people with my skateboard after an epic grind. Also, it needs space levels and underwater levels.

maybe tony should of looked at the product in a consumer's point of view instead of a skater's then he would of realised it was a terrible idea from the start.

Suprised it managed to sell even that much. Series should just be left to die off, Tony Hawks is hardly in the lime light of skateboarding culture. Meaning the only people that would care about this rubbish is little kids or parents that just dont understand what they are buying. Save the money and just buy another game or a real skateboard.

Funny this is the first time I actually ever heard of this game and I read crap on this site everyday. Is this what Bobby Kotick was referring to when he talked about taking the soul out of video games? This series died ten years ago, Activision needs to let it go. And as far as Tony Hawk goes, he's a has-been as much as the series that bares his name. What a sell out, thanks Tony for single handily ruining skateboard culture. He never had the talent of Christian Hossi, and he never will.

If they just remade tony hawks 3 or 4 in HD with extended challenges, move sets, stages and perhaps some thrown in skate videos and bails. I'd be sold. The arcade fun of Tony Hawks may not hold a torch to the realism of Skate, but damn its still fun.

Activision will be hurting during its next earnings reveal. Despite the fact that COD sold well (it always does) nothing else seemed to move that well at all, meaning they are going to be hundreds of millions short of where they probably expected to be. Might be a good time to unload some Activision stock.

I'd like to think that kids didn't buy the game because they're actually outside doing the real thing. But we all know the truth of the matter is people would rather just shoot stuff. You think Tony Hawks an you think old.. It used to be good, but theres only so much you can do on a board. "Tony Hawks Surfboarding" anyone?

maybe codemasters should be making TH games from now on, then it will be as awesome as DIRT 2...

Guide to Success: 1. Give the Tony Hawk series back in the hands of Neversoft. 2. Make Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5. 3. Possibly a HD remake of Tony Hawks Pro Skater. or Stop continually killing the Tony Hawk series which I used to enjoy so much.

Its what happens when they release the same game with a mildly different title every year. Work on it longer, an release one every 2-3 years. Worked for Halo and Gran Turismo.

I gave up playing TH games after proving ground. The only thing that was cool about that game was the soundtrack. Thats about it.

If someone told me a few years ago that the Tony Hawk franchise would be in this state its currently in I would have laughed. Oh how the mighty has fallen. This report should sent a warning to Activision that milking a franchise is not a good idea. for the long run. The same could happen one day to Call of Duty.

Maybe the game and the peripherals will get dumped in a landfill like all those E.T. games did back in the day. That would give me a good laugh.

Hopefully, the same thing happens to the Call of Duty franchise starting next year so that Activision will finally be forced to adopt new IPs instead of rehashing the same franchises over and over.

Eventually all of Activision's milking will mean that COD sales will only help them break even.

people dont want a fake skateboard, i would say most people that like tony hawk games dont know how to skate in real life, so why would the game be fun for them, if they wanted to learn they would buy a real skateboard. after th p8 the games sucked. they should just remake tony hawk pro skater 1, 2 and 3 for the current systems, and put it all in one disc or something, I think that would sell more than 3,000 lol.
