Tomb Raider PS4 runs at 60fps, but what about Xbox One?

Square Enix says both platforms will offer "the same outstanding experience," but won't confirm frame rate for Xbox One version.

by

The PlayStation 4 version of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will run at 60fps, but Square Enix isn't saying what frame rate Xbox One owners can expect.

"Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience," a Square Enix spokesperson told Eurogamer today. Both versions run in 1080p, it was previously confirmed.

"Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy," the representative added.

Producer Scot Amos told Gamesradar yesterday that the PS4 version of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Editions will run at 60fps, but did not mention a frame rate for the Xbox One version.

With Square Enix keeping quiet, we'll have to wait until the games are released to determine the difference in frame rate between the two platforms. A game's frame rate, which varies depending on elements like system hardware and memory, is commonly used to compare graphics performance.

Hate it how Xb1tches still say that 60fps doesn't matter when ANY game that ran 60 on 360 last gen was a Godsend! All games on Ps4 run at or above 50-60 fps. Anything less is LAST GEN! The framerate IS the difference between last gen and next gen for those of us who never had a $1500 computer! Stop saying it doesn't matter because it is the Quintessential Next Gen Feature!!!

None of this is going to matter because Microsoft is known for paying people off in order to get their way. They will probably pay developers to hold back on what they can do on the PS4 version of their games, so that they don't make the Xbox look like the overrated crapbox that it is.

I STILL can't believe they thought it was going to be a great idea to go ahead with developing what is really just a fancy cable box that can play games.

I would be impressed if it actually runs 1080p 60 fps consistently without frame drops. My PC is much beefier than a PS4 and I didn't get consistent 60 fps at max detail. Sometimes it would drop to the high 40s.

If it actually looks better than the PC version like they claim, I'll be even more impressed.

That's why I went with PS4, cheaper and more powerful. I don't need a stupid camera. My friend argues, but I can walk in my room and say "Xbox On". Are you really that lazy, to where you can't press a button? Also, a lot of the voice commands are shiest, he spends more time talking really boldly and loud, to get his Xbox One to hear his commands, than he could just using the controller. Even then, the PS4 has the optional Eye, which has the essential voice commands.

I would like to get an Xbox One eventually, because I do enjoy Halo, and would like to play Dead Rising 3, but in the meantime, the PS4 is definitely the way to go.

What the hell is the matter with Xbox One? Seriously. Aren't we told every frikin day how the PS4 an Xbox One are practically similar hardware-wise? So what's the problem? Someone please make some light in this! Why is it so hard for Xbox One to run games in 60 frames but not for PS4?

Is it gonna be like this for every game this generation? PS4 60fps, Xbox One....uh we're not telling, just buy it and see.

microsoft sure are hiding a lot about xbox one (paying developers not to reveal information related to their console). my guess is they are hiding how crap it is.

...it's 2013.  I thought LAST GEN was supposed to have 1080p, 60fps, 4D games.  :P

This is first generation since original Xbox where Sony will have edge over Micro$oft when it'll come to multiplatform titles .

On other hand , didn't they say that "Definitive edition is built from ground up for next gen consoles" .? Ya built from ground up , yet can't optimize enough to run the game on better frame rates , it's the same game with different skin of Lara .

But what about Xbone? 720p at 30fps that's what. I thought we all knew that by now.

@Andy72774 you are so full of bullshit, the ps4 have major fps drops when they alow games to go up to 60 fps thats why they patched killzone so you can lock it to 30fps

@88Metallica You actually don't need the Playstation Camera to use the PS4's voice commands. Just plug in the included  ear bud w/microphone and talk away.

@88Metallica "XBox, On"....on average it takes me 5 times for me to say that in order for it to turn on. Ambient noise is the Kinect's Kryptonite...and not everyone lives in a libray (I don't).

@xsonicchaos

PS4 vs XBONE *NOTE PS4 specs in bold*

1)Noticeably higher floating-point performance-1.84 TFLOPS vs 1.31 TFLOPS

2)Noticeably more shading units- 1152 vs 768

3)Significantly higher memory bandwidth- 176 GB/s vs 68.3 GB/s

4)Explicitly more render output units (ROPs) -32 vs 16

5)Notably, more compute units- 18 vs 12

6)Newer version of RAM memory- GDDR5 vs DDR3

Explanations

1)Floating-point performance is a measurement of the raw processing power of the GPU.

2)Shading units (or stream processors) are small processors within the graphics card that are responsible for processing different aspects of the image.

3)A higher memory bandwidth means the memory can be accessed faster and therefore data can be retrieved quickly, having a positive effect on the performance.

4)The ROPs are responsible for some of the final steps of the rendering process, writing the final pixel data to memory and carrying out other tasks such as anti-aliasing to improve the look of the graphics.

5)6 more compute units. Compute units are a part of the GPU that contain the stream processors, an important component of graphics processing power.

6)PS4 comes with GDDR5 type of memory, while XBONE comes with an older version GDDR3.

@themc_7 over time they'll probably become closer with subtle differences.  Same thing happened last gen like how the ps3 generally had poorer lighting, fps and load times at first but people figured out how to use it and the ports became equal.

lostn

@themc_7 They will probably just build it on the lowest common denominator and have them run the same on both.

@Cloud_imperium your joking right? first xbox had shit for multi plat games. PS2 had pretty much ALL the multi plat games.

@berserker66666 Uhm... Forza,fifa,bk2 and the vast majority of x1 games are 1080p 60fps

Your statement has been violently refuted and brutally invalidated.

Microsoft's State-of-the-Art AD CAMPAIGN = brainwashing. Even high end PC have frame rate dips. all games frame rate dip that are not frame rate locked. Ryse had frame rate dropping in the teens like 13fps.

Andy72774
Andy72774

@Tommi88 @Andy72774 Let me guess, You're an Xboner. Wow, you never played Killzone did you? I experienced framelag ONCE! hahaha Why not research what you're talking about before blabbing empty assumptions and theories. Do you're homework. I have both smartone. I know which one is better...Ryse had PLENTY of framerate lags and barely ran at 45 FPS!!! Get a life Xbot.

@g0ldenpr0pet you must not know how to talk. Mine turns on lickity split every time I say "xbox on" and Xbox off, and every other command. Pull the meatstick outa your mouth before you try to speak maybe?

@g0ldenpr0petCan you say Xbox Off in a multiplayer match and turn off someone else's Xbox?

@spetrario Does it translate to a meaningful increase in performance though? Numbers are hard to interpret without benchmarks.

@Cakapoo @themc_7 yeah I'm confident that over time both systems will be on par, but in the mean time MS seems to scared to say the truth. They know it looks bad on them.

@tonytones21 Yeah, LOL. But to be the years go by so fast now and since it's so early in the year it is justifiable to get it mixed up, for now.

@cvbz@Cloud_imperium "Multi-plat" by definition means both consoles have it...

But generally they ran better on Xbox than PS.

Wait til mire devs get even more familiar with ps4 code. The disparity will be even larger. Sorry to rain on your parade xbot.

@mr_enlightened@berserker66666Vast Majority, I think you need to do a recount, and it's not hard to make a racing game run at 60 fps they aren't as resource heavy as most genres in most cases.

DrKill09
DrKill09

@mr_enlightened @berserker66666 X1?  The console that came out in 2001, had many games in 480p, some in 720p, and some in 1080i?  ...OH, you mean the X BONE, not the XBox1... the only good Microsoft console.

Andy72774
Andy72774

Or better yet, why not think for yourself and stop letting Microsoft's State-of-the-Art AD CAMPAIGN think for you...You'll save money, AND you'll have a better experience. Stop being biased and do as I did. Compare, Contrast, and make the RIGHT decision...instead of the big marketing/hype/brainwashed decision.

Most people don't have $300- $500 GPU or a gaming pc . PC gaming is a small niche market and not mainstream like consoles gaming . PC are very different than game consoles STFU. You don't even know what you are taking about today's games are very GPU intensive and less CPU intensive the GPU way more important than the CPU today's games. STFU

@lostn @spetrario Sure doesn't everyone knows that most console games horsepower comes from the CPU. both those GPU's in both systems are pathetic in todays GPU standards.

Cakapoo

@brocklee5000 is that why all ps3 games look and run better than 360 ones?  Last gen games could've had more graphical disparities but didn't.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

@mr_enlightened Well the games you mentioned can be done at 60 fps and 1080p because they aren't very heavy on resources, a soccer game and a driving game, look at BF4 or DR3 which actually need some horsepower, they run at 30 fps, BF4 at 900p.

Name me some games that are graphically and technically showcase games and find a couple that don't run better on PS4, it isn't just that they haven't gotten used to the hardware yet, the console is less powerful and it shows.

mr_enlightened
mr_enlightened

@mkeezay22 @mr_enlightened @berserker66666 Why? So you can say no? Even if i demonstrate irrefutable evidence?
