Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition skipping PC release

Crystal Dynamics says game was designed "from the ground up" for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

by

The Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was designed "from the ground up" for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and thus will not be available on PC, developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed on the game's forums.

"Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was designed and rebuilt from the ground up for next-generation consoles. At this time a PC update is not planned," the company said.

Crystal Dynamics producer Scott Amos said last month that the studio was open to the idea of bringing the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition to PC "if it makes sense."

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition launches on January 28, 2014 for Xbox One and PS4. The game will be available as a physical product, as well as digitally through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

Crystal Dynamics last month defended the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, stating that the project was "not a simple facelift," as some gamers had claimed.

The game runs in 1080p, costs $60, and is described as a "fully rebuilt" version of the original. It features an all-new Lara model "created to take advantage of the power of next-gen consoles," as well as TRESS FX technology that promises to deliver "realistic" hair simulation and motion. Every strand of Lara's hair will be "physically active."

Guys i hate to admit this but i own and played the hell out of Tomb Raider on PC Maxed out 4xTXAA @1080P on PC and after watching the new videos of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition on PS4 and Xbox One its clear that the games graphics engine was REBUILT completely and looks even better then the PC version maxed out, I may even buy it because it looks so good, and Laura's new rebuilt face structure makes her look even hotter;) but no really guys the PS4 and Xbox One have impressed me with the Tomb Raider Definitive edition

WE WANT THE DEFINITIVE EDITION ON PC

Stupid argument is stupid. The PS4 and XB1 run on the same architecture as PCs now, you can't use that excuse anymore Squenix.

definitive edtion is the console port of the pc version ;)....A First in history!!!!

Probably because they wouldn't be able to argue their full $60 price tag effectively to those who already had the hardware badass to run the original version. It by all accounts would just be the 'simple facelift' they're proclaiming that it isn't.

Zjarcal

Would've been redundant to release it on PC considering the PC version was already the superior one anyway.

This version is simply for consoles to catch up to that.

But you're making it in PCs! come on... oh well, good stuff.

I have been wanting to say this for a long time and in this instance I can actually say it.. Bow down before the console master race you dirty PC peasants ;)

Not like it was the best damn game ever.

I won it in 10 hours and the puzzles were so much easier than anything I have ever played in any other TR game.  Unless I were to scour the damn game for collectibles (that shit is getting old fast devs) I daresay I could care less.

Definitive Edition is just a port of the PC version. All they would need to do is change the game's title on the steam store page.

x86 architecture vs x86 architecture....yeah it wasn't designed for PC at all...

What a waste of time and money... Instead of building a new Tomb Raider, let alone a new IP; you rebuild the same game less then a year later... Is there another WGA strike or something?

Must haves for the price of readmission:

• Bigger Tombs with better puzzles
• Free roam across the entire island without warp
• more XP upgrades
• Real time damage (like, but not as extreme as MK)
• Not so serious costumes
• $30 off coupon

Just looking for more than a graphical upgrade...

"...was designed and rebuilt from the ground up for next-generation consoles..."

What does that mean? They are designed to be played with a controller? They are designed for the architecture that next-gen uses? New powerful graphics?

Frankly, i see no excuse not to port it to PC, and no, "...was designed and rebuilt from the ground up for next-generation consoles..." is NOT a valid one. Just be honest and say: "We don't wanna port it yet. We want the PC gamers to scream their hearts out, demanding that we port it."

Already played it, was good, moved on to other things.

What resolution will the Xbox One be, considering this would be the "Definitive" version... :-/

The definitive version on ps4 xb1 will likely look less good than the old one on a high end pc.

PC version already has TressFx...has 1080P...oh thats right it is the "definitive" version.  Let's see how many 1080P remakes we can do for these next generation consoles.  I can see it now: Street Fighter 4: The Definitive Ultimate edition.  Far Fry 3: The Ultimate edition.  Call of Duty: Definite Ghosts version.  In glorious 1080P.  Why not spend those resources and make a REAL game next time Crystal.

They did not need to remake it for PC, we already got the good version.

Anybody with a brain should see they are just milking money from dumb enough Xbox, PS4 gamers willing to buy it. They see an opportunity to make more money with new consoles and hungry gamers desperate for new games. what a pathetic joke.

Everybody wants a cut on these new money milking machines.

btw if this is the "definitive version" then there will be a nude code right?

my PC could barely handle this game when it came out, but i'm excited to try this on PS4 as I never beat it on PC.

I already bought the regular version on PC and it looks 200% better than the old generation consoles, but damn i would buy it again just for the extras!

You can already get this game for 10$ on steam

PC piracy. That is the one and only reason this game is not coming to PC atleast until after the console launch.

"...the studio was open to the idea of bringing the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition to PC 'if it makes sense.'"

Well it doesn't, we already have the definitive edition. Next, please.

@Zjarcal Anyway, PC customers need at least a patch update to their games, it's called fairplay

Yocaptonyo101
Yocaptonyo101

@xenotex  Your joking?  Consoles can't even get cod ghosts to run at 60fps at 1080p yet.  This is 2014, PC's are already playing games at 144fps and at 4k resolution.  You get what you pay for in this world so dropping a couple hundred dollars on a console that has to have everything optimized for it because the internals suck so badly is not something I want to take part in.  This edition was created solely to show some better graphics that the new hardware is now capable of, barely...  PC has seen these graphics and far better for years now if not longer.  The Witcher 2 for instance released in 2011, look up how beautiful that game is when maxed out.  Crysis 3 one of the most demanding and beautiful games to date was released in February of 2013.  So go ahead and keep watching your slideshow on consoles and ridiculing PC's because consoles are "obviously better"

DaneXL

@Fabian85 Considering the next gen version is rebuilt and intended to be graphically superior to any other version, including PC, that's doubtful.

Death_Masta187
Death_Masta187

@Vambran

With the advent of steam sales this argument is not really valid anymore. Try again. The reason it’s not coming to PC is because this version is already out on PC. The XB1, PS4 are just getting ports of the PC version. If they add any in game missions and what not they can just patch it in or bundle it in a $5 DLC.

hystavito

@Vambran This argument has been made many times, it might be true in some cases.  My problem with it though, I have never seen statistics on the number of console owners that also own gaming capable PCs.  I have a hard time believing it would be a high number, but again I just don't know.

Perhaps it would be higher around here, but we, people that do things like follow gaming sites frequently and comment, we're probably quite a small group compared to the overall market these console games are selling to.

@wilhelmalexis While your comment may be considered crude by many, I must admit it made me laugh out loud, literally.

@DeadorRock

You do realize that the xb1 and ps4 version has higher res texture, environmental physics, improved tressfx, redone face and expressions.  And I am a pc gamer who is pissed that they didn't bother to put that much work into the pc version to begin with.

Death_Masta187
Death_Masta187

@DaneXL@Fabian85

If it can run at 4k or even 1440p and keep 60fps than maybe it would then be on par with the PC version. I have been gaming on PC for the last 9 years at native 1200p (1440p over the last year) so gaming at 1080p is not special or better than PC. Its catching up to what PC has been doing for the last 9-10 years.

santinegrete
santinegrete

@emptycow718 @DeadorRock  you also felt that the hair effect was more "overacting" than another layer of realism? My PC could run it, but I turned it off because it anoyed me.

DeadorRock
DeadorRock

@plm3d_basic@DeadorRock
Higher res texture - we got that with the original release.
Improved TressFX - yeah, they optimized it so it'll run on consoles. It looks the same.
Redone face - Eww I don't want that. I really don't like the new model, the original had a unique feeling about it. The new model looks generic.

How could they charge us 60 for what is basically what we got on march, 2013? It would be nice if they released it as a free update tho (not gonna happen).

rhinoflash999
rhinoflash999

@plm3d_basic @DeadorRock Thats the reason they aren't putting it on pc, because this definitive version is basically what already came out for pc and you can get it for 10$ on steam so it would be pointless to put this out

DeadorRock
DeadorRock

@plm3d_basicI actually do. I've read what IGN said about it, I watched the video preview, and I mantain what I said about it. The PC original release looks every bit as good as this facelift version, not to mention Lara's new model sucks. Of course that's my opinion :)

@emptycow718@DeadorRock@plm3d_basicAnd this is relevant to this article because...? Seriously, who even cares about a basketball game? I most certainly don't, as I don't like sports games. But if it makes you feel better, good for you.
