Titanfall won't sell as well as Call of Duty, says Zampella

Respawn Entertainment cofounder says upcoming shooter won't match Call of Duty sales out of the gate; multiplayer-only game will be $60.

Respawn Entertainment's upcoming online shooter Titanfall will not post Call of Duty-level sales numbers, at least not right away, according to cofounder Vince Zampella.

Speaking on southern California's KFI AM60 recently, Zampella said building a new franchise takes time.

"It's a new brand," Zampella said about Titanfall. "You build up momentum over the years when you put out a new brand. It's starting over, so it won't sell as well [as Call of Duty]."

"But for us it's...kind of a passion project. We love it. It's something new," he added. "It's taking the old paradigm of these shooter games being very grounded and two-dimensional and now adding this verticality to it and making it something that's a new experience; something that people haven't seen before."

Also in the interview, Zampella confirmed that Titanfall--a multiplayer-only shooter--will retail for $60 at launch in 2014 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Zampella co-created the now-billion-dollar Call of Duty series at Infinity Ward and worked on the franchise from its onset until Activision fired him and other founder Jason West in 2010. The pair founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010 with dozens of former Infinity Ward developers and secured funding for Titanfall through the EA Partners program.

West has since left the company. "Revelations" from the Call of Duty lawsuit reportedly led to a rift between West and Zampella. A source said in June that Zampella felt West was "sabotaging" Respawn Entertainment.

Excited for this beast of a game.  Wish it were coming out sooner.  Multiplayer only seems awesome also.  Not every game has to have a forced single player campaign.

duh...
It's not even a quality issue. It's a brand recognition issue.

I played this game at PAX, if people buy call of duty instead of this for multiplayer they're insane. This game was incredible, within 5 seconds of picking up the controller I was wall running, double jumping through windows, breaking necks, climbing mechs on foot ripping open their hatches and filling them with lead. The mechs are a blast to pilot. The controls are super tight, the only reservation I have, is that the game was running on PC's with Xbox controllers attached. I worry that the game won't run as smooth or look as good on Xbox one. The other problem is I'm not buying an xb1......so I really hope it does end up going multiplatform. Honestly though I think this game redefines MP the same way the original modern warfare did. It really did feel just as much a campaign mode as a mutiplayer match.

This game will be more popular than MechAssault was on the first XBOX or Chromehounds was on the 360. Both of those games had single player campaigns hardly anyone ever played. I like that with Titanfall, they used ALL their resources to make multi-player online super awesome. XBOX ONE, BABY. BAD TO THE BONE!

So no single player....EPIC FAIL!

im surprised so many people are mad about it not having a single player.

MP Only? cool.  I'll get it in the bargain bin next to Rage.

I was looking kinda excited until he said multiplayer only...i dont play COD multiplayer at all....im thinking this should only be half the Price since it doesnt include single player

His statement about adding veritcality as something no one's experienced before is not exactly true - Tribes added the same element. Which is the reason I'm very excited about Titanfall. The verticality element gave Tribes a very steep learning curve - there was always room for improvement - which is what I liked the most about the game. Unfortunately, this also limited Tribes' audience as too many people found it too difficult. Hopefully, the same won't happen to Titanfall.

I always skip a game when I hear online only. I hate that game is moving this way. In a few years when people stop playing them, publishers eventully shuts them down. All we can look back on are a bunch of ghost towns.

As a multiplayer online game, Titanfall will not get my money vote.

This guy is on repeat. What if it was released on PS4 ? Then it would be impossible for the XBox fanboys to enjoy the game.......dduuuhhh !

Planetside 2 is coming to PS4. Look at those servers and how massive they are, and you're saying that's a good idea, but Titanfall wouldn't be? That statement is completely contradictory.

Whenever I play a singleplayer game on any shooter. I feel like I am wasting time.  Time I could be using to gain XP online.

I still haven't player single player on BF3. :p

Don't really care how much it sells just hope they get a great profit. I am buying this without a doubt and with more time to media exposure, I am sure it will do just fine.

For those worried that Titanfall will make its way onto the PS4, fear not. It won't. Respawn is releasing the game on the Xbox brand and PC because their servers allow the capabilities of dedicated online and a strong matchmaking experience, one that the PS3/4 does not allow in any context. So safely put, Titanfall will be an Xbox One and PC exclusive. Let the rage commence

Since EA owns this game and likes money, we will see it on the PS4 someday.

Lag in Titan fall will be unbearable...very fast moving targets(human) wont go over well even with dedicated servers....

One reason COD sells well is because targets are slow as shit = Lag isnt as bad...and with and no fast moving vehicles.

"Zampella confirmed that Titanfall--a multiplayer-only shooter--will retail for $60"

No thanks. For $60 other shooters are offering more value with different modes of play for both online and offline gamers.

I'd say he's trying to manage expectations in case all the excitement that's building behind the game doesn't translate to huge release sales, as well as the fact it's not on all platforms.

Still this will be something special and may just put a big dent in CoD on 360, PC and X1.

Well, this is sure a stretch. I predict people will continue to need food, air and water to survive.

Why is he dodging the number 1 reason it won't sell much: It's not available in all platforms.

Cashmoney007

This game will still sell well.  But it is going to be hard to sell more copies than COD games because Titanfall is not on all platforms.  It will just be interesting to see if people are looking for something different even though it is just multiplayer.

the13stuff

I am not against this title, but the multiplayer only console games will probably not reach the heights of their multi-experience competition anytime soon without some major backing and IP support. The title seems to be doing fairly low in pre-sales according to some sites for the Xbox one (considering it is an exclusive over the PS4), and that may be due to the availability on the 360 as well. With that said, I have no plans to get this.

How are we supposed to know the epic story behind titanfall with no campaign??? :/

thereal-15-cent

@Hells_rebelion Agreed. Does anyone actually buy CoD or Battlefield for the extremely short campaigns? CoD's campaigns are fun, but not worth paying $60 for, IMO. And Battlefield's campaigns are usually just flat out mediocre.

Hells_rebelion

@Godokuno_Dan No single player means it will fail? lol by that logic single player only games = fail.   It caters to a whole different audience and in this age of internet gaming I doubt it's a bad thing.

@Rob Connor PS2 is dynamic, open-world MMO combat. War rages all the time, when you are in the game and when you are not. You join the fight, you don't start it (or end it after specific time or number of kills). There are no matches, queues - just one huge war raging in real time, all the time.

It's awesome. Especially if you like teamplay more than Rambo-ing around solo style. Just yesterday, I counted more than 30 vehicles on our side in one fight (there were multiple fights happening on all 3 continents at the same time), I would expect enemy was close matched. Around 60 vehicles alone, and who knows how many foot soldiers.

From what I have seen so far, TF will have old-school match concept. There will be no grand scale of war - just individual matches with limited number of players, like CoD or BF matches are playing nowadays. Nothing wrong with that, but I do prefer PS2 way of things - it really feels like next step in FPS online shooters.

In addition, PS2 has jetpacks and mechs (not as cool and huge as TF mechs, I must admit... but nevertheless), also number of ground and air vehicles, as well as portable and stationary turrets. This ended up the only multiplayer game I'm playing right now, and I am deeply impressed with it. Have I not been playing it on PC, I would definitely rather have PS2 than TF on my gaming system, at least based on what I know of TF so far.

@Nathan Nandy Smith One cannot rage at nonsense.

Thinking of MAG, which allowed 256 players matches, and Planetside 2 (which is coming to PS4) - I cannot think of anything as complex ever released on Xbox, regardless of XBL theoretical and practical advantages.

I also cannot think how is Titanfall going to be more demanding in online than those two games.

I would expect EA liked original X1 DRM concept, though there might be paid exclusivity by MS involved as well. But now that MS back-stabbed EA with dropping DRM "features", I'd really be surprised not to see this game at least on PS4; maybe even PS3. Not unlike EA already did with Mass Effect games.

@liandrikonflict Honestly I would prefer to play Titanfall in LAN offline. I hoppe they have that option. I play fighting games online, but we have a few places in New York City where we meet up and play offline. It is 100 times better offline.  No lag induced BS.  You have time to react to things in realtime. monumentally  better experience.

SlayerX13
SlayerX13

@liandrikonflict Works fine with Tribes and Unreal Tournament and those are as old as dirt.

CoD does well because host advantage gives people a false sense of hope and achievement.. :p

@liandrikonflict If you buy for pc and you have a slow machine, sure, you will lag a lot. In any other case, not so much.

Godokuno_Dan

@MVan86 COD will sell over 40 million units this fall. TitanFall doesn't even come out until 2014, yeah right that's some awesome dent.

Nightdragonist
Nightdragonist

@Cashmoney007 EA will do that in PS4, probably some months after XBOX got that game. Since it's EA and Peter Moore still sits in executive chair.

And for the vs CoD. It'll be hard because CoD is a long running series.

Godokuno_Dan

@nikon133 TitanFall on PS4 Fall 2014. You heard it here first.   Zampella already hinted at it.

liandrikonflict
liandrikonflict

@SlayerX13 @liandrikonflict Well I can tell you I have a few hundred hours of playing Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 and the dedicated servers had pretty bad lag...but it was funny watching the Link Guns ammo curve so you could see exactly how bad the lag was and how to hit your target...

But still the fast moving vehicles were very hard to shoot and you also had lock-on weapons...but the targets I am talking about here in Titanfall are HUMAN targets that move fast.

The only people that this game will play good for are people who live down the street from the dedicated server with zero ping.

liandrikonflict
liandrikonflict

@Nikolajj The online lag i mention has nothing to do with hardware...it has to do with the internet connection and host advantage + Lag compensation or how far you are away from the dedicated servers + Lag comp....

example...Activision Transformers War for Cybertron...one reason the Lag was so bad because of the fast moving transformer vehicles making them near impossible to shoot even with 50mb connection...I assume the exact same thing will happen with the fast moving human targets of Titanfall.

MVan86
MVan86

@Godokuno_Dan @MVan86 Did I specifically mention "CoD Ghosts"? No, just the overall franchise.

If Titanfall sells well on 360, PC and X1 (especially the two Xboxs) then it might succeed in permanently taking a sizeable amount of CoD's player base, which would constitute a dent.

Godokuno_Dan
Godokuno_Dan

Have to call you out on that one bud: there IS no host advantage in titanfall. It uses CLOUD BASED dedicated servers, meaning about 300 dedicated computers working as one huge dedicated server for each game room. Comparing War. For Cybertron servers to titanfalls servers? Epic fail. WFC uses peer to peer, and it's the WORST NETCODE ever made, even for current gen standards.

Current gen servers are a generation behind what Titanfl and XBL is doing. Still

Awesome servers aside, I'm not paying $60 for half a game. Even if there is built in campaign in multiplayer, do you think I have time to listen to dialog or watch CGI cutscenes while the enemy is spawn camping my team? Fail. Never going yo work. I Will wait until this game is on PS4 and buy it for $40 on Amazon.

I kind of like it, it reminds me of ROBOTECH. If only there were a Robotech game that looked this good.....

Blazen702
Blazen702

With dedicated servers you're avoiding everything you just posted. There is a whole video from Respawn about it. Nice try though
