Titanfall won't feature day-one DLC or microtransactions

Respawn Entertainment says it doesn't want to "nickel-and-dime" players in its upcoming multiplayer-focused shooter.

by

Upcoming multiplayer-focused, mech-based first-person shooterTitanfall won't be getting any day-one downloadable content, developer Respawn Entertainment has said.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, producer Drew McCoy said the studio wasn't looking to "nickel-and-dime" its customers. When asked about Titanfall's post-release plans, McCoy said, "We're not talking about our plans specifically, but I can say we're not going to have day-one DLC, and we're not gonna have microtransactions or anything like that."

"We want to make sure people understand we're not going to nickel-and-dime you with microtransactions, and we don't expect you to buy a game, put it in your console, and the first day get asked to spend more money for more content. What you get on the disc is what you bought, and that's how we're going to do it."

Titanfall mixes agile, free-running pilots with heavier mech-based combat, and fills its multiplayer confrontations with dozens of AI NPCs to give players the chance to mop up some easier kills when they're not confronting other human players.

Titanfall will be released for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC in spring 2014.

Yeah it's a sad day for gaming when this makes news. They even explicitly state that THIS time they will not nickel-and-dime you with microtransactions.

If "next-gen" consoles keep trying to milk franchises with DLCs, MS and Sony are going to be sadly disappointed with console sales.  People are fed up with this crap.

They will wait till the next day to feature DLC

Just because you make day one DLC and do not release it on day one, does not mean you are any less of dicks for having disk locked content

From IGN and Amazon. There is an article on IGN saying that the PS4 is outselling the XBone 3-2. If you go to Amazon the PS4 has the number 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8th best seller and the XBone has the number 2 and that is it in top 10. Sorry but the XBone is losing pretty badly and this is among the hardcore that have good Internet. I don't suspect it will get much better when the casual with parents that don't have Internet.

Looking forward to the PC version sometime 2014 when more details surfaced about the exact requirements, gameplay features and their addon plans.

"No Microtransactions" sounds good, let's hope they won't just find another word for it instead.

I also hope that there'll be (unranked) offline skirmish scenarios, purely against AI bots too.
When they're populating the multiplayer maps with them, there's not much keeping them from taking that extra step I'd say.
Co-operative scenarios (PvE - players against AI) would also be interesting.

Though, if they're not also offering the server binaries at launch day so we can host our own servers for free and allow direct IP joins (instead of just their own "lobby" service) and perhaps even LAN mode, then I'll be picking it up in a cheap sale, if at all.
Won't "risk" throwing out money for a pure online experience and making myself dependent on their server availability.

Online gaming for sure is fun sometimes and as long as it's optional I have no problems with it.

This game looks awesome, but I'm worried about the "anyone can pick this up and play" attitude they got.  I hope they don't dumb this down to be a glorified Halo 4.5

This game will eventually come to PS4. And I will wait for it.

Thank god. I'm sad that I have to see the day where we feel relieved that devs aren't going to nickel and dime us due to it happening so much already. I don't mind DLC so long as it's free, but even then I feel sorry for people without an internet connection.

The  Mass Effect series used to be exclusive to Xbox and it ended up coming to Playstation. There is a strong chance that Titanfall could end up doing the same thing down the line.

There's nothing wrong with opening day DLC as long as it's free.

Man they might have to add MT's and day one DLC because it looks to me like they wont be selling a lot of copies on their chosen platform. I really hope they do the right thing and bring this out for the PS4 later down the line so they can make their money back from it.

Why is it that most of the awesome looking games have to be an MMO? :(((((((

First Destiny then The Division and now this!!!!!!!!! Shame really...I'm not into MP games :/

You know what would be news?  If video games just didn't have DLC to begin with.  When developers make a game, they think they can push a half-assed game like Dead Space 3, and then sell the ending for 14.99 as DLC.  DLC has been more of a detriment than a benefit for gamers.  While some DLC, particularly the ones with RockStar, have been stellar, the majority of DLC has been bullshit.   By getting rid of DLC for next-gen consoles, games will be better and everyone will benefit.  Games need to go back to expansion packs, not map packs.

But it will get week 2 DLC lol.

It's a shame more developers don't have this attitude.

So sad that this awesome game is going on a god awful console. Hopefully Titan Fall will release for the PlayStation 4 when their little deal with Microsoft is over. Titan Fall looks awesome.

This for me was the most exciting game coming out of E3. It will probably be the first game I buy for the Xbox One

Good move. Once the timed exclusive is over and it is released on PS4 I will buy a new copy to reward the devs for not nickel-and-diming gamers.

I feel the problem with multiplayer focused games is that after a period of time players move on to the another game and then it gets difficult to find good matches. Still I think this looks cool and I will get it for PC. Hopefully, someone makes a single player mode.

no we should appreciate publishers who think they're good by not screwing the gamer

nope, we appreciate publishers who publish a game with it's full glory, when it's complete and when it's a good experience

not like what EA did to cash effect 3, man that game was a piece of shit before even finishing it since it was short as fuck and had the most dull multiplayer expeirnce i ever had

so if a game publisher thinks that he won't time and nikel you makes him a "good" publisher he's dead wrong

it just won't make him a bad publisher.

@WingChopMasta They wont be "selling" copies on any platform. :p

Tens of millions of people will buy the Xbox One, and millions of people will enjoy this game. Count on it.

@Navardo95 Well you must be into them if you think all of them look the best. Plus none of the games you mentioned are MMO's. They just have seamless MP built in.

@mig-fulcrum The problem I had with COD (with my 360) was that everyone kept being held up on it for the whole year and no one would play any other games. If a Halo was released then it would stay around for a couple months then everyone went back on the Cod wagon.

@mig-fulcrum It has a single player story driven Campaign its just geared for playing with friends like Destiny.

@R4gn4r0k better to have an article about a game not having it instead of players raging about it again.

FragZone

@Gravity_Slave @BlueRaptor7 Yeah especially since EA is publishing TitanFall, and The last of us was published by Sony, and also because Respawn said themselves that a PS4 version of titanfall is a possibility in the future.

handspiel
handspiel

@Gravity_Slave @BlueRaptor7 No, we won't. Titanfall is published by Activision, a 3rd party. This means it is incredibly likely that it will wind up being cross-platform, as most companies have been going cross-platform to reach a larger market share. Last of Us is a Sony published game, which means it will never go cross platform. That would be tantamount to Halo or Gears of War going cross platform. Try to pull your head out before you speak out your ass next time. Thank you.

WingChopMasta
WingChopMasta

@malokevi @WingChopMasta You sound like you work for MS. Pulling optimism out of your ass won't make it so. There are over 140 million consoles sold over Xbox 360 and PS3 right now and super popular games top in at around 12 to 15 million and those are huge numbers. Sooo you can not expect them to sell a copy of Titanfall for each new Xbox One sold. That is what we would call a 'stupid' prediction. Not everyone is into shooters no matter how pretty they look.

DarkNeoBahamut

@Acekidder @mjswooosh third-party exclusive deals are too weak nowadays, don't be surprised if it's released for PS a months after the initial release.

@thequickshooter The way a business works isn't like how a person works. A business is meant to make money, and if they can cheat on consumers and get away with it they'll do it everytime. Competition, demand, etc. is suppose to determine their behavior not a sense of morality or fairness towards the consumer.

Companies need to know that we as consumers give a shit about this stuff and that they should listen every now and again instead of marketers, stock holders, or whoever else, and fairness is a viable marketing tactic.

malokevi
malokevi

@WingChopMasta @malokevi So what your saying is, if by the end of this generation the Xbox One sells 75 million... and 3/10ths of those people download this FREE TITLE... then 10s of millions of people will have played and enjoyed the game?

And, taking into consideration that projections of sales for next gen consoles are significantly higher then this gen.... what is the likelyhood of that NOT happening?

Thinking logically, with a little bit of cautious optimism, is not "stupid". Nor does it make me a Microsoft employee to take a hopeful perspective.

At least im not some pessimistic, cynical dickhole...

cough cough.

@DarkNeoBahamut @Acekidder @mjswooosh MS has been annoying with earl DLC and such, so don't put it past them if they flood developers just to keep it at their side of the battle. and with all of these bad -in my opinion- exclusives, they should keep this one home.
