Titanfall Getting More New Modes, But Dev Says It Needs to "Move On" at Some Point

"[A]t a certain point we've got to give some people a break and then think about where we go next."

Respawn Entertainment has a third DLC pack in the works for Titanfall, as well as more free updates--including new game modes--but it's going to have to find a point where it largely moves on from the game, according to community manager Abbie Heppe.

Speaking with OXM during Gamescom earlier this month, Heppe said, "Alongside the paid DLC maps, we have been doing free content updates, with the next one being on I think the 6th? So we do have some plans to release some more free content, we've got some cool new modes on the way. But at a certain point, we are going to have to wind down so that we can move on and do other things."

Heppe noted the number of updates the game has received in the five-plus months since its release, which have added new game modes, burn cards for Titans, the black market, and other new features, in addition to fixes and tweaks. "[S]o, yeah, at a certain point we've got to give some people a break and then think about where we go next," she said.

It's interesting to hear this discussed so openly; while it's inevitable that Respawn will eventually move on, it wasn't long ago that we heard Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella talk about how how he hoped the community would stick around for "a really long time" so that it could continue to support the game. What Heppe said doesn't necessarily mean the community has disappeared, but it's true that it hasn't been consistently huge on all platforms--hence the reason why certain playlists were cut on PC following launch.

Just because Respawn is going to move on from developing new Titanfall content at some point doesn't mean it'll abandon the game completely. "Obviously, if there's anything that totally breaks then yeah, we'll absolutely fix that," Heppe said. "But we're going to have to wind down and then move on. But we still have some cool stuff in the works before that happens."

Titanfall's third DLC pack, entitled IMC Rising, contains three new maps and will, like the previous two, be released for $10 on its own (in addition to being part of the season pass).

As for Respawn's future, EA has already confirmed new Titanfall "experiences" are coming, but what form they will take (and whether they will remain Xbox-exclusive on consoles) is currently unknown. God of War III creative director Stig Asmussen joined the studio not long ago as a game director, and will be helping to expand its horizons, possibly into the free-to-play and mobile spaces.

At what point would you be satisfied with Respawn ceasing development on new Titanfall content? Has it provided enough at this point? Let us know in the comments below.

Yes people, gamers still play titanfall. It is a great multiplayer shooter. Screw all the haters on this site. If you are not interested in titanfall then why are you here?

The Titanfall ($60, multiplayer ONLY) experiment is ending? Say it isn't so. This article is like placing a pillow to break the fall when the "official announcement" is made that no more new Titanfall content will be released.

I don't know why, but when I read the title of this post I think of a kid reading something... "getting more new modes"... Games should be getting more gooder when they're actually getting badder hahaa =P

Looks like some people didn't do their research before "buying" their copy. Games like these have a specific target audience.

Is anyone still playing this crap of a game! man i had such high hopes for it i guess it was just a one night stand at all!!!! Respawn shouldve concentrate on more Story based campaign coop elements for this unfinished Game even the Gamestop near me isnt accepting any more used titanfall copys for resseling it !!!!Respawn pls consider all these things for your next Game

Titalfall. a failure from start !!!!!

It's hard to distinct human players from bots in this game, especially from a distance. So it happens now and then that you get shot because you thought you just saw a group of bots. I do like the bots though.

I am waiting to see if they will add pilot bots, so I can play offline, or at least not rely on other human players. Not holding my breath though.

Giving up already? I guess thats what happens when you make a shallow game. Its very sad that the game turned out to be a flash in the pan, but I never expected anything more coming from EA. Its really important for consumers to start seeing through the massive hype that games are getting these days by marketing departments. I was convinced it was going to fail from the start, but I would have preferred not to be right about it, and to have been proven wrong with it being a spectacular game.

I think Titanfall's problem was that there was very little to aim for in the long run, after 10 hours of game time you had pretty much seen/used everything the game had to offer.

The gameplay and action are top notch though and I actually like the introduction of the bots, adds a bit of character and life to the proceedings.

Strange to me that many people here want Titanfall to have a single player campaign where in all available shooters(with exception of Metro and Halo) we have a boring 4-5h campaign and as soon we finish it,we never look back and play the multiplayer for weeks or months.

Does anybody think Evolve will really be any different? TitanFall is half of a game. (multiplayer only game). Evolve is the same. So expect people to get bored with Evolve about 3 to 4 months after release. Neither game should cost $60 at launch. Both should be $40.  If TF had been $40 at launch they would have sold more and still have people wanting to play it.

I liked titanfall and before it's release it was a very raved about game (people couldn't get enough). I'm unsure why there's so much hate now for the game.

My only small Issue with the game is I wish it had more guns lol

Here's the humor of it all, they're expecting people will actually pay for titanfall 2.

So they've realised when you release a half arsed, boring ass game on only one platform you don't get that many people playing?

Basically them saying sorry we need to break free soon to make sure the next iteration in the cash cow is ready. Even if Titanfall comes to PS4, I won't be going anywhere near it.

game itself online part is great. now trying to get mech unlocks for online. with single player game does not work. and also its on a platform of less then 6 mill

After five months they are already talking about letting pulling support.. That was fast. Time to abandon ship.

Plus, they were talking about making this F2P today as well.

Either way, I stopped playing this game two weeks into it. It was too shallow and lacked content.

Titanfall is a strange one and not something that was on my personal radar but I did give it a go on a friends XBOX1.

I found it practically unplayable and got bored of it after a couple of hours gameplay.

I'd already made up my mind about the game after reading reviews and watching the onslaught of gameplay footage and media hype but I thought I'd give it a chance first hand but my original decision not to go anywhere near it was pretty much vindicated 15 minutes in.

Yeah, definitely a love it or hate it kinda game and I know my friend really got off on it but even he rarely fires it up now. The longevity of this game seems to be very poor unless you're a total Titanfall nutcase, in which case, you'll still be playing it.

How you're managing to find interest in this game after 2 - 3 months is pretty amazing though.

M3o5nster

Basically they're ready to make Titanfall 2 and where they're going is PS4...

Maybe they'll give Xbox first grab at DLC or something. I prefer Destiny atm.

masterchieflara

Titanfall was, and is, great. I've had more fun with this game than any MP shooter I've played, mainly because it's a strategic game (ish), and 12 year olds threatening to r*pe my mother can't get their heads around the gameplay. Or you could wait for AW, and deal with the kids. Rage on.

Bowser05
Bowser05

Honestly with how much time I put into the game and how much fun I've had, I'd be content with a few more small updates and the last map pack. As long as maybe they have periodic content updates to keep things fresh from a small team or something, I'd be totally happy. I don't think they should totally give up, but I understand that they need to move on. Gaming isn't where it used to be. People don't have the attention span to stick around for a long time with a game as much anymore due to certain shifts in the industry, so it's not a viable business model in most cases anymore. It was commendable that they tried to do that, but I think they realized that it was folly in today's day of gaming. I look forward to the future of Respawn and what remains of Titanfall as well.

With other words:

Profit achieved, screw the players, let's move on to make more cash.

I played Titanfall and it was fun for one week, unless these guys actually try to make titanfall become a game (does not even have a single player campaign mode, only a troll multiplayer campaign that is not even a campaign), then for me at least that company will not be worth getting games from in the future.

"At one point, needs to move on....", lol, how about finish the game properly, than thank the people that wasted time on it, and only then move on?

If Halo had mechs, nobody would even be talking about Titanfall.  XD

Titanfall was a huge flop. Massive build up but didnt sell very well.

I wish it at least had a single player. The fact that I need an Xbox Live Subscription to even play the game was a massive let down!

This game is great so of course people are still playing it. If you want a story go play something else. Titanfall is for multiplayer shooter fans

seanwil545

@boominafito

I'm not sure what the folks at Respawn are thinking, I don't think they took any fan feedback whatsoever.

I think they just made the game they wanted to make and said funk the fans.

This announcement probably explains why the PC game was selling for $20 on Origin recently...trying to bait a few suckers.

I honestly hold very little hope for Titanfall 2, but I'm sure it'll be hyped to death and pre-ordered to high hell.

Rushaoz

@javalino Yea I stopped at level 29 lol got bored. I was astounded by this as I put 100s of hours into every CoD these guys made. With all the DLC and added modes though this might be worth jumping back into.

@javalino Careful ! You might piss off alot of Titanfall fanatics ! There are still people who play Titanfail ! A lot of hype for nothing !

alightningboldt

@julienz15 one of the roles of the bots is to distract you. So looks like it is working on you. If you play the game long enough you can easily tell who is a pilot and who is a minion

@sladakrobot Why waste your money on a mech game with only a multiplayer campaign when there actually are free-to-play fps and mmo mech games on pc? lol Titanfall is a rip-off.

daikkenaurora12
daikkenaurora12

@sladakrobot Then increase the length of the campaign.  Most developers know multiplayer is what gamers will focus on, so they go cheap on the single player campaign.

alightningboldt
alightningboldt

@spartanx169x. I guess games with only single player are only half a game too then right? And how many single player games hold gamers' interest for 3-4 months? Not many. You get way more play time out of multiplayer games. I paid $60 for infamous second son and I got about twenty hours out of it (also half a game by your logic). I have spent over 200 hours of enjoyment out of titanfall so far. I have gotten more for my money with titanfall than any game since skyrim.

boominafito
boominafito

@spartanx169

Man thats totally what i am thinking too these developers think gamers are idiots its just logic that we the gamers will react and punish them by not buying/playing add ons and maps for even more money all these dlc and season passes are just milking the cow tricks to me !!!!!

peterhorner1867

Most of the hate comes from people who haven't got the system to play it. It's a brilliant game.

alightningboldt

Yet none of them are as fun as titanfall. Content doesn't make a game enjoyable, gameplay does

corb77

It's estimated that Xbox one is more round the 8 million mark now, the last sales figures where from awhile back now.

It's still a lot less than ps4 though

alightningboldt
alightningboldt

Content is subjective. I think it had all the content it needs, plus they keep adding more. This game is actually deeper than most multiplayer shooters. Play the game long enough and you will start to understand the strategies involved

alightningboldt
alightningboldt

How some people find this game boring is pretty amazing to me. For multiplayer shooter fans, this game is amazing. If you like single player games only then stay away from titanfall obviously

alightningboldt
alightningboldt

If you want a single player campaign, play something else. Titanfall is a multiplayer shooter. That's all it was ever going to be. If you thought it would have single player then you should have done more research before buying the game. The only reason there is even a multiplayer campaign is to give context to why the two sides are fighting. It is not there to take you through a story.

If people hate it then that's fine it's there opinion.

I just find it odd that people loved the game at game conversions before it's release then people decided to hate on it after it comes out, the contrast just seems odd.

But each to there own.

I liked it, you hated it. It's all good.
