Titanfall DLC map Swampland screenshots and details released

Get a look at the third map included in the Expedition DLC coming later this month.

by

The third and final map in the upcoming Expedition DLC pack for Titanfall, Swampland, has been unveiled, complete with our first look at some screenshots of it in action.

The name of the map gives you the gist of it: Swampland is set in a swamp, albeit one with some man-made structures around. It's the trees, however, that are the stars, as detailed in a blog post written by Respawn Entertainment designer Chris Dionne.

"Initial layouts of the new Swampland added a bunch of IMC buildings, temples and massive infrastructure," he explained. "While that structure created clearly defined paths and gave Pilots safe havens and places to wall-run, the level lost its personality."

Click for the full-size version.

Dionne eventually realized the trees were what made the map fun. "I shifted the dense forest section to the center of the map, and kept three main structures as anchor points around the perimeter," he said. "This encouraged Pilots and Titans to pass through the woods as they moved from building to building. The final design push then focused on small changes to enhance those interactions - adjusting sight lines, making interiors more interesting to fight over, encouraging flow, and so on."

Swampland originated from an idea in the summer of 2011 of setting a level in a swamp. Work on it began but was set aside "for almost two years." Once the game was complete, Dionne decided to bring it back. The video below provides a brief glimpse at the design process that went into its creation.

Swampland is one of three maps in the Expedition DLC releasing later this month. (It's unclear if this release date is true for all platforms; GameSpot has contacted EA for confirmation.) The other two maps, War Games and Runoff, have already been detailed by Respawn. The DLC will be priced at $10, but gamers planning on picking up all three planned DLC packs can opt for a $25 season pass. In addition to the DLC, Respawn also plans on releasing a new 2v2 Last Titan Standing mode as part of a free update at some point.

Total sales figures for Titanfall, which was released on the Xbox One and PC in March and Xbox 360 in April, have yet to be released. What publisher Electronic Arts has revealed is that the game sold 925,000 copies at retail in the United States during March. It also announced a new deal this week that will see it publish new "Titanfall experiences" in the future

It's a shame the engine is so last-gen. Imagine Titanfall in Crysis 3 graphics. *sigh* Why are consoles still holding us back? Developers shouldn't design for the lowest common denominator. Titanfall can even run on a PC from 2009.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Futuristic cities and space stations are cool but they needed more organic stuff to balance things out

Screw the screen shots, give a damn release date already.

I like this trend, an individual story for each different map on DLC map packs.

Granted, this isn't really the reporter's fault, it's the fault of the game company that gives out details for 1 DLC in installments.

It very much reminded me of the one map from Killzone Shadow Fall.

This probably sounds contrary to everything the game is about, but I would totally love to see a pilot-only mode. It just gets waaaay to clusterfucked in some maps and I end up having to kill like 20 Titans.

I remember the old days, when the community made its own maps. Doom, Half Life, Counterstrike, countless RTS games, Then they realized that if they took the power to make new maps away from us and kept it for themselves they could make tons more money little effort.

I hate map packs, all they do is split up the community and make it harder to find a game if you do not own it. Just going to make the small amount of players just feel even smaller.

I love this game and i still play it :)

Titanfall is a "technically" solid game. I love the inclusion of the Titans. However, the game still comes across as a "CoD clone" to a degree. That is fine for some people but for others well....it gets boring after an hour or so of play. Won't be getting the DLC even though the maps look interesting. Just can't justify it based upon my own lack of interest already in the game overall. I do hope that this group of developers will focus on a slightly different game next time and still be a laser focused on the same production quality.

somebody call me when this game gets a two player splitscreen. Otherwise I'm not interested.

I got bored of this game after three weeks of playing. A few matches a day and it finally got old.

its not good unless they put kevin spacey on it

@Trickymaster  TitanFall is a competitive multi-player shooter with players vs ai vs environment running. They chose the Source engine (which is a PC engine by they way) for the best net-code. No engine beats the Source engine for that, and they wanted the smoothest online action. Oh and it's EA so they would use Frostbite. Expect TitanFall 2 to be on the Frostbite engine once it's netcode is up to snuff.

I agree. A pilot only mode would be great. They also need to do a hardcore mode like CoD.

Counter strike was a mod of half life. Modding is just another way of saying "I'm bored!". But incase you haven't noticed, PC gaming isn't doing to good. Guess that's why those were "the old days"

@gajbutler All true, it's hard enough getting into a game now, so there's no way I'm spending more money for less chance.

Ps4 got 1080p games and it look just the same as the Xbox one, and i got all systems. If the game is i don't care about graphics. So when you play games it got to look sooo good for you to have fun??

@Gruug I played Ghost on the Steam free multiplayer weekend and god it was shit! Playing as a pilot in Titanfall feels so much better than CoD. I would have said it was a CoD clone at one stage, but after playing Ghosts I can honestly say Titanfall is a FAR superior game even without the Titans. I think it deserves more credit than that.

@Gruug  How is it a CoD clone? I'm not contradicting you, I've just never played the game.

rob9999991
rob9999991

@Gruug Well, it is a bit of a COD clone seeing those who made this game made those... I stopped playing COD a while back, but even though this has bits and pieces of COD in it, it is far enough removed to where I am enjoying the experience. I doubt I will ever get to gen 10 but I may go up to 3...maybe 4.

@Jag-T1000 yep, we need more local multiplayer.  gaming needs to get back to what it used to be.  hanging out with friends, just having fun.

@poksmote  i haven't been paying much attention for the past seven or eight years, is kevin spacey a big thing now?

@Polygon_Pariah  I don't see how friendly fire is gonna work with the titans in hardcore. Smoke, Cluster and quad have very nasty splash damage, then you have arc grenades, and friendly rodeos.

sortajan
sortajan

@Polygon_Pariah  Modding is not another way of saying "I'm bored." Even while interested in and regularly playing a game I greatly enjoy loading up a creation kit and messing around, either for the Hell of it or to see what I can do and how I can contribute to make a great experience even better. Creating things is fun. We do it because we enjoy it. If we were bored we'd move on to another game.

PC gaming is doing well. It's regrettable that it isn't getting the big titles everyone's talks about (Infamous, Halo, Gears of War, all of that stuff), but nevertheless we're not without a list of games to play. I could go further, but I'd rather not succumb to your obvious attempts (conscious or subconscious) at baiting me into an argument on consoles versus PCs.

@shinjuki @gajbutler  Yeah me, I don't buy maps and neither does any one I know as we grew up on PC shooters, where maps should be developers by players using SDKs and should be free.

@adkcrazox  I know... I mean most of the games on the ps4 are indie games, which for the most part look like crap...

Gruug

@XNEXUS666X @Gruug I don't disagree with what you say. Yes, I have had fun playing Titanfall. As I said, it is a very solid game. But, I just get the feeling that I have done  this so many times in other CoD games (minus the Titans of course). I would have liked to have seen this quality of a game with the Titans but applied in somewhat more interesting way. What way? Don't know. I enjoy the first few games I get into but then it gets old. Perhaps just me but I would like to see something original.

@sortajan @GruugApparently any game that has online deathmatch play, that has human characters that use projectile shooting weapons, has perks and progression, and tracks players' personal stats and rates the performance of all the players in each match, is a rip off of Call Of Duty.  And Call of Duty is generic and a rip off of everything that came before it.

That's the common consensus, correct?

A lament.

Polygon_Pariah
Polygon_Pariah

No, I don't mean friendly fire (although they could do a richocette style where it hurts the shooter) I'm talking about NO mini-map, minimal HUD (except for in a Titan), no threat/damage indicator and NO kill cam in hardcore.

Any questions?

hoyholyhoy

@gajbutler @shinjuki  I agree, and I grew up with more player freedom in games as well, but I also don't know how to develop a fucking game, especially this fun, so I'd rather pay $25 for 9 maps and a couple modes, than wait for someone else to make the same game with more freedom. I totally agree that it segregates the already diminishing player base, but I'm personally fine playing any map (if it's not Training Ground)

@hoyholyhoy @adders99@adkcrazox Are you referring to the Wii U when you mention the console that had bucket loads of huge titles in their first 6 months?  Too bad they basically stopped with the games after that point...

hoyholyhoy
hoyholyhoy

@adders99 @adkcrazox  Because a console that's been out 6 months need a plethora of AAA, high-end, revolutionary, non-port titles. Please tell me, which console had bucket loads of huge titles their first 6 months?

It's a shooting game that you can prestige in that doesn't make it a cod clone I'm not really a fan of call of duty but not every game you shoot in is a cod clone or else game like battle field would be considered a Cod clone.

Gruug
Gruug

@spacecadet25 @sortajan@Gruug Actually, it was made by the same team that developed CoD. If you missed it, Infinity Ward, developed the first and several following CoD games. The two gents that founded IW were fired by Activision a few years. They formed Respawn Entertainment under EA. One of there "trademarks" in the CoD was the subsequent re-ranking once you reached max level in CoD. In other respects, it also has followed the same design flow of most of the IW CoD games. So yes, it is a sort of CoD clone no matter how you look at it.

By the way, I am not saying that being a CoD clone is a particularly bad thing. It is just that it is not a fresh design but rather a reskinned or reimagined game of the same genre to which IW was previously known for.
