Tip: Reporting Abusive Comments

A recent question we've been asked involves the way we handle abuse in the comments.

What to report: With our updated community rules we no longer moderate for profanity or inciting flames unless it contains personal life threatening statements or harassment about someone’s ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. Other items that we’ll moderate include advertisements, flooding/invasion behavior, illegal activities, grotesque, and sexually explicit content.

How to report offensive abuse: If you see someone posting content that falls under personal life threatening statements or harassment about someone’s ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability, click on FLAG and then select the offensive category.

How to report illegal activities and advertising abuse: If you see someone posting content that falls under illegal activities or advertising, click on FLAG and then select the advertising category.

If you have questions about the types of content we moderate, please post them in the Moderation Clarification forum.

I'm being flagged constantly for not doing any of what is listed above It seems the system is basically being abused by people who have personal issues with other users.

So what about the off topic, and disagree flags?  I think the disagree flag is somewhat pointless because just about every comment can be disagreed or agreed upon depending on the reader.  If someone disagrees, they will likely post a reply.  And as for the off topic flag, comment sections often go off on other tangents, but I am not sure they deserved to be flagged.  I am not sure what moderation is put into either of those, but it seems like they are not necessary IMO.

Thank you for bring this up. I hate to see people post rude stuff and think they got away wth it.

@ZOD777 Great question! We notified Livefyre early on that these are not flags we'd use but their other partners use them. For instance, if someone disagrees with a comment, staff can see what everyone disagrees about. The Off-Topic flag doesn't make much sense for us but it's there for other partners. We'd prefer there to be an illegal activities flag but maybe someday we'll get it.

@g1rldraco7 Yeah, if you see a new registrant being super aggressive towards others, go ahead and flag it. If enough people are flagging the same person we'll notice it sooner and we may consider it as a type of site invasion and a new registrant can get banned or suspended for that kind of behavior.
