Time magazine honors Spore, Wii Fit

A year and a half after it named Shigeru Miyamoto as one of its 100 Most Influential People of 2007, Time magazine has honored his work yet again. More specifically, it has named Wii Fit, the Donkey Kong and Wii designer's latest project, as one of its best gadgets of 2008. Though game critics had mixed feelings about the game and its balance board peripheral, Time heaps praise upon its fitness regimens, saying, "Weight loss has never been easier."

Time's official approval of the game industry doesn't stop there. The venerable magazine also ranked Spore as the 20th best invention of the year (out of 50), beating out such innovations as bionic contacts and the shadowless skyscraper. Dubbing the well-reviewed title its "Everything Game," the weekly talked up its protozoa-to-supernova scope and the seven years of effort put in by its creator, Will Wright. No mention was made of the in-limbo Wii edition of the game, the DS and iPhone spin-offs, the two forthcoming expansions, or possible TV and film adaptations.

However, not everyone has been as infected with Spore fever as Time. A group of scientists have taken offense not only to the way EA has marketed the title, but also to its flawed depiction of evolutionary biology. Wright also said religious and atheist groups have condemned the title.

Sure, it may not have the greatest practical impact on society, but you can't deny that it's amazing that video games have come so far. I mean, would you prefer gaming like it was in the old days? Where gaming was considered an underground hobby condemned as a lifestyle doomed to "becoming a fat nerd who lives in his mom's basement"? I for one, wholeheartedly welcome gaming as becoming a greater part of society, and if that means naming a creative genius one of the most influential people of the year and a revolutionary evolution editor as 20th best invention of the year, so be it.

Spore is fun indeed, but it does get rather repetitive after 24 hours or so of gameplay. advanced AI and fun gameplay cannot earn a spot in the best inventions list, I don't know what can.

I stopped taking them seriously after they made me person of the year in '06.

Umm... Ahhh... ...Okay. I bet the scientist and engineers who's inventions were beaten by a video game aren't ever going to read TIME magazine again.

@Shadow_Fax87 - Did the child inside you, that likes to create things, die? Did first person shooters, and MMO's eat it? I am not sure how people can give spore such a "boring" rating. It isn't a game meant to be a RTS or an RPG... its just so you can make something cool and watch it advance. Its mostly just a fun little editor, expansions will make it more. (No offense directly to you Shadow_Fax87) Its a concept game, it will evolve into something else eventually, but all games that kick off a genre are relatively simple. As for it beating those inventions, bad idea, and Wii fit, isn't anything new. In fact, its probably simplified versions of existing technology. In the end, these guys don't seem to understand spore was about innovation, not about fancy new technology that could revolutionize the world. If all these guys is do Wii, tops, for games... they have no right to judge them.

Half the comments are right in suggesting that having games go above more useful inventions for mankind is ridiculous, but this is the magazine that voted the iPhone as the top invention of last year, if I recall. Remember, the mainstream news media exists to sell itself. A bunch of other comments sorely lack perspective. There are more types of people than gamers, and Time's video game selection reflects games meant to appeal to the broader base. Yes, games with technical achievements are a triumph, for gamers only. Who else really cares?

A "Game" cannot deserve this honor. People at Time have gone crazy.

It was a best invention. Best at being overhyped.

Err... No? Spore is a mighty wonderful concept, but a horrible, shallow and milky execution. There's just about no redeeming point to the game right now, as it is akin to a boring selection of minigames crammed into one package and sold for the price of a full game. Maybe after the 24956 expansions, it'll be what it was supposed to be.

Wii fit is one of the best gadgets of 2008? That's seriously disappointing of Time Magazine post some crap like that. You're entitled to your opinion but come on, that's just pathetic. As for Spore, I'm definitely glad the game is getting the respect it deserves. So I guess we call it even then Time?

WOW of all the inventions that are out there that could help mankind. TIME choose two games to be on top of the list. Well done you guys well done. Next year put Wii Music on top of the Invention list and praise it for allowing gamers to create music. Time magazine what have you become.

I agree ZEPH1ZEN, only, Wii fit was not made for Gamers; in fact, most Wii games nowadays are not made for Gamers. This is partly because Nintendo can't compete with Xbox for the more serious gaming market, so Nintendo goes and gets the people who don't regularly play video games, resulting in alienating the people who really want to see something amazing from Nintendo. (The last amazing game I saw from Nintendo was Zelda OoT, and I don't think they're ever gonna be able to recreate a masterpiece like that in the Zelda genre)

ZEPH1ZEN
ZEPH1ZEN

@xblane.. its true that wii fit was innovative, but it has been over praised in the public. I personally think that the whole "fitness" thing about it is more of a gimmick, your a lot better losing weight through PROPER exercise, not hopping up and down on a balance board. Yes, the idea was somewhat innovative, but theres been balance boards before, and theres been games combined with weight loss.. its just that many of the previous products were made by small developers. Wii fit has been able to create such a stir because it came from such a big player in the gaming world. But you have to question, is what gamers want really this sort of innovation? We want our games to be innovative, to expand and give us new things ON TOP OF our previous gameplay experience, eg FPS shooters that now have online play. But to create a whole game centred around innovation? I don't think THIS is what gamers want. Unfortunately, its created such a stir its not gamers that decide the success of the game... its everyone. Innovation on this scale means that true gamers will have less innovative games built on existing models, more creative games to appeal to a wider audience. Final verdict = good for Nintendo's profits, bad for true gamers.

raahsnavj
raahsnavj

@xblane: and standing on a scale is innovative? So they put some cheap, not new, animations to go along with it. Yep, innovation...

xblane
xblane

While I'm not disputing how good games like Crysis, Far Cry 2 etc are... the great graphics and physics and AI arn't innovations.. they're not new, they are improved, but not new. They build on years and years of R&D, experience and incremental changes, its now new and different, just better... Pong as a game was innovative... not because the graphics where great because it was new and different. The fact that you can look at WiiFit and say, "is that even a game?" means that it is doing something innovative (you don't have to like playing it to appreciate the fact that it is innovative)

Grantsplace2004
Grantsplace2004

Nice to see Time praising the video game industry but they praise the most ridiculous things. Spore is okay but not better than bionic contacts or a shadowless skyscraper, thats amazing! And I mean come on, have any of the Time people even actually tried wii fit, itd be easier to lose weight by actually exercising. If they want something to praise how about Crysis and Warhead's incredible graphics and realism or the rock band games?

PandaBear86
PandaBear86

I'm surprised that neither Crysis Warhead or Farcry 2 have made the list of top inventions. If all the great graphics, realistic physiscs, advanced AI and fun gameplay cannot earn a spot in the best inventions list, I don't know what can.

Spore is great and all, but 20th best invention of the year? That's a bit extreme.

ronniepage588

Wow, Time Magazine is definitely out of touch. Spore sucks. its one great feature with a bunch of half assed games wrapped around it. LittleBigPlanet is a far better invention. these guys are ridiculous.

Zehydra
Zehydra

I don't think anybody has any legitimate reason to be offended by this game. This game was aiming for a fun gameplay where the players get to be creative. It wasn't trying to make a statement, nor was it trying to tell people that this is how the world works. All Spore is, is a fun, innovative toy that people can have fun with, nothing else.

100LBSofDogMeat
100LBSofDogMeat

time magazine was a credible publication? since when did i miss that meeting? and spore was not innovative (won't touch the evolution argument, but they're right)... it was purely five fairly designed games mashed into one monstrosity. it ripped off flow, civilization, and a few other games.

Lol, now that's funny. Atheist and religious people both don't like this product. It's about time they agreed on something.:) As for the scientists, come on, it's a game. Yes, let's put the whole of evolutionary theory into something a kid would play. Right.

Traveller10

The procedural animation, texturing and music in Spore were worthy of the 20th spot, but do you think they get a special mention: no. The game itself isn't worth listing in the top 100 games of this year, let alone inventions. A bunch of fantastic creators does not a game make.

putty121 jajaja, well actually wii fit is not an exercise simulator is a fitness manager, is innovative and useful for the user's, people that doesn't have time (like me) to go to gym have the opportunity to make some exercise before going to bed or sofa, that's why TIME reward it, cause it's useful. All the game's you mentioned are almost all the same shooter's crap XD, MGS4 it's the only one should be rewarded but GTA IV, san andreas is much better BY FAR!
