After spending a week in Los Angeles for various pre-E3 meetings, I returned to GameSpot HQ today and had a special treat waiting for me: preview code of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. Of course, you know what this means: I immediately tore into the game and created the most hideous player I could come up with to serve as my in-game duffer. I also played a few rounds trying to get a feel for what's new, including the updated putting system, which I'm still getting used to. It looks to be an improvement from last year, if only because it seems to make putting a bit more difficult, which is a good thing.

In the coming weeks, I'll be taking part in a Tiger 10 online tournament against other members of the gaming press. I'll keep you updated on my progress as it gets underway. I'm hoping that, once the game is released, we can set up some sort of similar event for GameSpot readers, if there's enough interest.

In the meantime, I'll bet some of you have questions about the game. If so, put them in the comments section below and I'll do my best to answer each and every one of them. Also, if you have any requests for screens, let me know and I'll follow up with another screen-filled post soon.

So, what do you want to know about Tiger 10?

Im curious to know, does or will the Ryder Cup ever appear in a Tiger Woods game or does the licencing differ for it?

@citizenking -- I'm not a huge Scott Van Pelt fan to begin with so the switch isn't that big of a deal for me. Besides, the hole flyover commentary is more interesting to me than anything they say once the hole begins. As for the courses, who knows? I'm bummed they took out Wolf Creek in the 360 game though, to be fair, it is in the Wii version. In fact, just because I haven't listed it yet, here's the course list for the Wii game: Banff Springs, Bay Hill, Bethpage Black, Cog Hill, Doral, East Lake, Fancourt, Firestone, Gary Player, Harbour Town, Hazeltine, The K Club, Kiawah, Oakmont, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Rivierra, Sheshan, St. Andrews, Torrey Pines, TPC Boston, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Scottsdale, Turnberry, Wentworth, Westchester, and Wolf Creek. That's 27 courses on the Wii. I wish we had that kind of variety on the 360/PS3...

Is the PGA Tour Season mode going to be fixed in regards to the pros' scores in any way? Last year it seemed to change with their scores varying with your golfer's rating. Is there more realism in this year's game where you won't have tons of pros shooting in the low 60's all four rounds?

Brian, do you know what EA are up to with the courses? We get the bland courses, eg Boston, East Lake, Firestone, etc, year after year. The interesting courses such as Wolf Creek, Prince, Bandon Dunes, Sheshan, etc appear once and are gone forever. Why? Can you throw any light on their reasoning for the boring over the interesting?

Apart from swapping Sam Torrance for the new guy, is there any difference in the commentary? The commentators (whoever they are) are only reading from a script given to them. So far with this game (TWPGAT XX) it's been pretty poor, whoever was saying the words, so Brian, please tell us that the scriptwriters have upped their game about 500% and for once it is intelligible and not repetitive!! When I've been hitting tee shots over 300 yards for quite some while, the commentator doesn't need to declare that I have no problem with my tee shots! Even worse, pitching out of the rough or a bunker has received the same comment now for as long as I can recall, with or without the addition that 'it's an art'. As for 'birdie-turkeys' and 'back-to-back-to-back', we need a rest!

@OnlookerDelay -- Gamernet looks pretty similar to last year. Here's the list of modes under the "online challenges" heading: free style, long drive, 9 hole showdown, 18 hole showdown, contest channel, single hole. @jshaw8 -- I believe only one person can play online tourney on the same console.

jshaw8

hey brian how many players can play in the online tournaments from the same xbox? some web site said that tiger woods 10 was only single player is that true?

OnlookerDelay

Anything new with Gamernet for Tiger Woods 10? I guess 18 hole challenges are still the maximum? I was hoping that they'd offer some blind Gamernet Challenges. I'd like to take on a 9, or 18 hole match, not knowing what I had to shoot to win. Then again, most of the 9 and 18 hole challenges are so goofily stacked that they feel silly.

@ilovegames134 -- I've tried match play but I don't think I've tied after nine. I either win or lose ;) I haven't seen the PS3 version but I'm guessing the trees move just like in the 360 version. Yes, pitching wedge is still considered an iron.

ilovegames134
ilovegames134

A few questions Brian: 1) Have you tried playing a Match play yet and if so, when you are tied after 9 holes does it still only makes you play the 1st 2 holes over and over? 2) In strong winds, I saw the trees were moving in a gameplay video, is this also the case on the PS3 version? 3) Finally is the PW still considered an Iron in the Club Tuner?

@OnlookerDelay -- PGA Tour Season mode is single player only. Would be nice to let people play it via local multiplayer though... @JamesRichards_ -- No Sergio Garcia. You can find the full list of golfers earlier in the comments thread.

Will Sergio Garcia be including in the new version?

Brian, I think what jshaw8 is asking is whether or not it's possible for more than one player to play offline Career mode tournaments together, in what we'd call season mode. I see this question asked over and over again on every TW forum I visit. It's apparently very desired feature... I surprised that EA Sports hasn't responded to this with an option to support it!?

mechberg
mechberg

@jshaw8 -- Nope, seems like the tournaments are online only. @Mitten123 -- So far, the Tiger challenges are pretty easy. There's a few tough ones, usually involving match play against good players but I've had relatively little trouble getting through it. And just because Tiger is available earlier doesn't mean his challenges are all incredibly tough. In fact some of the earliest challenges against Tiger are a breeze. @citizenking -- There's definitely some odd camera stuff going on, at least in the build I've played. Sometimes the camera follows the ball off the tee (or off your shot in the fairway), other times, it's a traditional TV camera angle. Makes it tough to judge your spin direction in mid-air (if you use the spin adjustment that is). The final version of the game might have fixed these camera issues, we'll just have to see.

Mitten123
Mitten123

How tough is it to beat Tiger in the challenges? Now that he has been made available earlier in the game...I dont want to be getting stuck early on against him constantly landnig theball within 3ft like in 05

jshaw8

hey brian!!! on the xbox 360 version of tiger 10 can you do offline multiplayer tournaments with people on the same xbox?

citizenking
citizenking

Are there any changes to the camera views of shots? It's particularly maddening that when putting, the ball dropping in the cup (or not) is at best a long shot, but is often off-screen altogether! The culmination of all our work on each hole is often unseen. TV coverage doesn't do that, and that is what the game tries to emulate, isn't it? The replay facility is good for looking again at hole-in-ones, etc, but not for an ordinary putt to hole out.

Any word on what clubs and products will be available in this years game? Any new brands licensed such as Titleist or Maxfli?

@gct810 -- I'm guessing the code I have is as close to final as it gets, so I doubt it will change significantly between now and release. @OnlookerDelay -- Haven't played in this weekend's Play the Pros tourney, as I've been wrapped up with UFC 2009 Undisputed. However, I did destroy in the online media tourney ;) @Gingerbloke -- I *think* you can only upload shots to the online service, I don't think you can save them to a memory unit.

Gingerbloke

BrianEk; is it possible to save replays of individual shots to your memory unit? I missed that on the last one. Thanks!

Brian, can you give us a report as to how you're doing in the Play-the-Pros media tournament? I heard Mike DeVault say that it was now underway and that he was monitoring scores. Can you tell that the difficulty of this tournament is tweaked up a bit?

Thanks for the response Brian. From your experience, how much do games change from the point you receive the preview code until it is released? I know that TW10 should be released early June, and it sounds like you have a very complete version of it. Thanks again for answering our questions.

on the Wii version:- Will you be able to set a different timeout period when playing online? Would it be possible to take one of your profile on the move so that you can play with your player even if you are playing at your friend's place?

@gct810 -- And yes, it looks like new shafts are applied to all clubs automatically.

mechberg

@gct810 -- Well, Daly's not in this year's game (that I know of), which is an outrage. As for Furyk, his extremely vertical swing isn't in the game either. Would like to see that next year.

i didn't really like 09 because of the way you had up your skills. If you didn't get a great shot on the green or whatever you are trying put the ball you would lose some skills even if you hit every shot before or after great. and the whole training thing was kinda lame too..hit the ball and get it in the circle, the odd time it would be hard to get in there but 9 times out of 10 you would never miss. and the putting well everyone probly feels the same way i do...Wayyy to easy my rate on 09 is better then one its 0.80.... soo what i wanna know is if they change the way you gain still and if putting is hard because it didn't matter wwhere on the green it landed it was always going in the whole.

I have two quick questions. Do any of the pro golfers have unique swings this year or do they all swing like Tiger (take Furyk or Daily for example)? In TW '08 they all were like tiger, but in '07 they were unique. And to add to this, do they let you create a swing like in '07? Also, and this is minor but I am picky, when you buy a shaft in the pro shop this year, do they make you apply it to all the clubs? I always though it looked weird when it forced you to have a fancy graphite shaft on a putter or on your irons. It would be nice if you could just put an upgraded shaft on your driver. Thanks in advance!

@BrianEk, it's tough to describe what I'm speaking of here. I realize that you won't be playing with an animated AI player in season tournaments, but you will be seeded in the field according to score. If I'm -3 after 36 holes, I'll be paired with someone who is -3 for the 3rd round. MIke just says you'll be playing the round at the same time as the other players in your group. He may mean that in only the most figurative of senses... IOW, you may have to look at the leaderboard after the first hole, and see who else has a score posted through 1 hole of play. It would then follow that it is that player with whom you are "paired". I was hoping that you would get some sort of live HUD information on the players in your group, even if you don't see them playing the hole. You would have noticed this had it been the case, I would imagine.

mechberg
mechberg

@OnlookerDelay -- I might be misunderstanding what you're asking but I've only played a couple of events on the PGA Tour schedule so far and haven't technically been "paired" with anyone. In other words, it's still just my character swinging out there; no need to wait for an AI golfer to take a shot. However, I will say that when playing PGA Tour events in your single player career or in online tournaments, you will periodically see scoring updates flash on the screen, alerting you when a player has moved up the scoring table. It happens frequently enough to keep you up to date but not so much that it becomes annoying.

@Brian, comforting info on the difficulty in dialing in the putt meter! I still plan to turn it off right out of the gate (I'm a sadist!). Anyway, another ? for you. Mike DeVault has said more than once in his blogs that when playing in an offline season mode tournament, you'll be paired in a grouping with a player nearest your position on the leader board, and that "the player will be playing the round at the same time as the two other AI golfers in their group." Have you seen enough of the season mode tournament play to be able to describe how the AI players in your group's playing progress and/or scoring is presented? I wondered if they might not use the telemetry tracers that are used for simultaneous multiplayer play, but that would be counter to the tournament atmosphere they're trumpeting for 10. At the very least, I'm thinking there might be a group listing over on the right side of the screen that shows the AI players in your group, and the current number of strokes taken on the hole? I may be reading too much into this, but I am curious... thanks!

will next gen consoles like the PS3 be able to run a linear gauge without jumping (like a 1990s PC was capable of). Or are the "Developers" at EA incapable of such a simple task?

To get straight to the point. What's more fun, Tiger 10 Wii or the 360 & PS3 versions?.

@OnlookerDelay -- You can definitely see rooster tails, which is kinda cool. As for the difference between soft/hard greens, I think there is some difference but I wouldn't say that it's huge, at least in my experience. I think you're more liable to see a big roll on a hard green rather than big bounces. I'll pay attention to it some more and let you know if anything stands out. As for putting, you can definitely screw it up, even with the meter. The meter doesn't lock in your back swing at any point, so it's very easy to swing too hard (or not hard enough).

crow_bird69
crow_bird69

is the wii version much different than the x box and ps3 ?

OnlookerDelay
OnlookerDelay

@BrianEk, thanks for the comment on the slowness in the rain. The vids are showing rooster tails on some putts in the rain! From your comment I take it you can't see a difference in the receptiveness of a soft green versus a hard green to a long approach shot? I was hoping that a hard green might result in a couple of hot bounces or two. As to the putting meter, is it harder to achieve the desires putt strength in Tour Pro versus Balanced, for example? Some of the videos seem to suggest that you can meticulously and deliberately bring the putt strength to exactly the desired level with impunity! I'm hoping that tempo variances will result in some undesirable results.

@xMobster187x - yes the wii version will have online play just like last year but now with tournaments I also have a question of my own. since it's now confirmed wii motion plus will be packaged with the wii version, do you guys think nintendo will sell a wii sports resort that dos not come with the peripheral for a discount price? I'd hate to be stuck with two wii motion pluses and only one remote
