Three from the Genesis added to Euro Virtual Console

Wii's downloadable game service welcomes Sonic Spinball, Story of Thor, Vectorman to its new release section.

by

Sega is taking center stage in this week's batch of European Virtual Console releases for the Wii. A trio of Genesis games constitutes the new offerings to Nintendo's downloadable game service. The slate of titles includes an appearance from the console's biggest mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, the debut title of one of the system's last mascots, and a mascot-free action role-playing game for good measure.

In Sonic Spinball, players take control of the titular hedgehog as he is launched into a series of pinball levels. But unlike an ordinary pinball game, this one features sprawling playfields laden with enemies, chaos emeralds to collect, and boss battles. Sonic Spinball is available for 800 Wii points and features support for up to four players.

Released in North America as Beyond Oasis, the action role-playing game The Story of Thor casts players as Prince Ali, bearer of a golden armlet with the ability to summon spirits. The golden armlet has a silver counterpart created for destruction, and Ali must traverse the land to keep the silver armlet from being used for evil. The Story of Thor is available for 800 Wii points.

Originally released in 1995, Blue Sky Software's Vectorman is an action platformer known for its steep difficulty and prerendered 3D graphics. Set in 2049, the game takes place on an Earth abandoned by humans, with the robots left behind battling for control of the planet. Vectorman can be purchased for 800 Wii points.

Beyond Oasis ...clearly the BEST action-adventure maybe even RPG for Sega Genesis. So awesome game. It realy stand far higher then most sega games. Segas Legend of Zelda definately. Beyond Oasis (Story of Thor), Dune, and Shinning Force. Best Genesis games. (Screw Mortal Kombat eveyone kows how epic it is anyway!!!) I only now realise that its graphics animation and combat movement variety (could even jump and crouch) was BETER That that of Zelda on super nintendo!! OMF! It also felt more coroful and positive dono xD OMG!

Sweet the Virtual Console is really turning out awesome. I remember Vectorman too, I always was horrible at that game. It's a very challenging platformer..

I've heard that Beyond Oasis is great. IGN gave the VC version an 8, which is pretty good. Vectorman's kinda lame, and Sonic Spinball is terrible.

Beyond Oasis, to this day, remains one of my favorite games ever.

I really wish they'd make the VC the same across region. These releases aren't great, but Europe has some great ones just as NA has some that Europe doesn't. I just don't see the point other than making entire continents agitated?

Sonic Spinball - OWNED! Vectornman - OWNED!! Many times, too bad i didnt win that 50k prize back in the day with the lucky cart. Story of Thor - ehhh never got to it. Now if they would just release Kid Chameleon so i don't have to dig out my Genesis, I'll be happy!

I'll give Sonic Spinball a miss since I own the Sonic Mega Collection, yet for some reason I downloaded Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which is also in that collection. D'oh. Story of Thor I remember borrowing from a friend and really enjoyed it, so that one may be worth another look, and Vectorman was always one of those games I wanted to play, but never did. The Virtual Console has been a pleasurable experience so far, and I'm always looking forward to the future releases. I remember reading on the Nintendo web site that they have plans to make Wii Points available as trade ins for the Stars you earn through the VIP scheme, so I'm waiting patiently for more information on that. :)
