THQ stock tanks on Homefront reviews

Publisher ends trading day down 21% as analyst says sub-80 Metacritic average has spooked investors.

by

The first-person shooter genre has enormous potential for turning a buck, but investors are under the impression that only the best survive. With THQ's Homefront hitting store shelves on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this week, the reviews have started to come in, and investors apparently don't like what they're seeing.

Capitalism may not be on the side of THQ with Homefront.

As of market close today, THQ was trading down $1.25, or 21 percent of its value, to $4.69. Analysts have been quick to point to Homefront's critical reception as the culprit for the steep drop. The game has thus far accrued a 72 Metacritic average on the Xbox 360 and PC, while the PlayStation 3 edition has fared slightly better at 76.

"This score is a bit of a disaster for THQ and the share price today is reflecting that," Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey told Reuters. "The market is a quality-driven market, (and) you need at least a score of 80 and above on Metacritic to do well."

Developed by Kaos Studios (Frontlines: Fuel of War), Homefront is a story-driven shooter set after North Korea invades and overruns the continental United States. The single-player component sees the player as a member of the American resistance fighting the Korean People's Army in an attempt to regain control of the ruined nation. The multiplayer modes are set earlier, letting players engage in military scenarios from the invasion itself.

THQ has previously indicated that it is planning to expand Homefront first with add-on content and then a full-blown sequel. However, as part of an event during this year's Game Developers Conference, THQ executive vice president Danny Bilson cautioned that games need to prove their success first before any future developments move beyond the concept stage.

Check back later today for GameSpot's review of Homefront.

This is why I hate capitalism. Its all about greed and making big money fast. Metacritic doesn't mean jack-crap. The game has gone on to have decent sales and a pretty loyal fan base. Now THQ has closed the studio. What a bunch of garbage.

At the time I write this,Homefront shipments suggest double platinum sales are imminent. Shoulda' bought THQ stock.

The campaign, while built on an interesting idea and in an intriguing setting, disappoints. I still enjoyed it, maybe because I love Red Dawn so much, I am not sure. However, I really like the multiplayer. Its nothing groundbreaking or game changing, but it is just plain fun. That's my two cents, at least.

Yay, another generic shooter sinks like a stone. May be the industry will start to realize that flooding the market with generic shooters is just plain stupid. One more nail in the coffin for generic shooters, today is a good day indeed.

Wow. My buddy bought the game and we've been playing the multiplayer since im the one who has internet and all i can think is that the industry tends to judge any shooter that isn't an established billion dollar franchise really harshly. I've been playing BF, COD, and Halo from the start and i don't know.. Homefront feels a lot better than those games- the kills seem really gratifying (even tho it uses the 'ole cheap aim assist that COD made famous). The graphics are kinda blahh but aren't terrible. the controls are tight and the traditional persistent ranking system is there for those who really care about that. bottom line: I think Homefront is a competent shooter and I think that the industry is fulla idiot lemmings. correction: Nothing beats BF. nothing not even this.

Oh yes THQ on PS3: Saints Row 2, right? That was a very bad game. More bugged than the most bugged Tomb Raider. The Homefront line is quite funny but the Monty Python can do much better I'm afraid.

Don't know where to put this: are they gonna make any more maps for BFBC2? There's still this one I like very much with a bridge in the middle of a small medieval type town at night which is missing.

@The_CJ_Dude Except you can't compare it to those historical events. North Korea has a history of being a hostile oppressive and extremely secretive state. They've supported many criminal and terrorist organizations. It's believed that North Korea is responsible for much of the drug trade in Japan. They've sold nuclear secrets to enemies of the United States. There is no reason for anyone to trust North Korea. North Korea also relies heavily on foreign aid just to feed its own people. A famine in the 90's killed around 3 million North Koreans. Most North Koreans are still malnourished and not long ago, the North Korean government was encouraging its people to eat grass and tree bark since they were hoarding all the food for the military. There's also the fact that a single Ohio class nuclear submarine carries 24 Trident II ballistic missiles, each of those carries four 475 kiloton warheads. That's enough to wipe out most major urban and industrial centers in North Korea.

The_CJ_Dude

@stabby_mcgee It really isn't that ridiculous. Did people see Hitler gaining power of Germany and then most of Europe? No. Did people see one man's assassination causing a world war? No. When you think about it, this isn't as ridiculous as you think when compared to real historical events.

stabby_mcgee
stabby_mcgee

The premise of the game is so ridiculous that I think they probably should have gone the Red Alert 2 and 3 route and made the game a fun parody. If they wanted to make it more realistic then they should have had the balls to make China the bad guys.

The game looked stupid from day 1. I don't think an add on or a sequel will save it. Over hyped and plain boring. BF3 as the guys mentioned looks very nice.

i still don't understand how call of duty black ops got a 9 and absolutly nothing negative was sad about the game in the review. it's a 7 at best. small linear maps, terrible spawn system, and sound design sounds like they used an iphone app. used to love call of duty until i played battlefield.

darkwarriorz71

i dont think we need to worry about call of duty for much longer. BF3 gonna make call of duty a small broken boring tony hawked shooter at best

I enjoyed the game. I tend to like short games; I have so many games to play that I don't have time to sink 40+ hours into a single game, unless it's amazing. The end fight sucks though.

Glad the 15 people I convinced to return the game and terrible review I wrote had an (albeit a very, very small) effect. Hopefully this will slightly push quality over hyped sh!t in fancy packages... time will tell though.

I hate it when a game that could have been so awesome, falls short. I hope they get a second chance to fix it and make some good game play with the already great story.

Well what do you know. The suits might prove uselful to us gamers after all. I think its a good thing that the market sells off on bad products. These days you have to do more for gamers to get us interested. I hope this is a trned that continues, anything that improves the quality of games rather than the quantity is welcome.

It's a shame to see that games are stealing sales from others just by carrying familiar namesakes (cough, Black Ops, cough).

@stjimmy15 There's several reasons that isn't plausible either, but I guess maybe it is for people who don't look at/ didn't study International Relations. Don't mean that to be condescending, just kinda how you will always get complaints from people who work in a subject for something being inaccurate no matter what you do as a writer.

Going to buy some THQ stock lol because the game still sold well and they can only go up from here with Ghost Recon launching soon and the next AC they already announced... Not to mention the Rainbow Six they are probably working on... Right after all of those I will sell out because that guitar game is going to suck and a sell like ass... Make meh some moneh. :D

@BloodMist Im sorry but Gamespot and their staff lost ALL credibility when they fired their main, well respected, well known, HONEST Reviewer for being honest and giving an overly hyped game a terrible review...not the review Gamespot wanted. I go by not just one player review, but atleast 20, because they game for fun and a Player Review on this site, is a hell of a lot more non biased, then half the the crap Gamespot puts out.

The problem is that there is too much FPS with the same generic story. Another reason is hype then the big letdown by critics.

Good. Get used to it THQ, keep on making games nobody asked for. Also keep adding just one little irrelevant thing to Raw vs SD , the only franchise keeping you away from tanking, only to take it out the next year... See how long that same game from 2001 keeps you in the black in the next decade... I'd give encouragement but I'll keep that for companies who actually listen to what their customer want...

Heres my complaint, we as gamers are united as a hole in so many things, but when a game like cod mw1 comes out some of us split and say "awesome this game rocks!! OH but its campaign is short but the multiplayer is great!". Then We have cod mw2 releases and we split agian and say "the multiplayer is great, but the campaign is so so!" I dont get it we as a hole hold all the power in deciding what makes a good game? But a strange thing happens when a game like "HomeFront" drops we start say things like hey the multiplayer is great but the campaign is real short so im not going to buy it! So we will buy cod games that the campaign is reeeeaaaaaaaally short but love the multiplayer and harp on it as being an instant classic, but when a game that comes that is similar some of us rip it apart and say we are not going to buy it because "I heard was it bad!" If we all did that what games would be produced from other companies, the answer, none! I bought homefront and i believe its very good, me personally I think the multiplayer is better than the cod games but that's my opinion. All Im trying to say is give as many games a chance as possible dont take peoples word with weight until you yourself have the said game, that way you can for yourself if its bad or good.

The bigger-budget higher-scoring games often don't have the personality/gameplay/atmosphere of the 7.0-8.0 range. Also they tend to be far prettier but faaar shorter.

falconclan

This is a bit of a sad fact in the gaming community. It seems the base feels only 9.0 games should be made. Frankly, some of my favorite games have gotten lower reviews, I love blockbuster games, but sometimes they lack the personality of midrange games. I haven't played homefront yet, I purchased it, and it remains unopened because of time restrictions, but even through the negative reviews, I've gotten the message that Homefront offers a robust world with a good story to boot. It may be short, but there are signs that future plans for the series could be amazing. Alas, those plans will likely never make it to fruition because of dude-bros who need their cods and such. I like just about every genre, but the whole activision blockbusters only thing is killing me inside. Also, it would be a travesty if THQ shut down. They make their fair share of crap, I'm sure, but they also make some really great games like Red Faction, and Saints Row. Not exactly top tier of intellectual gaming or anything, but good fun.

This is why I wait and buy cheap...and buy used...so the studio learns a lesson and gets NONE of my money. What's that? The studio will go out of business? Guess I'll have to watch movies instead.

I'm with mrboone. These idiots hyped up this game for the singleplayer, yet didn't even include one (I don't count a 4-hour campaign as a singleplayer experience. That's a tutorial.). Now, they're paying for it because the people are already sick and tired of this crap from kotick&goons. Honestly, I'm sick and tired of this rediculously stupid emphasis on multiplayer. Really..it's not that important. Especially if the singleplayer story is supposed to be the prime objective.

foxglove1313
foxglove1313

Let me get this straight, the game moved 375,000 units or over $22 million in sales and that's a "bit of a disaster for THQ." What planet are these a$$holes living on? In a recession with 10% unemployment that sounds like a win. Particularly when it concerns a game with the preposterous premise of North Korea invading the US. These investors need a reality check, sounds like their expectations are stratospheric for a no-name IP launch.

@Gorilla97 I used to like the phrase "real gamer" but then I realized it was terribly ignorant and terribly pretentious. Nevermind that your remarks slip into the tinfoil hat zone, you generalize far too much regarding the myriad number of critics and reviewers. And you base fact on what can only ever be speculation until any one of them comes out and says "I hated this genre" or "I was bribed". And even if we assumed all reviewers were terrible, lazy biased people, we still need to take into account what Bloodmist just said. You honestly suspect Gamers to be less biased? These are the same people who will criticize the 360 just because you have to disk swap on two or three games. These are the same people who attack WoW and Grand Theft Auto even though not just reviewers but gamers love the games. No, gamers are no less biased than reviewers and will inflate scores when regarding something they like. Not all, but enough that you can't trust them a 100% by themselves.

BloodMist
BloodMist

@Gorilla97 In that situation nobody with the slightest intelligence would take the review seriously. You also wouldn't have a job for long with horrible taste like that. ;D As for the gamers, they tend to give inflated scores to complete mediocrity, so they're far from more reliable.

Viron_Berserker
Viron_Berserker

@Taegre Hence multi-player, but unfortunately that doesn't float everyone's boat.

Gorilla97

@AncientDozer But you see, review writers are not real gamers anymore. They don't necessarily game for fun.. they game, because an editor throws a game on their desk and tells them to play it and write down their thoughts. Now if I was a writer and an editor threw down the latest Fallout game on my desk, I'll probably play it and be as happy as can be and give it a more deserving score than I should. BUT, if that same editor gave me the newest MARIO game - I HATE Mario games - and I'm forced to play it because of my JOB, I'm probably not going to be very fair in my review. Now, all those gamers reading my review - they have no idea I'm not a Mario fan, so they'll read my bad review like sheep and let that dictate rather or not they're going to purchase the game. Then go out and buy the glitchy as ever will be Fallout game I reviewed, because I put it over as being the greatest game ever. This is why reviews are a JOKE and why people should NOT listen to them. Real GAMERS should play the games and share their thoughts online, because it's the GAMERS who know rather or not a game is good or not.

To be honest I would rather have a good story that is 5 hours long then a bad one that lasts forever. If you have a problem with short stories go play rpgs, their stories won't shut up. And to the people crying CoD rip off, that is an insult to Homefront to compare it with that massive turd. And all your criticism is the same as yoir comments, generic, derivative, and a disappointment.

The campaign wasn't meant to be 5 hrs. Anybody with half a brain knows it. It was purposely cut short. When u employ such underhanded methods to reap profits this is what u get. Its not like only multi-player FPS are meant to exist.

@ blkstr89 I completely agree. This game has reeked of CoD bandwagoning since it was announced, and it's reaping what it's sown. Generic, derivative, and not deserving of anything good. Hopefully this will be an example for other devs; that this sort of crap isn't going to fly anymore.
