This In-Game Minecraft Phone Can Make Real Calls, Take Selfies

The Minecraft community continues to impress. We've seen things like The Shire from Lord of the Rings, the entire country of Denmark, and Notch's $70 million Beverly Hills mansion recreated in Minecraft. But now, a phone has been created in the game that is actually capable of making real calls and more.

Verizon Wireless partnered with YouTube personalities SethBling and CaptainSparklez to build a new web app called Boxel and special code that allows players to make video calls, take selfies, send texts, and more from inside the game. Development on the project spanned nearly three months--and you can see the results in the videos embedded in this post.

"Users can open up websites, take an MMS selfie using a selfie stick, and even make a video conference call to a cell phone--all visualized within Minecraft's standard blocky interface of course," Verizon said in a statement. "And they've open-sourced the libraries so that users anywhere can replicate the trick themselves."

CaptainSparklez, whose real name is Jordan Maron, recently purchased a $4.5 million mansion above the Sunset Strip that's not too far away from the home that Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson owns.
