Thief reboot arriving February 25

Eidos Montreal's upcoming stealth game coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC early next year.

The upcoming cross-gen Thief reboot will be on store shelves on February 25, 2014, it was announced today in the game's latest trailer.

Previously, the stealth game from Eidos Montreal was targeted to launch sometime in 2014.

The February 25 release date for Thief is for all versions of the game: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. A Wii U version is not in development.

Thief may not hit store shelves until next year, but the game will be on display next week during Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, Germany.

The first 2 games were the best, they kick today's games asses.

It's been a long time coming and what I saw so far looks great. I hope they made it where Garret can climb more things. That was the one and only part that frustrated me in the first ones. It looked like you could climb up but couldn't. Can't wait.

Level of dumbing down for mass appeal may be very strong with this game

I just can't get excited about this one.  Every Thief so far has been a case of close, but not quite.  Maybe the reboot will be the one to get it right.

Here's a hint, Eidos Montreal, stealth needs to a valid option throughout the game.  Forcing stealth builds into active combat is a bad thing.

I predict SE will be disappointed with its sales.

The budget for this game is so massive. They built a physical bow to replicate the main character's weapon. That speaks to the culture of spending in regards to this game.

I don't see it falling flat, however, like RE6. This is probably going to be one of those games that everyone buys for next gen consoles because of limited library at launch, IMO.

Some things point in a bad direction, especially for old fans, but I'm betting I'll like the game when it's released. It's not exactly my favourite genre, but I got hooked when I played the Thief 3 demo and now own the game (uninstalled though). I'll probably play Thief 3 and then Thief 1 & 2 before getting this one though.

If you liked Dishonored you are probably looking forward to this. If you liked the original Thief games you probably enjoyed Dishonored.

God people are idiots.

I played the original Thief when it was new, and have no particular fondness or attachment to it. I simply don't care if the reboot follows in its footsteps or not. I want a good stealth game. Since Eidos Montreal developed DE:HR, there's a good chance I will like what they do with Thief.

It remains to be seen.

Looking forward to this, though keen to see how much of an emphasis is placed on the sneaking and stealth side, and not just being all-powerful and easily able to take down every guard on a level.

I'm really looking forward to this, looks really cool, even though I never played any of the previous Thiefs

I'm hoping the Trickster and the Hammerites are involved in some way, but from what I've seen the only threat is a corrupt leader and a plague. That sounds a lot like Dishonored, there's even a mission set in a brothel.

For a full immersion, you need to steal this game from torrents. Or from a store, but that's for an achievment.

They always have to thrown in a little comment about something not coming to the PiiU..

@SilentAssassin Epic, that's a huge order SA.  I've been a fan since the original Thief.  Thief, Thief II, sure those games were epic, and I even dug all the stuff after Looking Glass went under, but epic?  Only to hardcore fans like ourselves.  Thief Deadly Shadows only musters an 8.3 on GameSpot.  And to a point I agree.  When compared to the gritty story and immersion of character I felt in the first two games, it fell short.  However, it was still Thief and was a lot of fun.

@soulless4now It's by Eidos Montreal, the company who made DX:HR and are so against the grain with the rest of what SE does that I have faith in them.

Roanark

@The-Neon-Seal You're kiddin' right? Dishonored has an entirely different story and game-play. Yes, they are both action stealth games with a grimy setting but if that makes them that closely related than let's face it... Thief would be a rip off of many other games,

johnrayjr

@The-Neon-Seal

Because it's a stealth game?

C'mon. There are lots of stealth games. I loved Dishonored. I'm also looking forward to Thief. I have no idea why anyone would try to put down one for the sake of the other.

@faizanhd I'll make the prediction that either one day you'll give a damn that the company that saved the video game industry in the 1980's is on the verge of collapse, or you'll never know what it is to be a true gamer.

@4le_breVVer @edinko Lets hope but I wouldn't hold my brath. The X-ray vision like from batman arkham city is already a terrible addition to make it as simple as possible

soulless4now

@The-Neon-Seal Doesn't mean much since they're still owned by SE. They may see layoffs in the future if the game doesn't live up to their sales expectations.

The-Neon-Seal

@Roanark @The-Neon-Seal Just throwing it out there because people who know little about games keep saying Thief is a rip-off of Dishonoured. Also, to counter the above replies, I have played Thief I-III (completed both I and II) and have also played through dishonoured and yeah, it is Thief but with a story about revenge and elements of Bioshock tacked on. I'm not saying it's rubbish (I really enjoyed it), I'm just annoyed that people keep banding around this non point that Thief ripped off a game fifteen years its junior, a game I may add, that had very little its own other than the whole sub-background thing about the Humans killing all the Whales.

The-Neon-Seal
The-Neon-Seal

@johnrayjr @The-Neon-Seal Read below post for a more comprehensive reply. Also, I very much liked Dishonoured, and that is because in atmosphere, world and gameplay it is almost identical to Thief.

@19James89 @edinko THey want it to have mass sales appeal which means in their eyes as stupid and simple as possible

19James89
19James89

@edinko A lot of games seem to be adding that and it does ruin the game, it makes it so simple. That was one of my gripes with The Last of Us.
