Thief is 900p on Xbox One, but Eidos Montreal explains why that's OK

At least it's not 720p.

Uh oh. Thief will run at a native resolution of 900p on Xbox One, Square Enix has confirmed to GameSpot. The PlayStation 4 version will run at a native resolution of 1080p.

Thief is the latest in what is becoming an increasingly long line of third-party titles that feature a lower native resolution on Microsoft's platform. At 900p, Thief has the same resolution on Xbox One as Ryse: Son of Rome and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Other titles, such as Call of Duty: Ghosts and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, run at a native resolution of 720p.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Thief will run at 30fps.

"We can't really see the difference," says Thief game director Nicolas Cantin to GameSpot when talking about the two versions. Many of the developers at Eidos Montreal maintain that the two versions are almost identical when running side-by-side.

The developers also insist that a lower resolution has no detrimental effect on the gameplay of Garret's adventure. "For me, in my mind, the PS4 and the Xbox One experience: it is the same thing," says Cantin.

"I think it's becoming too big," said Cantin when asked if the ongoing argument over native resolution is becoming a bigger issue than it should be. "To see it as a big topic? I really wonder why at some point."

Cantin maintains that working hardware specifications is a "limit" but that it's more of an engineering problem--and that the creative team did not find developing for Xbox One or PlayStation 4 a constraint. "The Xbox [One] version is really good, it's really looking great, as is the PlayStation 4," he adds.

Ultimately, resolution will "never degrade the game experience," Cantin says. "I can assure you that."

Thief will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on February 25.

Playing the Xbox One version and seems fine to me. I really don't miss those 180p's.

ahhhh, poor console owners.  I can play at 2560x1600, and I CAN notice the difference between the two as I've seen it in person on both and the xbox just looks more jagged, a little more aliasing, etc.  But I don't play two feet away from my 60 inch TV either so you won't notice it unless you are right up close, like a computer monitor.

My 2 year old PC plays this game in 100+ frames on 1080p could probably play  it 1440p with 60+ frames if my screen supported that resolution. Also i heard PS4 version gets really choppy in some parts. But really i don't see how the consoles can already be so limited, every game that comes out should be 1080p 60fps imo unless the game is like a movie. I mean i don't really mind that say Beyond Two Souls only runs in 30 frames since thats basically a movie. But every game with fluid gameplay should be 60 frames.

I can assure anyone who is curious: the XBox One version looks horrible. It is not the 'art style' it is the feel and look of a game from 5 years ago.

That's a lot of double-talk to keep from getting MS angry.

I just hate when companies like Sony and Microsoft say their console can do one thing, but end up not ether being anywhere near what it can do, or it just can't do it and it was only said to sell consoles.

Happily own a PS4, But...You wont see me doing that Playstation Now service when Sony explained why the PS4 couldn't emulate the older games but hey, They managed to find a way to "stream" Emulated Games, you just have to pay for it.. Now if Playstation Now is apart of PSN+ then thats cool. But Im not dropping money on two services.

I owned an Xbox One for two days, tops, before getting rid of it. I personally think the X1 has some great games coming out for it but sadly, I just can't get behind this generation. Just not a fan of the controller.

Gamespot: we ALL get the point that the PS4 has better performance and specs than the XBone. I got it like in 2013. So why keep bringing this up in EVERY game? Is there a hidden agenda here or are you just looking for controversy and flaming comment sections?

Everyone should follow the example of Kevin VanOrd and read his article on Final Fantasy. Now that's joumalism. Not this constant idiocy.

I was wondering what was going to happen when the actual "next gen" games started coming out..... from what was being said before the consoles came out this is what everyone should have expected.  Then again: I'm not sure how much different it will make... I'll have to see both side-by-side to judge.  Would expect the PS4 to look better, though.  It's kinda funny, though, that the XBone people kept saying "well, technically our console is MORE POWERFUL" but apparently most games have lower graphical resolution on the XBone.

strothers101

Id rather have a lower res and higher fps...bring on 720p and 60fps.

dmdavenport
dmdavenport

Uh oh, Gamespot ignores developers comments and brings up the phony 1080p issue. If  their Sony Masters told them the PS4 has more plastic and is blacker than the XB1 they would say that, too.

What I have played of this game so far, will haunt the deep recesses of every true Thief fans dreams. Firstly! Let gets this out of the way. This game is NOT! Thief.

1.The stealth is too easy. And the AI doesn't do it any favors.

2The mission structure is amateurish. I have played out better Thief like mission in Elder Scolls Oblivion or Skyrim.

3.The interface and weapon select is cumbersome. Swapping arrows and items feels unnatural and sluggish.

4.There is no jump button. it's automated, until whenever you approached certain objects.

5.The AI is DUMB!. Their reactions and just their general behavior is laughably bad.

6.The stomach churning fear of getting caught is GONE!

7.The graphics engine feels and looks dated. Loading screens between areas, heck even opening doors are long and frequent. The engine also has NO physics. Everything in the environment is static. Texture pop in and low detail distance especially on last gen systems is unacceptable. It's almost as if they purposely made it look bad on last gen system to justify next gen. There are much better looking games out there.

8. I miss EAX. Enough said about the sound the better.

9. The haunting, creepy, Thief atmosphere is not existent.

Dishonored or even Elder Scrolls is more of a Thief sequel then this will every be. And that's just sad. This game would have been barley acceptable 5 years ago. We Thief fans have waited such a long time for a sequel, and we are left with this hand holding, cutscene riddled, QTE spamming, automatedly controlled  stink-bomb. When the foul smoke has cleared, fans will be comparing this to Hitman Absolution. Another game that tarnished a franchise almost irreparably.

Sucks that the XB1 isn't getting the resolutions it should. I'm sure it will down the road, but as of right now, the PS4 is the machine to own if you look at it from a raw power standpoint.

I'm wondering the same thing Nicholas, what is it with Gamespot's obsession about the resolution?

dribblesbarbax

Its sad that at the beginning of the last generation we were fooled into thinking that the consoles were fully HD. When in fact practically everything bar some arcade games were running at 720p. Now a completely new generation of console has arrived 8 years later and still they cant reach 1080p on most games. Microsoft has been caught with its pants down.

On 125" screen 900p vs 1080p IS noticeable and I'm glad for those that have little TV's that can't even tell the difference between DVD's and Blurays. Ignorance is bliss as they say. This is a PC purchase for me so I'm sure it will be good.

@mattchatwin  but look at the price of the console compared to pc. no doubt pc is superour compared to console users but not everyone has 1000+ dollars to pay for a gtx 780 , i7 4770k or in that area so just chill and enjoy what you have and also pc dosent get the features like the kinect and other things

@notfrylock1987  Get a gaming PC, sounds like it'd solve most of your problems -

  • Backwards compatibility: Check (hell you could play your PS2,Xbox and Cube games!)
  • True HD gaming: Check
  • No marketing BS: Check (well, some but only from the graphics card vendors)

@SofaCama

So....where were you all last generation when Gamespot was Fanboying all over Microsoft and completely shitting on Sony and Nintendo?

Gamespot is ran by Fanboys, for the Fanboys and they just jump on the bandwagon once they find out whats "Cool" this generation. Doesn't surprise me, so it shouldn't really surprise you.

JimmeyBurrows
JimmeyBurrows

@strothers101 Depends on the game, not everything needs a higher framerate... But given the choice I certainly wouldn't chose the same framerate at a lower res (this is assuming the PS4 version can hold it's framerate.)

mundus

@Garm31

1. Haven't played this game on anything but master, but so far in my opinion the stealth is certainly better made and more challenging than Dishonored which i probably the only other game you can compare with this in recent times. And you can even put it on custom (which can make it even harder).

2. There is more variance in the mission structure than in Elder Scrolls thats for sure. They are linear but there is always more than one way to reach the goal. For example in the 3rd mission first time i did it i went in by the front door, and just sneaked up directly to mistress room, however the 2nd time i did it i found a completely different entrance and i poisoned everybody inside with opium which made the mission a lot easier (i've had this game for over a week and i played through some of the missions twice to find all the secrets).

3. Played on PC i'm used to this reminds me of pretty much every game in this genre.

4. Yeah i don't like this the roll button and the jump button are the same, they should be 2 different things.

5. Better than Dishonored imo and i was surprised that the guards doesn't move in a specific pattern in this game like in every other stealth game, don't get me wrong they have a specific route like in every other game, but sometimes they stop midway, making it harder to get around them.

6. Not sure what you mean by this, getting caught in this game feels just as bad as in any other stealth game, worse probably cause the combat is so bad.

7.I have a SSD so the loads don't bother me that much, i don't like the "cut scenes" when you open windows etc though.

8. The sound in this is not terrible but not great either, you can at least here exactly where the guards are just by listening to their conversations.

9. I seriously think this game is on the same level as Deadly Shadows better even, but it no way near as good as first 2.

Game has its flaws, but its not that bad, you make it sound like this is the worst game ever and that nobody should play it, i would put it on the same level as Deadly Shadows, which is miles worse than the first 2, but still better than just about any other stealth game in first person.

@dribblesbarbax  you talk like they had an accident but no they had no intentions of giveing us a truely power gaming system. go back to e3 it was all about everything in one box and when this didnt happen due to public back lash they were left with a lame ass gpu that is like from 2008

ShadowNeverDies
ShadowNeverDies

@wookiegr  This dude is talking out of his ass saying that the difference is like DVD to Blu Ray....ok guy. Also as someone who has one of those ridiculous tvs the best looking game of the launch titles was Ryse of Rome which was at 900p and omg it still looked the best because I don't freaking know art design, graphics engine, visual tricks. The game still was meh but it was the best looking and it wasn't at 1080p naturally so....yeah. It all looks good and when you are actually playing the games unless you are literally just playing for graphics and not gameplay you aren't really going to notice the difference. It's why I remember N64 games looking way better than they did.

McGregor
McGregor

@wookiegr  I think the difference is noticeable on a 60" tv. At least to me it is.

Rage56
Rage56

@wookiegr are you kidding me. How many average middle class people have a TV bigger then even 60" or 70" let alone one as big as 125". People barely notice the difference between 720p and 1080p so there will be even less difference at 900p vs 1080p. I think people are just looking for things to gripe about. I have neither one of the new consoles, but have played both and enjoyed both. I will wait for 1tb hard drive, stronger library of games, and a nice bundle with a game or 2 at a cheaper price before I get either console.

mattchatwin
mattchatwin

@clarkthepirate @mattchatwin  and your TV is the cost of my Rig that plays those games.  My point is that the PC is still a more competent and flexible platform with no compromises. It just sucks that there is a gap at all between the two consoles in performance from the same developers.  Whats fantastic is that they literally are now PCs in their own rights and now the lag of porting over games for consoles to the PC is null.  That's very exciting to me as a PC enthusiast.  And its better for console owners as well, since now PC games can be ported to consoles much easier.  I like that there are better options now to share, with Steam boxes coming on board too, this will just get better for all of us.

@Kunakai @notfrylock1987As long as you don't care about console exclusives. It is strange how many PC gamers insist on "I don't care what I play, as long as I play it on true HD!". Um... OK.

But I do care, thus PC and PS3... and PS4.

@notfrylock1987 @SofaCamaRemembering how many X360 fans were coming to PS3 topics to gloat how this-and-that multiplatform game runs/looks better on X360, I think this is mildly justified.
