Thief is 900p on Xbox One, but Eidos Montreal explains why that's OK

At least it's not 720p.

Uh oh. Thief will run at a native resolution of 900p on Xbox One, Square Enix has confirmed to GameSpot. The PlayStation 4 version will run at a native resolution of 1080p.

Thief is the latest in what is becoming an increasingly long line of third-party titles that feature a lower native resolution on Microsoft's platform. At 900p, Thief has the same resolution on Xbox One as Ryse: Son of Rome and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Other titles, such as Call of Duty: Ghosts and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, run at a native resolution of 720p.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Thief will run at 30fps.

"We can't really see the difference," says Thief game director Nicolas Cantin to GameSpot when talking about the two versions. Many of the developers at Eidos Montreal maintain that the two versions are almost identical when running side-by-side.

The developers also insist that a lower resolution has no detrimental effect on the gameplay of Garret's adventure. "For me, in my mind, the PS4 and the Xbox One experience: it is the same thing," says Cantin.

"I think it's becoming too big," said Cantin when asked if the ongoing argument over native resolution is becoming a bigger issue than it should be. "To see it as a big topic? I really wonder why at some point."

Cantin maintains that working hardware specifications is a "limit" but that it's more of an engineering problem--and that the creative team did not find developing for Xbox One or PlayStation 4 a constraint. "The Xbox [One] version is really good, it's really looking great, as is the PlayStation 4," he adds.

Ultimately, resolution will "never degrade the game experience," Cantin says. "I can assure you that."

Thief will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on February 25.

this is how you made a pc gamer angry, post an article about resolution comparison between xbox and ps, and pc gamer will screaming :

Playing the Xbox One version and seems fine to me. I really don't miss those 180p's.

ahhhh, poor console owners.  I can play at 2560x1600, and I CAN notice the difference between the two as I've seen it in person on both and the xbox just looks more jagged, a little more aliasing, etc.  But I don't play two feet away from my 60 inch TV either so you won't notice it unless you are right up close, like a computer monitor.

mattchatwin

@clarkthepirate @mattchatwin  and your TV is the cost of my Rig that plays those games.  My point is that the PC is still a more competent and flexible platform with no compromises. It just sucks that there is a gap at all between the two consoles in performance from the same developers.  Whats fantastic is that they literally are now PCs in their own rights and now the lag of porting over games for consoles to the PC is null.  That's very exciting to me as a PC enthusiast.  And its better for console owners as well, since now PC games can be ported to consoles much easier.  I like that there are better options now to share, with Steam boxes coming on board too, this will just get better for all of us.

@mattchatwin  but look at the price of the console compared to pc. no doubt pc is superour compared to console users but not everyone has 1000+ dollars to pay for a gtx 780 , i7 4770k or in that area so just chill and enjoy what you have and also pc dosent get the features like the kinect and other things

My 2 year old PC plays this game in 100+ frames on 1080p could probably play  it 1440p with 60+ frames if my screen supported that resolution. Also i heard PS4 version gets really choppy in some parts. But really i don't see how the consoles can already be so limited, every game that comes out should be 1080p 60fps imo unless the game is like a movie. I mean i don't really mind that say Beyond Two Souls only runs in 30 frames since thats basically a movie. But every game with fluid gameplay should be 60 frames.

I can assure anyone who is curious: the XBox One version looks horrible. It is not the 'art style' it is the feel and look of a game from 5 years ago.

That's a lot of double-talk to keep from getting MS angry.

I just hate when companies like Sony and Microsoft say their console can do one thing, but end up not ether being anywhere near what it can do, or it just can't do it and it was only said to sell consoles.

Happily own a PS4, But...You wont see me doing that Playstation Now service when Sony explained why the PS4 couldn't emulate the older games but hey, They managed to find a way to "stream" Emulated Games, you just have to pay for it.. Now if Playstation Now is apart of PSN+ then thats cool. But Im not dropping money on two services.

I owned an Xbox One for two days, tops, before getting rid of it. I personally think the X1 has some great games coming out for it but sadly, I just can't get behind this generation. Just not a fan of the controller.

@notfrylock1987  Get a gaming PC, sounds like it'd solve most of your problems -

  • Backwards compatibility: Check (hell you could play your PS2,Xbox and Cube games!)
  • True HD gaming: Check
  • No marketing BS: Check (well, some but only from the graphics card vendors)

nikon133
nikon133

@Kunakai @notfrylock1987As long as you don't care about console exclusives. It is strange how many PC gamers insist on "I don't care what I play, as long as I play it on true HD!". Um... OK.

But I do care, thus PC and PS3... and PS4.

Gamespot: we ALL get the point that the PS4 has better performance and specs than the XBone. I got it like in 2013. So why keep bringing this up in EVERY game? Is there a hidden agenda here or are you just looking for controversy and flaming comment sections?

Everyone should follow the example of Kevin VanOrd and read his article on Final Fantasy. Now that's joumalism. Not this constant idiocy.

notfrylock1987
notfrylock1987

@SofaCama

So....where were you all last generation when Gamespot was Fanboying all over Microsoft and completely shitting on Sony and Nintendo?

Gamespot is ran by Fanboys, for the Fanboys and they just jump on the bandwagon once they find out whats "Cool" this generation. Doesn't surprise me, so it shouldn't really surprise you.

notfrylock1987
notfrylock1987

@Kunakai @notfrylock1987@SofaCama

How so?

Seriously. This website has years archived onto it, Go back and look at their early PS3 Articles and compare them to the 360. gamespot hopped on the Sony wagon after Last of Us and when PS4 was shown off at E3.

nikon133

@notfrylock1987 @SofaCamaRemembering how many X360 fans were coming to PS3 topics to gloat how this-and-that multiplatform game runs/looks better on X360, I think this is mildly justified.

A bit of Karma moment never hurts. Some people might learn a lesson. Many won't.

I was wondering what was going to happen when the actual "next gen" games started coming out..... from what was being said before the consoles came out this is what everyone should have expected.  Then again: I'm not sure how much different it will make... I'll have to see both side-by-side to judge.  Would expect the PS4 to look better, though.  It's kinda funny, though, that the XBone people kept saying "well, technically our console is MORE POWERFUL" but apparently most games have lower graphical resolution on the XBone.

strothers101
strothers101

Id rather have a lower res and higher fps...bring on 720p and 60fps.

JimmeyBurrows
JimmeyBurrows

@strothers101 Depends on the game, not everything needs a higher framerate... But given the choice I certainly wouldn't chose the same framerate at a lower res (this is assuming the PS4 version can hold it's framerate.)

dmdavenport
dmdavenport

Uh oh, Gamespot ignores developers comments and brings up the phony 1080p issue. If  their Sony Masters told them the PS4 has more plastic and is blacker than the XB1 they would say that, too.

hairdie

cant really see the difference this means they kind of can see the difference lol

McGregor

Sucks that the XB1 isn't getting the resolutions it should. I'm sure it will down the road, but as of right now, the PS4 is the machine to own if you look at it from a raw power standpoint.

Blue-Sky

I'm wondering the same thing Nicholas, what is it with Gamespot's obsession about the resolution?

ShadowNeverDies

@Blue-Sky  How about every site, everyone is hyping this console war talk because they are feeding off the fanboys for hits/revenue.

hairdie

@Blue-Sky   you know the way iphone users dont look at the resolution of other high priced phones and wish they had that 1080p screen and that octacore cpu? yeah baby! thats what im talking about ilosers

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

Its sad that at the beginning of the last generation we were fooled into thinking that the consoles were fully HD. When in fact practically everything bar some arcade games were running at 720p. Now a completely new generation of console has arrived 8 years later and still they cant reach 1080p on most games. Microsoft has been caught with its pants down.

hairdie
hairdie

@dribblesbarbax  you talk like they had an accident but no they had no intentions of giveing us a truely power gaming system. go back to e3 it was all about everything in one box and when this didnt happen due to public back lash they were left with a lame ass gpu that is like from 2008

I would really enjoy a great game in 32 bit than a gorgeous mediocre game

Bellum_Sacrum

Good job reporting this Gamespot, now I know which is the superior version so I can buy the better console.

tightwad34
tightwad34

Who freaking cares about a little difference in the numbers of resolution? Only thing that matters is that you enjoy the game. I highly doubt people will be saying the game was just a little less fun because of a minute difference that no one would truly notice if they didn't look for it thanks to journalism pointing it out. Great job again gamespot. Not to mention adding fuel to an unnecessary fire.

SpicaAntares
SpicaAntares

Those considering the PC version should know that whatever place you buy the game from it ends up on Steam. While Steam sells the game supposedly 10% less than MSRP, like many online retailers, a few sells the game for even less. Bought the game at 25% off at Get Games. You can try elsewhere and might get luckier. It's the difference between paying $37.50 for a PC version versus paying $60+ for the console version.

wizardboyus
wizardboyus

i have to admit that i see a huge difference between 720p and 1080p on my television, however i haven't seen 900p yet so I can't make that comparison as I don't have an xbox one. probably won't ever see 900p anyways since i got the ps4...if it really is a minor difference then I don't see what all the fuss is about...but 720 and 1080 look very different to me sooo..

Shagittarius
Shagittarius

Once you have purchased an Xbone or PS4 the resolution argument is meaningless, it's too late.  For all the cry babies complaining about the spec wars why would you buy an inferior and more expensive machine to begin with.  Don't get me started on the buggy useless multimedia features of the One either.

rainbowjack
rainbowjack

@Shagittarius  "why would you buy an inferior and more expensive machine to begin with."

That's why you don't buy consoles for gaming.

stuff238
stuff238

Still does not change the fact that if you have the option of purchasing the game on either console, you would get the PS4 version as it is the best version. Simple as that.

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

I'm starting to feel sorry for every developer having to explain why game "X" runs at one setting for the XB1 and another setting for the PS4.

From the outside looking in, it seems "obvious" that many developers are having a harder time working with the XB1, RIGHT NOW. The PS3 had some of the same issues when it first released, and we can see that the issues were quickly fixed once they had more time with the systems. Just about everything we're seeing right now was in development years ago. If we still see the same differences in 2015, then I'll say there might be a REAL problem.

BARRICADE_28
BARRICADE_28

"a lower resolution has no detrimental effect on the gameplay of Garret's adventure". Eidos, we already know that 900p vs 1080p has no effect on gameplay, but it has an effect on how sharp the game's graphics look on a TV,

tecnogaming
tecnogaming

@BARRICADE_28  Just don't try to reason with them.  As posted below,  if it is exactly the same, why did they maintain the 1080p native in the PS4 in the first place,  why don't they just do 900p on both consoles?.

They are ridiculous, they just can't stand a simple argument.

tecnogaming
tecnogaming

@ThatPjYouKnow21 @tecnogaming @BARRICADE_28  Not at all. I work in the gaming industry, i review games, have a magazine for gaming reviews and my brother is one of the guys behind free to play games and work in a developer company.

I don't pretend to know nothing about how to code a game, i'm just debating common sense here.

The title clearly says "EIDOS explains why 900 is ok"  and really don't say absolutely anything as to WHY.

Obviously is not something that will brake the game, but an explanation as to why should be more than adecuate.  This sounds just like "jusft conform,  guys at PS4 will see the game sharper, but that's ok, see" ?

ThatPjYouKnow21
ThatPjYouKnow21

@tecnogaming @ThatPjYouKnow21 @BARRICADE_28  First of all, 900p IS ok..... Literally, I don't see the problem with it. While you're playing your video games, do you seriously pay attention to every pixel? I enjoy playing my games.. You people must be empty if somebody else having a slightly better gaming experience (or vice versa) ruins your day.

@tecnogaming @BARRICADE_28

I think they know that more is better in this case.  But they are trying to say it is not game breaking.  Money might be involved in what they say too.  lol
