There's a new Age of Empires game! But…

It's a free-to-play mobile title, coming to iOS, Android, and Windows Phone this summer.

Microsoft and developer Klab Games has announced Age of Empires: World Domination for mobile devices. Yes, it's free-to-play.

Players get to pick between armies, such as Celts, Vikings, Franks, and Huns, and try and bash each other's brains out with an all new battle system that's been redesigned for mobile. It's probably going to end up being like Clash of Clans, isn't it?

"Recreate history with your hands," booms the game's announcement trailer. Other than being confirmed as free-to-play, there's no mention of pricing information, or whether the game will make use of in-app purchases, or an energy timer, or basically anything that ended up ruining Dungeon Keeper.

The new Age of Empires should be out this summer for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

Why that need of, each time something turns F2P, it becomes childish and cheesy like if Disney was behind it? not even Dead Island was safe from it.

I dont understand why EA wants to alienate their core fanbase and receive hate-mail this much. Do they REALLY make so much money with these "Pay-to-win" titles, that they dont care about the public opinion?

its odd that developers fail to see that if they make a good game we will basically throw money at the screen : /

only retards will support this mobile game shit with their money

The difference with this game is that you give it your credit card, and then your villagers go out and mine your money from that.

They really butchered Age of Empires, didn't they? The art direction in the last one put me off completely (and other features), now this FTP mobile POS? Yeah, I'm not buying, Microsoft.

I'll play a mobile game when there is LITERALLY nothing else to do. Such as waiting at the airport or waiting for something in general. Even then, I'll exhaust things like work on my laptop, people watching, and sleeping before I'm inclined to spend a couple of seconds with a mobile game.

Who cares? It's all been downhill since Age of Kings.

@BradBurns

All the characters are just silly stereotypes. Vikings with horns? Oh what a surprise. Sexy joan d'arc? I didnt see that coming. Very very non-historical nonsense-game.

@leikeylosh  I agree as long as you don't include portables in that category.

Phone games stink..

@lion2447  Fresh innovative departure from the mining and resource collection in most traditional games.

@DrKill09  You should watch the latest jimquisition. It's not the developers that want to make things like these, it's the publishers that are ran by complete idiots who are tempted by the money mobile F2P games and COD make.

@DrKill09  EDIT: As the article mentions, Clash of Clans.  I think a lot of these types of games are trying to replicate its massive success.  There's that middle ground market of mobile users that want something a little more deep.  They're willing to put in more effort than the typical mobile user, but still want that much higher level of convenience.

hystavito
hystavito

@DrKill09  They're not made for "us" :).  Of course, they often fail to draw a new crowd too, effectively killing off the IP :).

R4gn4r0k

@XIntoTheBlue  The art style of Online bothered me at first too. But I've grown used to it. It's just a cartoony version of AOE.

This... this looks nothing like it though. The battle system looks nothing like AOE, neither does the base building and the characters look like they came out of a bad anime.

@Darkhol0w  Yeah, they royally fucked over RollerCoaster Tycoon fans, too.

@drybones41  Don't worry, the mobile game fad will pass, just like the Wii and Guitar Hero.

Casuals will see something else shiny and stop playing games.
