"There's a lot of life left" in Gears of War, says Microsoft

Corporate VP Phil Spencer says he understands the "importance of the franchise" to the Xbox platform and to gamers.

The Gears of War franchise has a lot of life left in it, according to Microsoft Studios executive Phil Spencer. Speaking with Kotaku, Spencer said Microsoft is in "active" discussions about the future of the franchise, but stopped short of confirming a new entry in the series.

"I'm a huge fan of the franchise," Spencer said. "I want to continue to work with Gears. I think there's a lot of life left in that franchise. We had an internal discussion on it even yesterday. It's something that's active in discussion about what we can do with Gears."

Gears of War fans eager for a follow-up to this year's Gears of War: Judgment may want to get comfortable, as Spencer said "there's nothing even pending that I'm holding to announce." That said, he explained that the importance of the franchise to gamers is not lost on him.

"I understand the importance of the franchise to the Xbox platform and to gamers--I'd say gamers first. It'd be great to do something forward with that franchise."

Since its inception, the Gears of War franchise has been exclusive to Xbox and PC. Spencer declined to say if this status would change going forward, deferring to Epic for that question.

"It's Epic's franchise," he said. "You and I both know that. I can't make any assurances about anybody else's franchise. It's Epic's game and we have to talk to them about a partnership and what they want to do. As you know, you probably know right now they're more focused on other areas of their business right now."

Gears of War creator Epic Games has no announced projects beyond the PC-exclusive Fortnite. Gears of War: Judgment was principally developed by Poland-based subsidiary Epic Games Poland (formerly known as People Can Fly).

Also in the interview, Spencer discussed the Xbox platform's status in Japan, a region where the system has never been hugely popular. He said Microsoft has closed deals for new titles, described as "full Japanese games" that are more substantial that downloadable projects.

We have signed some things in Japan that we haven't announced that we'll announce in... '14 so that people get to hear about support in Japan," Spencer said.

Spencer also teased that Microsoft is potentially interested in older franchises, including a reboot of Phantom Dust. "It's a discussion right now; there's nothing signed. But we're talking. It does seem like there's a lot of interest around that."

Gears of war just isn't doing it for me anymore. I know pretty much exactly what to expect from its campaigns. It either needs a big shake-up or they should just switch to a completely new IP. The only thing I like which isn't in other games is the reload mechanic; it would be nice to see that appear elsewhere if there's not some restriction on its usage.

I'm still interested in a next-gen Gears of War, but right now, I want to see some new IP.

Not sure what people are complaining about? I bought a 360 specifically for Gears Of War. That was the first true next gen game in my opinion. The trilogy was brilliant. Gears Judgment was a good attempt at trying something new, but now they no what not to do in a proper Gears game. I actually enjoyed the Judgment campaign, but the online went from bad to worse. We have to keep in mind that People Can Fly worked on Judgment, not Epic Games.

Of course I want to see what Gears would be like on the Xbox One! That's like me saying "Enough Uncharted, the trilogy was done". Of course people want to see what Uncharted is like on PS4. Just like Gears fans want to see what Gears will be like on Xbox One. Here's hoping they do it right.

People want a sequel to Judgement? From everything I have read it seems that game was more of a re-imagining of the franchise rather then a *NEW* gears. I also wouldn't be surprised if the rumors of Cliffy B leaving was because of the creative differences and that unnamed sequel being canceled before Judgement came to light.

It was done after the trilogy. Please stop. You are so money grubby that you ruin franchises. All my friends are hardcore gears fans and we didn't buy Judgement. There's a large group of people who after the trilogy just walked away from the franchise.

I enjoyed the trilogy but there was no need for more after that, and I never considered buying judgement. Judging by the sales of judgement in comparison to the other games I'm not the only one.

I disagree (and this is coming from a fan of the Gears trilogy)

The reason I got an Xbox 360 was Gears of war. I really loved he first three. But I must say, they really let me down with Judgement. It just didn't feel like gears anymore to me.

In other words, Epic wants to move on and do new stuff, but MS won't let them.

What X1 needs is Crackdown 3, another GoW, and a couple brand new AAA's from respected devs.

A next gen gears would be best if it was a story many years after the events of original trilogy. No more prequels!!! judgement was good, yet it couldn't match any of the 3 original games. I know locust died but there could be a possibility not all really died, may be the few alive could evolve as more intellingent beings that could talk and really think; they could develop a large underground city; some old rivalries could arise again against COG, I imagine an alliance between an evolved locust and humans against COG... anyway, a nee GOW would be awesome, yet I hope it won't be X1 exclusive

A next-gen Gear would be sweet!... Just want a bit of breathing room from Judgment first... I'd be happy to see a new game come 2015

I guess,do just mostly everything oposite to GOW Judgement.
Better storywriter,fresh characters,less DLC,more content at launch.
I found GoW 3 fantastic but when i heard from my friends details, who got it before me,i kept distance to Judgement.

Its a shame then that most X1 consoles were dead on arrival.

So what you're saying is if the game was totally different it would have been just as good. I think they should have kept the locust team and characters. The story should have been more than going from room to room being locked in with a set of challenges to make it slightly harder. The multilayer was just boring. Not enough levels. Thought I was glad to see blood drive come back.

This was a great franchise.... but I lost interest after Gears 2. How about a new franchise?

Judgement was an insult to the Gears of War series. People can fly did an awful job.

A lot of life left? For what else exactly? The 3rd game pretty much closed everything up. Gears Judgement was a long wanted but failed prequel to the series. What else can you do without a retcon at this point?

Look kids Microsoft and Sony are not in it for the love of games (maybe Nintendo a little bit), they are in it for the money, this is a business. So there's no way Microsoft would drop such a lucrative franchise as Gears of War and Halo, the same with Sony and God of War and Uncharted. If the devolopers wants to move on they can do so but the intellectual property remains with the exclusivity owner. This doesn't mean Sony and MS will not be making new original games at all ! And the day those franchises will stop making money they will be dropped just like the movie business will make a sequel only if its predecessor has made money. It's just business. I look forward to Quantum Break and Watch Dogs just like the next Gears of War and Uncharted, for different reasons. Fan boys might be upset to hear that maybe on some level those two companies are actually cooperating a little bit, would that be so surprising ?

M$ better hope they can make a deal to keep GoW Xbox exclusive. GoW is the reason I bought a 360.

I agree, Gears of War's fantastic and has a lot of stories to tell. All it'd need is some additions to the series (obviously). One simple thing that I would love to see, is them implement the mechanic to switch over the shoulder at will. It's small, but I'd like that. They should do a game where it has flashbacks to a time when there was no war, before the pendulum wars. I want to see the beauty of Jacinto. Furthermore, depending on how it's done, I don't believe some franchises are being 'milked'. Just because it's not new, and games in the series keeps coming out, doesn't mean it's being milked. If there's stories to tell in the game universe I loved to explore, then I'm all for it.

@force_user1975 People can fly only did Campaign mate it was Epic who did the MP side of things. They proper ruined it and GOWJ panned. Only sold over 1 mil copies whereas Gears 3 had 1 mil pre orders and sold over 3 mil copies. Epic really need to not mess with MP again if they want to do well with a next gen Gears of war.

@PSYCHOV3N0M I enjoyed the trilogy. But was pretty satisfied by the end of it.

They would need to change things up for me to get on board again.

@Kr3isen LOL - You must be in marketing somewhere to boldly state that with no citations of facts to back it up.

@StevenMckinnis I think Judgement was fun, the problems were that the story wasn't very interesting (characters were alright in my opinion), and from what I hear, there wasn't much to the multiplayer. If it had a better story and more to the MP, I bet it would have been just as good as the previous titles.

@Japanese_Jade When there's money involved anything can happen :P.

Personally I'd like them to port Gears 2 and 3 to PC. The first PC Gears of War got great reviews.

@Hurvl@Japanese_Jade Well said man, gears PC was the best and still is because of keyboard and mouse support, not to mention the 60fps, so being able to wall bounce properly and snipe without a controller made it for me. I still play gears PC to this day. Just a tragedy when they didn't release any of the others of the franchise on GFWL. Lets hope to GOD they release a new gears on (PC) as well as Xbox one..

@Riddick123 @Creed02 @dribblesbarbax Thanks Mr. Van diesel. Yeah I agree with you and guess what i am gonna buy next ac as well as prev. titles. but please just keep on track, we are talking about GOW,

@Creed02 @dribblesbarbax It's a Futurama character Mr Creed.  Ubisoft is milking AC as well, hence the irony.  They will as long as we buy the franchise game.
