The What If Machine - Crysis Nanosuit

This week Cam delves into the world of nanotechnology and investigates the sharpest suit in all of video games!

Join the conversation on Twitter at #whatifmachine.

The Crysis Nanosuit transforms its wearer into the ultimate weapon. It's at the centre of one my favourite first person shooter series, and aside from being a great gameplay mechanic, it's also a fascinating piece of science fiction. With the suit set to return early next year in Crysis 3, now seems a good a time as any to investigate whether science could actually build a tank-in-a-tux garment for the soldiers of today.

As ever I'd love to hear your feedback on the show. Also, if you have a topic to suggest for future episodes then drop it in the comments or prod me directly via Twitter @camfrazrob.

If you enjoy the show, then don't forget to visit the YouTube show page and subscribe! You need never miss your weekly dose of science-meets-video-games goodness.

Next week is the last show in the current series so make sure you check it out on Monday, it's going to be a wipeout!

Cameron, could you tell me why is it so familiar the music beginning from 1:50? What is the name of the song?

There was some really cool chemistry in this episode.

I'd love to see anti-gravity being discussed in an episode.

I'll say anywhere from 30 to 50 years to develop a nano suit similar to the one in Crysis.

Everything, so I think maybe it is.

My biggest concern is..well...what if you fart inside the suit...no nano-stuff will save you than! :O

Funny, except for that last one I read about all these things on the BBC tech news page over the last few months. Can't wait to see what is coming next.

That could happen within the next 20 years.

A Nano-suit would be a dream, but what about combining the new with the old, such as the Augmentation Nano- Tech used in DEUS EX. ? After all, if captured, the nano-suit could be removed, But the ex-tech could go undetected .

In either case, The Military  of the world will have had the tech, long before we citizens will ever hear of it.

Love these shows, even though we'll probably never see any of this stuff in our lifetimes. Even if I didn't care for the show, I'd watch just to hear "Way Up High" at the end. On a separate note, I was thinking "all this show is missing is hot chicks", and ofcourse Cam has come through for us once again.

Once the use of nano materials reaches a certain point it will be everywhere in the environment and no one knows how that will affect our health.

Current ballistic body armour doest stop from being stabbed as they are different kinds of force. Also the blade or the point tends to slip through the kevlar. There are some cool you tube videos of a liquid that becomes a solid being placed between kevlar layers that adds that protection.

What about the crazy speed boost?

Wow this show reminded me of my A-level chemistry days. Really entertaining series, too bad the first series is coming to an end.

nano's will one day cure all Diseases think about it, billions of nano's programmed to target the cells that cause cancer and other diseases, the future sounds good. and i would love to get my hands on one of them suits from crysis would be funny to watch bullets bounce of u or  to go invisible to hide from your misses when u steal her last piece of cake.

Kills me that the front page link takes you to the Xbox page. I miss when Crysis was PC exclusive. Nothing was dumbed down :(

So basically what you are saying is that even with all that cool tech I still won't be able to see through her top? Dang

I think it'll take another 5 to 10 years before there's things like Nano suits used by military and that'll probably be only for spec ops or commando types in my opinion.

I love the Nano suit though, I got so excited when I saw the title to this video, so cool and I'd love to have one.

About the cloak thing, there's so many rumours and even videos on YouTube about the US military using these since the late days of the Iraqi conflict. I think the power source would be the biggest challenge to get passed.

Could have shown more of the original Crysis though.

@Cameron Robinson I think racing technology would be a cool topic to make your next vid about, like how racing technology has changed and where it's going, like hover technology. I think it'll be like i, robot / wipeout in a good couple of years, I'd love that even though I like cars the way they are now.

@xefaros nano-materials don't have to be nano-sized in all 3 dimensions. a material 4 meters long, 5 meters wide and only an atom thick is still a nano-material, even though it is nano-sized in only one dimension.

@demonlova I think that would fall under strength, I mean if you can jump twenty feet it would make sense if you could sprint extremely fast also.

Spartan_418

@billlabowski "Oh no, another demographic of people are able to play a game that I like, what a travesty".

In many ways Crysis 2 was an improvement over 1.

shantd
shantd

@jetaj1  @demonlova hmmm....I don't know about that. Boosting strength is only a matter of adding leverage. That wouldn't be enough to get a 300lb man in a suit to jump 20 feet or run super fast. The latter would be particularly tough, given the coordination involved in running. Look at the mechanical suit in the video. It enabled the guy to lift a bunch of weight, but I guarantee you he can't run fast or jump high in that thing.

billlabowski
billlabowski

@Spartan_418 No it wasn't. It was a failure. Wait, I'll name one. HDR lighting was better...that's it :)

@delta-59lol, good observation. The idea to simply dump nano-bots into the bloodstream and allow them to make a super hero out of you certainly seems compelling. It's also never gonna see the light of day in our lifetimes. Not a chance in hell. Now your latter suggestion, nanobots that induce a cardiac event is utterly BRILLIANT! Laying siege to one's heart...literally!

delta-59
delta-59

@shantd If you watch the crysis 1 opening. For strength and speed the suit dumps little nano machines into the wears blood and accelerates the circulation. Whether that would make you run faster or just give you a heart attack im not sure...

@1wikkid1 If by "consolization" you mean the developers have sold out then I agree.

WillyChong
WillyChong

@1wikkid1 The only reason I love the original Crysis is that you can do whenever the hell you want, you can sneak past the entire squad of KPA without the need of using cloak mode, wider places with lots of alternatives to move around, sneak up and kill goons like Predator except for the very last chapter, in Crysis 2, your cloak mode is sort of useless cause you always ended up in a gun fight, every damn time, cause those shit aliens can see right through you, and I swear that they remove the actual visual cue ai cause the enemies now know where the hell you are, even if you hiding inside a bush, which the last Crysis game, hiding and sneak between bush works as good as cloak mode...... kinda sad they remove the damn mechanic, now everyone can see right through you......

1wikkid1
1wikkid1

@Spartan_418 this "actual level design" you speak of is the thing that killed crysis.  the original games appeal was the fact that the levels are open, you are left to approach from just about any angle, a lot of the time confrontation could be avoided altogether, which is important to those of us who prefer a more sniper-like game play as opposed to the run-n-gun that crysis 2 forced upon us.  so while yes, the environments are impressive, the actual level design is exactly whats wrong with crysis2, and i really hope that crysis3 doesnt follow the same path, otherwise itll be another game that consolization destroyed.  and yes, consolization is entirely at fault here.  consoles simply arent powerful enough to be able to render that quality open environment, its MUCH easier to create a tunnel that the player is forced through instead of creating an actual zone that is open to be traveled at will.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@billlabowski I can list several ways in which Crysis 2 was better:

-actual level design

-more fluid way of switching armor modes

-way more environmental variety

-soundtrack

-multiplayer

Sure, there were a few ways in which 1 was better, but my I'm able to see shades of grey rather than my opinions always being absolutes. Not that I expect you to understand that, PC elitist :)

I had a ton of fun with Crysis 2, it wasn't a "failure", not by a long shot.
