The Walking Dead dev creating Borderlands adventure game

Telltale Games reveals "Tales from the Borderlands," a new project in collaboration with Gearbox Software.

by

Tonight at the 2013 VGX awards, Telltale Games announced "Tales from the Borderlands," an all-new series from the studio that created the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead point-and-click adventure series.

The game will launch in 2014 as a series, though platforms were not specified. Previous episodic games from Telltale released first on PC before coming to consoles later.

According to Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford, Gearbox has provided the "keys to the kingdom" to Telltale to create the game. Telltale is the principal developer, while Gearbox will serve as a collaborator only.

Tales from the Borderlands will feature new characters, not the vault hunters players have come to know from the stylized shooter series. However, players will encounter familiar characters throughout the series.

The 2013 VGX awards are currently ongoing. Keep checking back for more news and video from the show.

Not sure how this will work, but hell, Telltale hasn't disappointed me with The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, so I'm onboard.

It would be interesting if someone made a game similar to borderlands, in a Diablo like playstyle... i would buy it. Although the loot system would need to be akin to Diablos. But in a borderlands setting. It would be interesting.

The wolf among us walking dead season 2 yeah I get game of thrones and this ? Telltale you put your finger in too many pies I think , time will tell but shouldn't you finish the work you started already on the first two projects I mentioned before starting more projects ?

even if it was a small part of the game, I really enjoyed the story parts of borderlands 2.

Guys, ill be honest here, im a massive Borderlands fan and absoloutely battered 1 & 2 including all Addons etc, but as much as I'd love a next gen Borderlands, I cant but help feel this is simply an entrée or sweetener if you will to keep the appetite at bay before the next 'Real' Borderlands instalment.

how is this going to work. a first person shooter based around the idea of a millions of guns is going to be a point and click game? don't get me wrong the story will be probably great as in the second game, but what is the game play going to be? i am kinda confused on this one.

I will skip this one from Telltale, other games are based on books, comics or TV shows this one is based on another game.

Telltale has a lot on their plate, here's to hoping they don't crack under the pressure and release half finished games.

i wish they would focus a lil more on the wolf among us right now...

They better not mess this up, I love Borderlands too much to see it tarnished by this.

I still have to go trough Borderlands 2 though.

This seems like a weird combination. There are quite a few other options that would seem to fit better, but you know it will be quite funny. Oh, and what about the mute protagonist? Nobody has ever heard the voice of him/her.

wait a minute, walking dead season 2, fables, games of thrones game and now this, how many people does telltale have.

This will either be crap or something totally awesome. Add a strong story to Borderlands and...it could be magnificent.

Gearbox should just re-brand themselves Borderlands Inc they are a one trick pony

Eh, can't say what I think about this. What made the Walking Dead good was the source material. Not sure Borderlands has the same potential for a strong story. I just can't see this working.

Sweet! The world of Pandora is pretty decent, the lore and all that. It's just that Gearbox suck at making tolerable gameplay, hopefully Telltale can show them how it's done

Two of my favorite games. As long as they have Scooter, I'm in.

Catch a Ride.

I'm okay with this.

Thank goodness it's not another "shoot, shoot, shoot, reload, die to lag" game.

This is a really odd collab. Why would a game developer who focuses on story driven content collab with a developer who focuses on action gameplay, and really can't create a good story to save their lives?

While I think its kind of stupid to have a game that's main attraction is the story take place in a universe so terrible at storytelling (even if you like the games there's no denying Borderlands has some horrendous writers), but its Telltale so I'll keep an open mind.

To everyone who is trying to say Telltale is taking on to many projects at once, sit back for a second and think about something. What is at the core of all of Telltale's games? The writing. That mean's that the writing is something that the entire game is built around, it is the entire foundation, and more than anything it is what decides if the game is good or bad more than anything else. And writing is also the shortest process in a game like this. I'm not trying to undermine what the writers do, they are amazing at their jobs and I respect the shit out of them but when it comes down to it the writing stage takes a Hell of a lot less time than any other stage. Writing has no coding, no art design, no bugs to kink out (although Telltale doesn't seem to kink out their bugs anyways HARHARHAR!), no beta testing, etc. so a writing team can take a few weeks to write a story and hand it over to a team of developers to make the game out of it and by the time they are done making the game the writing team will have 3 more stories finished by that point.

Long story short, this isn't going to distract from The Walking Dead, don't worry.

I was expecting a Borderlands 3 announcement until I saw "Telltale Games". Massively disappointed.

This news won't please Borderlands fans, and it won't please Telltale fans either because they want to see more of The Walking Dead.

@TheExxorcist WHy would anyone bother with that ? They are same yet 1 FPS 1 SkyView , so nope. Noone will bother.

@masterwsgamer Borderlands is more than just an fps with gun drops, it had a setting. But it could do with a better telling of its story.

At least if one of the seasons is okay or not as great as it can be & they feel like they can't continue the story in any meaningful way they an just finish there in the current season. The Walking Dead Season 1 could have just been a one off story & that could have been fine. So at least the Season thing makes it that they can make self-contained stories & finish them if there's nothing left to really say story side of things.

Skrillbak
Skrillbak

My hope is that they have the story complete for the current seasons. Hopefully it's that or it's going to be this big mess of stories left incomplete & make no sense but I have faith they have a plan for this and can make it all happen.

Game Of Thrones? When is this coming out?

@Deadlysyns87 No, they have other smash hits like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever!

The Borderlands series features some hilarious writing. Compelling story arc? Not so much.

The point: Don't insult the writers just because their sense of humor isn't your thing. Personally, I love laughing my way through Borderlands 2 and don't need a muddled plot thrown in my face. Frankly, I'm not even sure they can tap some hidden potential for a serious story in Borderlands, but we'll have to wait and see.

@Tiwill44Borderlands 3 will happen eventually, but not yet. They still have a whole second season of DLC to release.

vault-boy
vault-boy

@Tiwill44 Considering they probably have totally different teams working on these games TWD will probably be almost completely ineffected by this game, but I still don't see why you would ever try to make a game with a narrative focus in the Borderlands universe...

sensesfail99
sensesfail99

i know right?! ive been dying for episode 2! I dont really care about Borderlands, i mean yeah it was fun, but if telltale is going to make it like TWD and TWAU then its totally lost what makes Borderlands, Borderlands....LOOT, GUNS, and MAYHEM.

Kevin75
Kevin75

@Jah_Glow While it wasn't a elaborate the game did have a decent plot that was more than just an excuse to move from area to next kill everything you see area.

hinzkunz
hinzkunz

I don't think that will happen. In one interview Randy said something along the lines that most of the staff has already moved on to development on some yet unnamed next-gen titles and only a small crew remains for future DLC and these therefore will be along the lines of the Headhunt DLCs, new character skins and the like.

Maverick6585
Maverick6585

@vault-boy  Because badasses, that's why.
I'm sure it's not going to be serious like TWD. It'll be like playing a comedy. Like an entire game like the "A Meat Bicycle Built for Two" trailer.

Kevin75
Kevin75

@Deadlysyns87 @vault-boy Technically Gearbox didn't develop ether of those titles, they just got them working and Duke Nukem wasn't as bad as people like to make it out to be. Still Gearbox had no excuse farming Aliens to that hack of a company.

Deadlysyns87
Deadlysyns87

@Jah_Glow That being said its still funny but in the kind of way you should feel ashamed of afterwards

Jah_Glow

Seriously dude, stop insulting the sense of humor just because it isn't your thing. I find Borderlands 2 a rather hilarious game, you don't.

vault-boy

@Maverick6585 Still it seems off to me. I mean Borderlands never had good writing at all, be it dramatic, comedic or otherwise, so making a game that exists to deliver some good ol' fashioned writing for a series that exists only to deliver shooting seems like a bad match. Still, Telltale is the shit so I'll wait and see.
