The Walking Dead creator talks video game and TV show crossover

"That door is always open for us," says The Walking Dead creator.

After the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead aired in the US last night, creator Robert Kirkman has spoke about the possibility of a TV series and video game crossover.

"That door is always open for us, though whether or not we step through it remains a big question," said Kirkman in an interview with Wired.

So, will we ever see anything like Rick Grimes talking to Clementine? "I certainly wouldn’t want to spoil anything cool like that if we had it coming up," said Kirkman. "Scott Gimple, our showrunner, is certainly a huge fan of that game series as well and very familiar with it."

The Walking Dead game adaptation is being developed by Telltale Games, and is currently in its second season.

Earlier in the current season of The Walking Dead, one of the lead characters planned a trip to Macon, the hometown of protagonist Lee in season one of the game adaptation.

"That was a little nod to those fans, to let them know that we’re aware of the greater Walking Dead universe," said Kirkman. "It’s always fun to come up with those little things."

I would LOVE to see Carly, Lee and Clementine from Season 1 The Walking Dead but how are you going to get  Melissa Hutchinson's voice adorable into such a cute little girl (unless you can find a little girl who looks like Clementine and sounds like Melissa Hutchinson or Do a Darth Vader)

Seems like Rick Grimes is a bit on the fence about a crossover.

A crossover would be pretty cool, but i'd prefer it if it were the whole of Lee's group rather than just Clem having a meet and greet. Its a chance to flesh out the characters loved in the game and give those who never played it an interest in those characters. For those who like both, its a total moment of awesome.

Honestly I don't doubt it... At this point Kirkman is willing to pimp out TWD to anyone.

wtf are you guys talking about the acting is just fine for the tv show lol

I read the comic books and watch the show.

I like how the show differentiates from the comic book. It keeps it fresh!

I have never played the game though but I will soon!!

it will turn out like garbage, the last time someone made a awesome game out of a Movie/TV show was GoldenEye 64. and that was 16 years ago.

If you are referencing the Telltale game, then, yes, it takes place in the same universe as the show.  Glenn makes an appearance in season 1 of the game.

It wouldn't be a true "crossover" surely. As the game takes place in the comics' continuity, not the TV show's. It is an explicitly separate universe. The most anyone can hope for is Easter Eggs. I assume that is what he is talking about.

Just don't ever cross over with Walking Dead Survival Instinct's magical zombies that spawn right behind you when you turn your back.

If they do start making these "crossovers", I really hope they don't affect the video-game at all. As long as the awful writing of the show sticks to just making the show awful, it can make as many crossovers as it wants.

Wow, since when does a passing remark constitute a 'talk'? So basically, it's a possibility, but they have absolutely no intentions to do it, or have any idea of how to implement it. 'News' must really be slow at the moment.

Other than the fantastic acting the show is piss poor compared to the Telltale games. Stay the fuck away.

Why mess with a good thing? Easter eggs and that's it.

You already have a cross-over. Telltale is taking very good care of that one. Keep it that way. No need for anything.

Man, make a better game where you can play as Rick, that's all I want. Then if you could play as Michonne and Daryl too that would be the tits

LOL No one ever mention of the game called "Survival Instinct" as if it never existed. Can't blame em. ;)

This idea might be extremely hard due to the fact that since the game is interactive, Clementine could have an entirely different personality between your game and the one in the show.

@IrrelevantGamer  It's the walking dead universe, but the game and show are not canon with one another. The game and comics are though.

@kingoffps maybe clementine's hat or radio can make an appearance, but no more.

@Alexk91  Nah, seriously doubt it would. Anything happening in the show as far as a crossover would only be referencing material from the games I'd imagine

@Vozlov  Whoever said it had to be a LONG, in-depth interview? He talked about it. Relax, geez.

@HesamB  The ending of the first season was so ridiculous and silly.  I thought it was pretty obvious that they weren't sure if the series would continue.  A nuclear device at the CDC GTFO.

@HesamB  i cried after first episode.... then i stopped watching it and i was happy cause i avoided 1 bad tv-show ^^

@Vidpci  The latter might be a little tougher than the former. I don't watch the show but the idea intrigues me.

@feared4power @wgerardi  Well, I mainly meant Andrew Lincoln. Other than the children there really aren't any bad actors in the show- unless I'm forgetting someone. The show is completely ridiculous and silly and the reason I think most people don't realize this is because the acting is so strong.

The acting to me is like, confusingly good with the show being as poor as it is.

@gatsbythepig @HesamB nuclear? lol where did you get that from? And yes all facilities that carry highly dangerous infectious agents have a fail safe to destroy all samples in case of an emergency. you know, so you dont get ebola popping up in random places.

@sirpsychosexy91 @wgerardi  I personally enjoy the acting and show overall, though I agree on the poor writing. Hopefully they'll fix that. The only weak actor on the show is probably Chandler Riggs or whatever. Carl's actor

@wgerardi @sirpsychosexy91  i normally don't watch tv much either, but i had heard such good things about The Wire and Sopranos being two of the best tv shows of all time (and i knew about Breaking Bad already) so last year i binge watched all 3. They really are pretty memorable, especially The Wire with how realistically it portrayed a city and how everything interconnects from the views of the cops, the politicians, and the street gangs.

wgerardi

@sirpsychosexy91 @wgerardi  lol I don't think you are being condescending enough. You're right though, I don't watch TV shows, maybe that's why I was impressed with TWD's acting. And to be honest I don't really expect good acting from TV shows, especially when compared to acting in independent feature films.

gatsbythepig
gatsbythepig

@wgerardi  Andrew Lincoln is a very good actor.  The actors portraying Andrea and the Gov. are awful.  The Gov. is has a totally flat affect and sounds Irish, not southern.  Andrea just sucked, but maybe that was her character on the show.  Andrea was awesome in the comic though.

sirpsychosexy91
sirpsychosexy91

@wgerardi  I thought the acting was pretty poor except for MAYBE the first season, but I have watched higher quality shows from beginning to end such as Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and The Wire so it could be that I have higher standards.

@EcksTheory Are you kidding me?  My dad works at the NIH and a friend works at the CDC.  She specializes in infectious diseases.  Did you see that explosion?  Ridiculous.
