The Order: 1886 Dev Says PS4 the Only Console That Could Handle Its Graphical Fidelity

The developers behind the PS4-exclusive shooter talk about their upcoming game and why it needed to be on Sony's hardware.

Ready at Dawn, the studio behind the upcoming third-person shooter, The Order: 1886, has revealed the game's visual quality could have only been achieved on the PlayStation 4.

Speaking at a recent Sony event in New York, J Goldberg, community manager at Ready at Dawn, said the studio came up with the idea for The Order: 1886 while still making games for the PSP. However, the game's main conceit--an experience that feels like a movie but plays like a game--required a console with the right technical specifications. "We couldn’t have achieved this graphical fidelity with any other console," Goldberg said.

The studio used full performance capture for all characters in the game, as well as the same character model for gameplay sequences and cutscenes, making the transition from one to the other almost seamless. "We're moving the camera in space, we're not loading in a video."

"We're moving the camera in space, we're not loading in a video." -- Goldberg

First announced at E3 2013, The Order: 1886 takes place in Victorian London, where a faster, stronger Industrial Revolution has created new technologies and gadgetry. But some Dickensian misery remains--the lower classes, unsatisfied with their lot in life, threaten the social order. Keeping order is a group of knights descended from King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, a group of morally just peacekeepers who protect the upper classes. Adding to the threat are packs of half-breed monsters--part-human, part-animal--who've been at war with the human race since the seventh century.

The Knights have an advantage--a supernatural element called Black Water, which allows them to move faster and heal more quickly, as well as a diverse range of sophisticated steampunk weapons. A few examples include a thermite rifle that shoots clouds of aluminium oxide pellets and an Arc Gun, which fires bolts of lightning.

"There hasn't really been a game set in this period," Goldberg said. "There were a lot of incredibly cool things that happened, with the government, with inventions, and so on--folks love that stuff. We knew we could have a lot of fun with it if we took that rich history and put our own spin on it."

The Order: 1886 launches exclusively on PS4 on February 20, 2015, and you can read more about our hands-on experience with the game at E3 right here.

Bunch of horseshit, they could have easily made it on the xbox one lol.. Xbox one might be weaker but that is no reason why they didn't make it for the xbox one.

PS4 is more powerful than X bone. Sorry X bots but that is a fact. If anything people should be mad at Microsoft for the WEAK hardware they put in their system.

you guys in the comments need to grow up to be honest. they most likely are not wrong. its a fact that sony have some of the best developers in the world and if you deny that then i guess you just dont know lol. now, these best developers in the world can do things that microsoft studio's can only dream of, again, deny that then i guess you just dont know. so as the ps4 is in fact the best console on the market in terms of power, imagine what the best developers in the world could do on a console like that. basically, i think they are not lying, i mean maybe if this game was dumbed down and they released it on xbox then sure, but they work for sony so the fact is......only possible on ps4 xD

Wow the bull that comes out of these developers mouth to try and sell a system.plus the game is probably trash with next gen graphics

I know this is a marketing ploy but it just gets a bit annoying that MS and Sony are touting their consoles as cutting edge "next generation" tech when actually the tech they're running on is already a couple years old and not the most powerful at that.  That being said, I still love my consoles.

If graphical fidelity is the basis for putting your game on a particular platform you don't go to console. I understand that this was at a Sony convention, and this is the type of stuff you say to win over people who choose one platform over the other, or the people who are paying you. It just falls on def ears when I read this on a site that is suppose to cater to all game platforms.

Have fun never having Microsoft work with ya on any future IPs, pal.

THIS, is exactly why The Order is one of my most anticipated games.

they could have achieved far more if they ever go for PC... but nice try with consoles freaks.

Yeah, coming from the guys who made pathetic excuses to compromise the framerate and resolution for the game. Sony is losing credibility bit by bit this generation.

it's the only console willing to pay them enough! naughty dog said the same thing about one of their games on the PS3 too. And we all know the PS3 was an inferior machine. (as i have both I can say that)

A Sony paid studio praising a Sony console at a Sony paid event.

Shocking! Call gamespot - we have a story!!!

Too bad there's no online.

Funny how these devs claim that the graphic fidelity couldn't be achieved on any other console when they have never developed a game on a microsoft console before. How are they going to jump to that conclusion when they don't touch the hardware?

noobocalypse
noobocalypse

The path that the developers are going, I'm pretty sure the xbox one could handle this game considering the resolution is at 1920x800 and the frame cap is 30. Makes me frustrated that they had the nerve to say "This game needed the theatrical type of feel"

eternal_napalm

This game sucks. No meatheads, no fart guns, a structured narrative, no energy drinks, no 5 variations of destroying three objectives, a coherent story and no TV show.

FailStation 4 strikes again.

A studio that hasn't touched the Xbox One, and is developing exclusively for Sony has no idea what the Xbox One can and cannot do.

These are the people who did us the massive favor of upping the frame rate to 30 when they say they wanted 24.  Don't believe a word they say.  They have no idea what they could do with the Xbox One dev kit and they damn well know it.

30fps and not rendering a fourth of the screen makes their claims laughable.

@Creed02 lol ur just another pc fanboy, and besides the dev for Ready At Dawn just stated that ONLY the ps4 can handle the graphical fidelity. If you think they could've achieved more on the the pc then why didnt they make it for the pc?

bobduncanator
bobduncanator

@Creed02 Well Ready At Dawn already said that only the ps4 could handle this game so..... your logic is invalid

@killmoore was it? I have both too, and it was indeed inferior a while back until developers figured out how to use the hardware effectively (PS3 RDR looked awful), latest titles looked pretty much identical on both platforms, not to mention exclusives - while there was impressive ones on both platforms (both tecnically and artistically), PS3's looked better.

I don't think that X1 couldn't run Order though, with a few tweaks here and there, maybe some filters disabled\optimized, it could've been pretty much the same on X1.

But that's not what bothers me, I don't really care about platform they chose, but the game itself looks... well, it looks good, sure, but judging from all I've seen it looks like Gears of War in a slightly different setting.

@Keivz_basic Correction...every COD game is hogwash and a waste of time. Then again, I hate all FPS games. How can you connect with a character you never see?

jellyman68

@markgulfcoast How do you know they haven't touched it? Because they've never released a game to the public on it?

classic_gaming

@noobocalypse hey man I know your not very informed and truly a squirrel in terms of the art of video settings but when you lower the framerate you see more detail and interactive features 24fps is what movies run on for that purpose but that would be unplayable with 800p. with 800p they could be more in sync when processing different polygons all at once in the form that they switch perspectives easier. but with already a movie like feel this game looks even better since they completely gotten rid of cutscene load time as in gme and cutscenes utilize the same part of the engine the only difference is that the camera changes. Thanks to the Ps4s hardware

@xXxIRyanxXx How do you know they haven't touched the Xbox One? Because they haven't released a game for it? Game developers are always testing things internally and the public never hear about it.

@pnova @Creed02 If you honestly think that a PS4 could look better than a PC...

Go back to pre-school.

Kuhlio13

@igorphoenix @killmoore Exactly, once developers learned how to use the hardware...some great looking games came out. Mostly from Naughty Dog of course. Not to mention Sony had the blu ray technology.

Given that it's a marketing comment and probably not even attempted to be ported to other systems (PC?) because of it's PS4 exclusivity, I'd call BS.
